Extending mobile phone networks
Abstract
A method, system, and computer program product for bridging a mobile phone network to other phone networks are provided here. A telephone network consists of a number of individually addressable telephone lines connected to several telephones and a gateway, which in turn are connected to one or more mobile phones and potentially one or more ground lines. When the gateway receives an incoming call from one of the mobile phones or an outgoing call from one of these phones, the gateway will execute routing rules to determine how to route the call . The routing process can be based on various factors such as schedule, cost, and mobile phone receiving an incoming call. To help identify the mobile phone as the source of incoming calls, a distinctive ring can be selected. To illustrate the difference between the mobile phone network and the phone network, the gateway will translate signals between the two networks.

Extended mobile phone network
The present invention relates to mobile phone networks. The present invention particularly relates to methods, systems and computer program products for bridging mobile phone networks to other phone networks.
Mobile phones are becoming more common. Initially, size, cost, and geographic coverage limited the use of most mobile phones in commercial environments. Early mobile phones are often called "bricks" because they are bulky and difficult to use. Professionals and technicians with on-the-go responsibilities will be typical mobile phone users. In many environments, numeric and text pagers provide an economical and convenient alternative to many early mobile phones.
Today's mobile phones are exquisite enough to fit in the user's purse. They have the same purchase and monthly service fees as traditional phones, and can provide local, regional and national coverage. Usually, a single family will have multiple mobile phones. With the increasing popularity of mobile phones, some are beginning to realize that there may not be a need for another home or office phone. In the next five years, it is estimated that up to 30% of home ground lines will be cut off and users will only rely on mobile phone services.
As consumers begin to move from home or office ground lines to exclusive (primary) mobile applications, they may lose some convenience. For example, a mobile phone can only appear in one location at a time. In particular, users usually charge their mobile phones at night so that they can be used the next day. Therefore, when returning home in the evening, users generally do not or cannot carry their mobile phones for action. Of course, even when the user does choose to carry the mobile phone when awake, when the user moves to a room, the phone may be left unfavorably in another room, making it difficult for the mobile phone to ring. Find it. In the case of multiple users sharing a mobile phone, these difficulties will become more serious.
In addition to the aforementioned problems, other consumer satisfaction issues are also prone to appear, including the well-known health items related to mobile phone radiation. When the user is faced with extended exposure, this health item may be particularly significant. Naturally, the limited battery life used to talk about standby time also presents a battery problem for the ever-increasing mobile phone applications. In addition, the benefit of automated dialing for emergency 911 response is usually to connect to a ground line. On the other hand, eliminating the cost of land lines and the convenience of a single phone number would be an attractive goal.
In an effort to solve some of the shortcomings related to the increasing use of mobile phones, some people have proposed a mobile phone charger basically equipped with a phone socket. By attaching a cordless or other telephone to the socket in the charger, a traditional telephone can make and receive calls through the mobile phone. Although they may provide some benefits, these simple products lack many features that consumers will find useful. For example, consumers may wish to route incoming calls to specific phones in a home or office. This feature will be particularly valuable when multiple mobile phones are available.
Similarly, consumers may also wish to automatically route an outgoing call to multiple mobile phones, or to one of a mobile phone or a land line, depending on the context surrounding the outgoing call. By. For further convenience, consumers may wish to change the access method for incoming and outgoing call routing within one day. Supporting various phone types may help meet the needs of some commercial or relatively complex home installation tasks. In addition, basic charger products may not provide a rich set of call features available in most mobile networks. Because they are based at least in part on the simplicity of these products, they cannot provide information such as receiving configuration settings from a personal computer. Therefore, various methods, systems, and computer program products are needed for bridging the mobile phone network to other phone networks.
