TIMOTHY RANDLETT, OF ENFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

MOP-HEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,237, dated November 15, 1853.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Timothy Randlett, of Shaker village, Enfield, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have 5 invented a new and Improved Mop-Head; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Fig10 .ure 1 being a side view of the mop-head; Fig. 2, an edge view thereof; Fig. 3, a section through the center; Figs. 4, and 6, views of parts detached, and Fig. 5, view in isometrical perspective of a part detached. 15 Like, letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A cross-head B, is secured by a socket a, upon the end of the mop handle A; and in the loxver edge and around the ends thereof 20 is formed a groove b, in xvhich fits a binder D, that terminates in a ring E, surrounding the handle. A narroxv ridge, or projection, d, is formed longitudinally upon one side of the socket a, between xvhich projects tion and the ring E, of the binder, is situated an annular tightener C, constructed as follows: It fits closely, but so as to move freely, on the handle A, or socket a, and is provided with a groove /, (Figs. 4, and 5) ³⁰ on its inside into which the projection /, slides, to allow it to be pushed down to the cross-head B, in order that the binder may be separated from the cross-head for inserting the cloth between them. The lower edge of the tightener is formed into a se- ₃₅ries of scallops, or curved steps, c, c, &amp;c., arranged in a spiral direction, as shoxvn in Fig. 1. By raising the tightener above the ridge /, and then turning it in the direction indicated by the arrow, the binder will be ₄₀gradually brought nearer the cross-head B, by the action of the said ridge against said tightener, (as shoxvn most distinctly in Fig. 6,) until a scallop is reached which will hold the cloth fast. When the cloth is to be 45 removed, the tightener is turned in the opposite direction till the groove is brought over the ridge /.
