Application filed February 1, 1909. Serial No. 475,403.
it naay concern: :
Be it-known that ly Joseph Baber, a- citizen of the United States, residing at Poplar ISluff, Missouri, -have invented a new and 5 Useful Escapement for Type-Writers and Becording-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to escapements for typewriting and other recording machines 10 .wherein a lateral step by step movement is imparted to the paper carriage during the operation of the machine.
In a companion application filed January 18, 1909, Serial No. 472,823,1 have described 15 the construction and operation of an improved escapement including the escapement shaft and wheel and adjustable pawls movable across the path of the escapement wheel and adjustable with respect to each 30 other- tq effect speed or regular escapement On their operation.
The. present invention relates to mechanism to be embodied in a machine in combination with the mechanism just referred to, 25 and includes an improved mechanism for controlling the operation of the escapement in its different adjustments, and an improved device for operating said controlling means.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the escapement embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the controlling shaft detached from the remaining, portion of the 86 .mechanism. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tension regulating device whereby the tension of the restoring spring is regulated. Figs. 4, 5 and .6, are sectional views of the controlling, shaft in different positions.
4Θ Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating the arrangements of one of the stop devices whereby movement of the rocker carrying the escapement pawls is limited.
The hanger or support 1 is constructed 45 substantially as described in my companion application, having bearings for an escapement shaft 2 to one end of which a pinion 3 is attached and arranged for engagement with the rack on the paper carriage in the 80 well understood manner. The opposite end of the shaft 3 supports a housing 4 and the escapement wheel 5, the latter being mounted loosely on the shaft and interlocked with the housing 4 against rotation in one direc65 tion. The lower portion of the hanger 1 carries a rocker 6,; to which is pivoted a pawl 7 actuated in one direction by spring 8 and whose movement in that direction is limited by an offset 9 on the rocker. A pawl 10 is also carried by the rocker 6, and 60 may be moved and locked at either side of the pawl 7 as required to adjust the two pawls for regular or speed escapement as desired and as fully described in my companion application above referred to. The 65 pawl 10 is pivotally supported and may be adjusted and held at either side of the pawl 7. A locking pin 10a is movably mounted in a hole in an arm on the rocker 6 and may be withdrawn so as to permit adjustment of 70 the pawl 105 from One position to another. The pin 10a extends against the side of the pawl 10 effectively to lock or hold said pawl in either adjustment, whether for speed or regular escapement. By oscillation of the 75 rocker 6 the pawls 7 and 10 are moved alternately into engagement with the wheel 5, thereby permitting the shaft 2 to rotate intermittently and the paper carriage controlled thereby to move laterally. Move- 80 ment of the rocker 6 in one direction is effected through the medium of well known connections leading to an arm 11 on the rocker, and movement in the opposite direction is effected by a spring 12, the latter 85 also serving to hold the rocker in its idle or rest position.'
A shaft 13 is supported in bearings on the hanger 1, and is provided near its lower· end with a plane surface 14. At the lower 90 end of the hanger 1 an abutment or stop pin 15 is carried and held against the shaft 13 by a spring 16. Said pin is in position to be engaged by a projection 17 on the rocker when the latter is oscillated by down- 95 ward movement of the arm 11, and thereby to stop further movement of the rocker. Above the rocker support a pin 18 is supported in a manner similar to the pin 15, and is arranged as a stop and abutment for 100 the rocker in its idle or rest position. Opposite the end of the pin 18 on the shaft 13 a plane surface 19 is formed at right angles to the plane surface 14, and' a plane surface 20 is formed on the shaft on the side oppo- 105 site from said surface 14. A thumb nut 21 on the upper end of the shaft 13 and above the machine, affords means for rotation of the shaft as required to adjust the escapement for regular or speed escapement. A no
1,005,784 pointer 22 attached to the shaft indicates in I which adjustment the escapement is located. !
Adjustment of the pawls 7 and 10 for regular ancl speed escapement is effected in 5 the same manner as described in my companion application above referred to. By turning the shaft 13 until the plane surface 19 is opposite the pin 18, the pawl 10 having been previously adjusted, speed escape10 ment will be effected. The spring 12 will draw the rocker 6 to hold the pawl 10 in engagement with the escapement wheel, and during the downward movement of the arm 11 said pawl 10 will move out of engage16 ment with the wheel, and put the pawl 7 in position to be engaged by the advancing tooth on the wheel. In the adjustment shown in the drawing, which is for regular escapement, the shaft 13 presents a round 20 surface to the pin 18 and holds the pawl 7 in engagement with the escapement wheel so that on downward movement of the arm 11 the pawl 7 is swung out of engagement with the escapement wheel and the pawl 10 25 prevents operation of the escapement until return movement takes place. Adjustment of the shaft 13 to present the plane surface 19 to the pin 18 also presents the round sur. face of the shaft to the pin 15, so that the 30 rocker 6 moves thereon the- same distance at each operation, whether adjusted for regular or speed escapement.
One end of the spring 12 is attached to the lower arm of the bell crank lever 23 35 pivoted to the under side of the hanger or support 1. A bell crank lever 24 is pivoted beside the lever 23 and has an arm 25 extending under the upper arm of said lever 23, and an extension 26 bearing against the 40 shaft 13. When the shaft 13 is adjusted to present a round surface to the pin 18, the extension 26 rests against the plane surface 20. When, however, the shaft 13 is turned to bring the plane surface 19 against 45 the pin 18, a round surface of the. shaft is presented against the extension 26 as will be obvious by reference to Fig. 4, thereby holding the tension of the spring 12 constant or unchanged so that the rocker 6 will 50 be under the same tension at all times, except when voluntarily changed. A screw 27 operates through the upper arm of the lever 23 and against the arm 25 of the lever 24, so that by operation of said screw the 55 two levers may be adjusted with respect to each other. By moving the lower arm of the lever 23 in one direction the spring 12 will be extended and its tension increased, and by moving it in the opposite direction 60 it will be relaxed. The screw’ 27 projects through a hole 28 in the upper portion of the hanger 1, affording means for regulating the tension of the spring 12 from the top of the machine.
I am aware that there may be. modifica tions and alterations in the construction and arrangement of the parts embodying this invention without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and T do not restrict myself to identical feature f construction or arrangement, but
