Application filed May 4, 1911. Serial No. 924,943.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Alfred C. 0. Bock, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin Counting and Wrapping Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, ana exact description of the invention, 10 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this 16 specification.
The present invention has reference, generally v to improvements in coin - counting and vyrapping machines; and the invention relates, more particularly, to a simple, 20 cheap, accurate and efficient machine for counting out a required number of coins and delivering the same to paper cartons or rolls adapted to envelop the same, so as to provide a package or roll of a specific number 25 of coins.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide an accurate coin-counting and wrapping machine comprising a hopper and stacking mechanism, a counting mecha30 nism which counts the coins from the stack formed by said;stacking mechanism, and a wrapping device to which the coins are fed by said counting mechanism.
A further object of the present invention 35 is to provide a coin - counting mechanism which can be arranged to count a desired number of coins, and which is self-locking, when said desired number of coins have been counted, thereby rendering the machine 40 locked against operation until said self-locking mechanism has been released from its locking relation. '
A further object of the present invention is to provide a wrapping device which coop43 erates with the said self-locking counting mechanism, and which, after having received the counted coins, is automatically reset by the releasing operation of said selflocking mechanism, so that said wrapping 60 device is properly arranged and disposed to receive another lot of counted coins.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel mechanism for feeding the coins to be counted to said coin-counting 65 mechanism. I
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. eo
With the various objects of this invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel coin-counting and wrapping machine hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements 65 and combinations of the various mechanisms and their parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which Will be hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embed- 70 ied in the clauses of the claim which is appended to and which forms an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which75

frames 2, so as to register above said bottomplate 3, is a carrier-plate 4, and suitably arranged and supported across the top of said side-frames 2 is an inclined bed-plate 5 for 5 the supporting thereon of a hopper, as will presently more fully appear. Said sideframes 2 are provided with suitable hangers 6 in which is journaled a driving shaft 7, said shaft 7 being provided at one end with 10 a handle or crank-member 8 by means of which the said driving shaft is rotated. Secured to the oppose end of the said driving shaft 7, so as to be presented at the outside of the adjacent side-frame 2, is a pulley16 wheel 9, and suitably supported beneath the said bed-plate 5 is a counter-shaft 10, upon the outer end of which is mounted a pulleywheel 11 which is driven from said pulleywheel 9, by means of a belt-connection 12. 20 Rotatably supported upon the said bed-plate 5 is a revolving hopper 13, which is provided with a spindle 14 journaled in said bed-plate 5 and a bracket-member 15 secured to the underside of said bed-plate 5. The 25 said spindle 14 carries a bevel-gear 16 which meshes with a bevel-pinion :17i which is fastened upon the said counter-shaft 10, all for the purpose of revolving said hopper 13 upon said bed-plate 5, when said counter30 shaft 10 is rotated. The bottom of said hopper 13 is provided with a plurality of holes or openings 18 which are located adjacent to the side-walls of the hopper, and the bedplate 5 is provided with a suitably located 35 opening or hatch 19 registering in the path of the said holes or openings 18 of the hopper, as the hopper is being revolved. ;
Connected with the underside of said bed-plate 5, so as to register beneath said JO opening or hatch 19, is the funnel-portion 20 of a coin-stacking device, said stacking device comprising a tubular member 21 which is suitably connected with the lower end of said funnel-portion 20, and is pro45 vided at its lower end with a socketed portion 22 adapted to receive one end of a tube 23, made of glass or any other suitable transparent material. Connected with the lower end of said tube 23 is a socket-piece 60 24, the inner walls 25 of which incline downwardly and in an outward direction. Said socket-piece 24 is received in the receiving opening 26 of a guide-plate 27 which is suitably secured upon said carrier55 plate 4, said guide-plate 27 being also cutaway upon its under side so as to provide a coin-passage 28 having a properly curved guide-wall 29. Suitably secured, in the proper location, to · the under side of the 60 said carrier-plate 4 is a bearing-member 30 in which is journaled a vertically disposed spindle 31, which projects upwardly through said carrier-plate 4, and the upper end of which is formed with a squared or 65 similarly formed shank 32. Arranged upon said spindle 31, so as to be presented beneath said carrier plate 4, is a bevel-pinion 33 which is in mesh with and is driven by a bevel-gear 34 which is secured upon said driving shaft 7. Removably connected upon 70 the said shank 32 of the spindle 31 is a kicker-disk 35 which is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending kickerarms 36, said disk 35 being arranged so as to rotate in contact with the upper surface 75 of the said carrier-plate 4, and being maintained in such relation by means of a coiled spring 37 which encircles the said square shank 32, between said kicker-disk and a washer and screw 38 secured to the free end so of said square shank. The kicker-arms 36 of said kicker-disk 35 travel in said coinpassage 28 formed in said guide-plate 27 and tend to propel the coins, one at a time, as they are delivered into said coin-pas- 85 sage 28 from said coin-stacking device to their operative engagement with the coincounting mechanism. Said coin-counting mechanism comprises the following devices.
