Locking and opening device for extension-tables.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Henry M. Hanson,· bf Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Locking and Opening Devices for Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in 10 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements • in tables and more particularly to locking means for the members of ah extension 15 table,—the object of the invention being to provide simple devices whereby the two members of an extension table can be drawn closely together and locked and to so construct the devices that, when operated to 20 release the table members, they, will also cause the forcible separation of one member from the other, thus obviating the inconvenience heretofore encountered with the “sticking” of dowel pins projecting from 25 one fable member and entering sockets in the other. .

With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as herein30 after set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view· of a portion of a table top showing the application of my improvements with the two members of the table top locked 35 together, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the positions of the parts after the table top members have been unlocked and separated.

1, 2, represent the two members of the top 40 of an extension table, the member 1 being provided at its ends with dowel pins 3 to enter suitable sockets in the adjacent end of the member 2. .

A bracket 4 is secured to and depends 45 from the member 1 some distance removed from the inner end thereof and to this bracket, a lever 5 is pivotally attached and formed at its free end into a handle 6. Another bracket 7 is secured to. the member 1 5° of the table top at a point between the bracket 4 and the inner edge of said member 1, preferably a short distance from said inner edge. The keeper 11 above referred to is provided at its end op- 65 posite the lip 10 with a depending arm or member 14 to be engaged by the free end of the locking bar 8 as presently explained.

When the table members 1—2 are separated and the locking devices are in the 70 positions shewn in Fig. 2, the operation of the lever. 5 to the left will cause the lockingbar to move upwardly (by. reason of the slot 12 and pin 13) until its hook 9 shall aline with the lip 10 of the keeper and the 75 further movement, of said lever 5 in the same direction will cause the two table top members to be drawn together. The pivotal connection of the lever 5 with the bracket 4 and the pivotal connection of the bar 8 with the 80 lever 5 will now be in alinement as shown in Fig. 1 and the table top members will be securely locked together. Should it now be desired to unlock and separate the table top members 1—&, the operator will move the 85 free end of the lever 5 downwardly. During the first portion' of this movement ‘the bar 8 will be moved longitudinally so as to engage the depending member 14 on the table top member 2 and forcibly separate the ⁹⁰latter from the table top member 1. As the bar 8 continues to move forwardly by the depression of the lever 5, said bar 8 will be caused to move downwardly (by reason of the slot 12 and pin 13) and the hoop 9 of ⁸⁵said bar to move away from the lip 10 of the keeper and thus the two table top members will be unlocked and separated as shown in Fig. 2.
