Holder for horses' manes.

Be it known that I, Bernard C. McDonald, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Horses’ Manes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a device for holding the mane of a horse away from the collar and comprises a holder having a clamp at either end, and holders adapted to receive portions of the mane.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the location of my improvements in connection with the mane of a horse. Fig. 2 is a face representation of the holder. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation. My improved holder comprises the strap 1 to the ends of which are secured plates 2 and 3. The outer ends of these plates have upturned end plates 4 and 5 formed of separate pieces with their edges turned beneath the plates Fig. 6, and the rivets 6 and 7 connect these ends and the plate to the strap. Washers 8 and 9 are located beneath the inner ends of the plates, and rivets 10 and 11 connect these ends with the strap. The plate 2 is provided with a notch 12 in its edge near its inner end, and a slide 13 engaging the plate 2 is adapted to enter the notch. A coiled spring 14 has one end connected to the end 4 and its other end is connected to the slide 13. The plate 3 is provided with a notch 15 in its edge near its inner end, and a slide 16 engaging the plate 3 is adapted to enter the notch. A coiled spring 17 has one end connected to the end 5, and its other end is connected to the slide 16. When the slides. 13 and 16 are located in the notches 12 and 15, the coiled 45 springs 14 and 17 will be held extended as shown at Fig. 4, which will separate the coils of the springs.

The horse’s mane 18 near the collar 19 is placed in the coils of the spring 14 and the 50 slide 13 is then released from its engagement with the plate 2 which will permit the coils to close and clamp the hairs of the mane. The spring coil 17 then receives a portion of the mane near the head of the horse, and its 55 coils are closed thereby clamping the mane in connection therewith. As shown at Fig. 1, the mane just in front of the collar 19 is held away from the collar which is the object of my invention. 60