Rotatably mounted upon the said carrier- 90 plate 4, so as to rotate in contact with the upper surface of the latter, is a counterdisk 39, the periphery of which is cut out to provide a series or depressions 40? each depression corresponding with a portion of 95 the circumferential edge-portions of the coins to be counted. Pivotally mounted upon said carrier-plate 4 is a spring-actuated pawl or dog 41, the rounded ena 42 of which rides in engagement with said de- 100 pressions 40 formed in the periphery of said counter-disk 39. Connected with the shank 43 of said counter-disk 39 is a pinion 44 which meshes with a gear-wheel 45 mounted upon a square spindle 46, said 105 spindle extending downwardly through said carrier-plate 4 and being journaled in a bracket-member 48 which is secured to the under side of said carrier-plate 4. Connected with said square spindle 46, so as to 110 be located between the under side of said carrier-plate 4 and said bracket-member 47, is a lock-disk 48 which is provided with a bolt-receiving cut-out portion 49 which extends in an inward direction from the cir- 115 cumferential edge-portion of said disk. Arranged over said gear-wheel 45 and the greater portion of said counter-disk 39 is a casing 50, said casing being provided with an opening 51 through which projects a 120 portion of the periphery of said counter disk 39. Secured upon the upper surface of said casing 50, or to any other suitable part; is a bracket 52 upon which is supported a total-adder device 53, the pinion 54 126 of which meshes operatively with a drivingpinion 55 which is secured to the shank 43 of said counter-disk 39. Arranged upon the under side of said carrier-plate 4, in a convenient location, is a guide-block 56, in the 130
1,0*4,067 channel 57 of which is slidably arranged and supported a lock-bolt 58 adapted to be brought into locking engagement with the cut-out portion 49 of said lock disk 48. j One of the side-walls of said guide-block 56 is provided with an inclined portion 59 which, permits of a slight lateral movement or oscillation of said lock-bolt 58, when the same is withdrawn from its locked engage10 ment with said lock-disk 48, so that the free end of said lock-bolt 58 will engage a portion of the circumference or periphery of said lock-disk and thereby retain said lockbolt in its withdrawn position, (as indicated 15 by the dotted representation of said lockbolt shown in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings) until said lock-disk 48 has been caused to make a revolution. The means for producing this slight lateral movement 20 or oscillation of said lock-bolt 58 comprises the coiled spring 60, one end of which is connected with said lock-bolt and the other end being anchored at any convenient stationary point. Pivotally secured to the *5 under side of said carrier-plate 4 is a lever or arm 61, the handle-portion 62 of which projects beyond the forward edge of said carrier-plate. Said lever or arm 61 is connected with said lock-bolt 58 by means of a *0 connecting link 63, and when’ operated, is returned to its normal initial position by means of a coiled spring 64, the one end of which is connected with said lever, or arm, and the other end of which is anchored at 36 any convenient stationary point.
Journaled between the said bottom-plate 3 and the carrier-plate 4 is a vertical shaft 65, upon which are mounted a pair of frame-plates 66 which are adapted to sup40 port a plurality of tubular carton-holders 67, each holder being adapted to receive and retain therein, a carton or roll 68 of paper . or other suitable material into which the counted coins are to be fed. Each carton 46 or roll 68 is provided with a closed end or bottom-portion 69, but said cartons or rolls are open at. their upper ends. The tubular carton-holders 67 are adapted to be revolved by the rotation of the shaft 65, so 50 as to successively present the same, beneath and in registration with a coin-passage 70 formed by a coin-chute 701 in said carrierplate 4, the said coin-passage 70 being adapted to receive the coins as they pass 55 through and are counted by the coin-counting mechanism, and the coins are carried or propelled to said coin-passage 70 by the operation of the kicker-arms 36 of said kicker disk 35, herein - above mentioned. The means for operating the said tubular cartonholders 67, to present the same beneath said coin-passage 70, comprises a ratchet-wheel 71 which is secured upon said shaft 65, said ratchet-wheel being engaged by a spring65 actuated pawl 72 carried by the lever or artn 61, said pawl serving to propel the said tubular carton holders when said lever or arm is oscillated. Sectired upon the under side of said carrier-plate 4, in any convenient location, is a spring-actuating dog 73, 70 which engaging the teeth of the said ratchetwheel 71 thereby prevents any backward movement of the said carton holders, as will be clearly evident. Connected with the under side of said lever or arm 61 is a stop 75 or brake-projection 74 having a serrated edge 75 which, when said lever or arm is moved into its operated position, (as indicated by its dotted representation as shown in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings), go engages the teeth of the rhtchet-wheel 71 ahd thus prevents any rotation thereof and consequently also prevents any rotation or movement of the carton-holders while the coins are being fed into the said holders. 85 Connected with said bottom-plate 3, in a proper location, is a carton-receiver 76, which serves to catch the coin-filled cartons, as they drop from the carton-holders 67, when the same are carried into registration with said carton receiver 76.
As it is often desirable to rotate the hopper 13, without at the same time operating said coin-propelling and counting mechanism, the driving shaft 7 is mounted so as 95 to be capable of a slight longitudinal shift or sliding movement in its bearings, which shift or sliding movement is produced by pulling outwardly upon the handle or crank-member 8, so as to disconnect the 100 meshing relation of the bevel gear 34 with the bevel pinion 33, and thereby permitting the pulley-wheel 9 to be revolved without operating the kicker-disk 35. The coiled spring 77, arranged between said bevel gear 105 34 and the hanger 6, serves to return and maintain said shaft 7 in its normal position. By thus being enabled to operate said hopper 13, before operating said coin-propelling and counting mechanism, the stacking de- no vice may be filled with coins before beginning the counting and wrapping operations, thereby assuring a continuous and uninterrupted feeding of- the coins to said coincounting mechanism. It is also sometimes 115 desirable to operate the coin-counting and wrapping mechanism without revolving said hopper 13; and, to this end, said belt 12 is maintained in its driving condition by means of a belt-tightening device which can 120 be released from its tightening relation with said belt. The said releasable belttightening device comprises a supportingplate 78 which is provided with perforated ears or lugs 79 for slidably supporting a 125 plate 80 with relation thereto, and upon which is mounted an idler-roller 81 which is adapted to engage with the said belt 12. The plate 80, with its idler-roller 81,- is maintained in its operative relation to said 130
1,094,057 belt 12, against the compression of a releasing spring 82, by means of a nosing 83 which is engaged by catch-lug 84', which is carried by a pivotally paounted releasing 5 lever 85, and all of which will be clearly understood from an inspection, more particularly, of Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawing·
The novel construction of coin-counting 10 and wrapping machine, herein-above described in detail operates, in performing its functions, in the following manner:—The coins desired to be counted and wrapped are placed within the hopper 13 which is're15 volved. The coins fall into the holes or openings 18, lying flat therein and upon the surface of the bed-plate 5. The revolving hopper 13 slides the coins up toward the opening or hatch 19, through which they 20 fall into said stacking-device, the coins being stacked therein one upon another, with the bottom coin lying in the coin passage 28 of the guide-plate 27? and in the path of the kicker-arms 36 of said kicker-disk 35. The 25 inclined inner walls 25 of the socket-piece 24 of the stacking-device assures the falling or delivery of said coins flat upon the carrier-plate 4 and within the coin-passage 28 of the guide-plate 27, since an “up ended” 30 coin will right itself in the enlarged portion of the passage bounded by said inclined inner walls 25 of said socket-piecer As has been stated, the tube 23 of the said stackingdevice is transparent, so that the stack of 35 coins is easily visible, and hence it can be ascertained at a glance, if a proper supply of coins is being fed to the coin-counting mechanism. As above mentioned it is advisable to first fill the stacking device with 40 coins before beginning to count the same. Normally, the counting mechanism is locked against operation; and, to release the same from such condition, the lever or arm 61 is pulled outwardly. This operation performs 45 two functions:—first, it withdraws the lockbolt 58 from its locking engagement with the said lock-disk 48, so that the same may revolve, and, secondly, it operates through the spring-pawl 72, engaging said ratchet-wheel 50 71, to turn the said carton-holders 67 and register one of the same, with an empty carton or roll 68, beneath said coin passage 70 into which the coins are delivered as they are counted, so that the same are guided into 55 the carton or roll 68. The machine is now set to begin the counting operation, which is performed as follows:—The handle or crank 8 is operated to revolve said shaft 7, which through the connecting gearing drives the 60 kicker-disk 35, causing the arms 36 of said disk to kick out the bottom coin 86 of the stack of coins contained in said stackingdeyice and propelling the same through the coin-passage 28 and into engagement With 66 one of the depressions 40 of said counter disk 39. .In propelling the coin past said counter-disk 39, the latter is caused to make part of a revolution. When wrapping pennies, for example, it is desired to count the same in lots of fifty, and to deliver each lot 70 of fifty pennies into a carton or roll 68. To this end, the said counter-disk 39 is provided with ten depressions 40 in its periphery, and the pinion 44 connected with the spindle 43 of the counter-disk 39, is ar- 7g raided so as to form in cooperation with said gear-wheel 45, a five to one gearing, so that when said counter-disk 39 has made five complete revolutions, the gear-wheel 15 has made but one revolution. Therefore, when the coin passes into and out of contact with said depressions 40 of the counter-disk 39, it has caused the latter to make one tenth of its revolution; hence, the passage of fifty coins in and out of contact with said coun- gj ter-disk 39 causes the latter to revolve five times and the said gear-wheel 45 but once. The lock-disk 48 being arranged so that it is revolved through the operation of said gear-wheel 45 also makes one revolution, 90 when fifty coins have passed said counterdisk 39. A complete revolution of said lock-disk 48 carries around said cut-out portion 49 thereof, so that the same is brought opposite said lock-bolt 58, the end of which 95 has been riding upon the periphery of said lock-disk 48, thereby holding out said lever or arm 61; in its operated position against the pull 'of the spring 64, and causing the brake-portion 74 to be maintained in its 10C holding engagement with the ratchet-wheel 71, as above described; but, as said cut-out portion registers with the end of the lockbolt 58, the spring 64 pulls said lever or arm 61 back to its normal initial position, and 105 thereby thrusts the said lock-bolt 58 into the said cut-out portion 49 of the lock-disk 48, thus locking the same against any further movement, and consequently preventing the kicker-disk from propelling the fifty-first 110 coin past the said counter-disk 39, until the lever or arm 61 is again pulled out to release the said lock-bolt 58, and to set the next carton-holder 67 with, its empty carton or roll 68 ready to receive the next fifty coins. It 115 will therefore be clearly apparent, that it is impossible to operate the coin - counting mechanism to count either over or under the desired number of coins, since the kickerdisk will continue to force the coins past the 120 counter-disk until the lock-disk has made a complete revolution; but, when the lock-disk has made such revolution it is automatically locked, whereby a single coin over the exact count will jam against the said counter- 128 disk and will prevent the operation of said kicker-disk. The total-adder device 53 is so geared with the spindle of the counter-disk that it registers the passage of each coin as it operates the latter. It will also be appar- 133
1,084,0β7 (J ent; that the arrangement of devices just described also prevents the depositing of more than one lot of coins in a carton or roll 68, , since before the counting and delivery of the 5 coins can be resum^ the lever or arm 61 must be operated to shift said Carton-holders 67 so as to carry a fresh or empty carton or roll beneath the coin-passage 70 to which the kicker-disk propels the coins during the ιό counting operation. As the carton-holders 67 are revolved, during the course of the operation of the machine, the coin-filled carton or rolls 68 are thereby carried around, until the same register over the slide of the car15 ton-receiver 76, whereupon gravity acting upon the coin-filled cartons or rolls causes the same to drop out of the carton-holders 67 and into the said carton-receiver 76. Thereupon, the open ends of said coin-filled 20 cartons or rolls may be pinched or closed over and removed from the machine by the operator.
It will be clearly evident, that the counter-disk 39 can be made in different sizes to 25 match the different denominations of coins, so that the same can be interchanged. This is also true of the gearing and lock-disk, and also of the kicker-disk. The relation of the gearing of the counting mechanism can be 30 arranged so that the lock-disk will complete its revolution when any desired number of coins have passed or been counted, as for example, twenty or forty nickels, quarters or half-dollars, or fifty pennies or dimes; 35 and, in fact, any desirable combinations of the number of coins and their total value, per carton or roll, can be worked out and the machine arranged accordingly.
I am aware that some changes may be 40 made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the 45 foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the same. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as de50 scribed in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said devices and parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