It should be understood that this summary is only to provide a brief overview of the present invention, and should not be construed as limiting the scope defined by the scope of the patent application. The scope of the present invention is a method, system and computer program product for bridging a mobile phone network to other phone networks. For example, a telephone network may include multiple individually addressable telephone lines connected to one or more telephones. These individually addressable telephone lines are connected to a gateway, which in turn is connected to one or more mobile phones. The gateway can also be connected to one or more ground lines.
When the gateway receives an incoming call from one of each mobile phone, the gateway will execute one or more routing rules to determine whether the incoming call should be connected via this one or more Address the telephone line. Once identified, the gateway will connect the incoming call to one or more individually addressable telephone lines, so that each phone connected to the individually addressable telephone lines can be dialed in from the mobile phone Used. To help identify the mobile phone as the source of incoming calls, a differential ringing option can be selected.
Similarly, when the gateway receives an outgoing call from a telephone connected to the gateway via one of the individually addressable telephone lines, the gateway executes one or more routing rules to Select the mobile phone or land line through which the outgoing call should be routed. Once a mobile phone or land line has been selected, the gateway will properly connect the outgoing call.
The routing operation may depend on various factors, such as time-of-day, cost, mobile phone receiving an incoming call, etc. The phone can be any one or a combination of analog phones, integrated services digital Internet phones, digital phones, Internet protocol phones, and so on. Due to the difference between the mobile phone network and the telephone network, the gateway will translate the signal between the two networks. This translation operation can generate appropriate ring voltage and dial tone, as well as features such as call waiting, message notification, caller ID, caller waiting ID, call forwarding, call forwarding, conference call, sending call, etc. This is in action The telephone network is available, but it is completely unavailable on the telephone network, or there is no way of interacting directly with the mobile telephone network on the telephone network.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention can be stated as described in the following description, and part of them are obvious from the description, or can be known by implementing the present invention. The features and advantages of the present invention can be realized and obtained by means of the devices and combinations specified in the scope of the patent application. These and other characteristics of the present invention can be fully understood from the following description and the scope of the patent application that follows, or can be learned by the implementation of the present invention as described later.
The scope of the present invention is a method, system and computer program product for bridging a mobile phone network to other phone networks. Specific embodiments of the present invention may include one or more special purpose and/or one or more general purpose computers containing various computer hardware, as described in further detail below.
Figure 1 illustrates an exemplary environment for implementing the present invention, in which the gateway 130 can operate as a bridge between the mobile network 12 and a telephone network, and multiple telephone lines 170 that can be individually addressed Connected to the phone 180. The mobile network 120 can be any type of mobile network, including, for example, a GSM network, a TDMA network, or a CDMA network. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is a digital mobile phone system widely used in Europe and other regions. GSM is the most commonly used of these three technologies and is a variation of TDMA. Each mobile channel can be divided into three time slots by TDMA or time-scheduled multiple proximity. CDMA or code multiple proximity uses a spread spectrum technology, and generally refers to various agreements. Both TDMA and CDMA are commonly found in the United States.
For the gateway 130, the connection to the mobile network 120 includes a connection to the mobile phone 140 via a routed connection 132, and a wireless connection from the mobile phone 140 to the mobile network 120. It should be noted that the mobile phone 140 is one of the mobile phones. That is, as used in this specification, the term "mobile phone" refers to a wireless phone that is directly connected to a third-party wireless service provider, as opposed to, for example, a wireless phone that is directly connected to a consumer base station. . Thus, "mobile phone" includes mobile phones, satellite phones, and so on.
The connection 132 between the mobile phone 140 and the gateway 130 may include a serial connection, a universal serial bus (USB) connection, a Bluetooth connection, an 802.11x connection, or some other types of connections, including other wired connections. And wireless connection. 802.11 is a family of specifications about wireless local area network (LAN) technology. In detail, 802.11 calibrates a wireless interface between a wireless client and a base station, or between two wireless clients. Similarly, Bluetooth defines a short-range wireless connection specification for mobile phones, computers, and personal digital assistants (PDAs). It is appropriate to point out that the term "connection" should be broadly interpreted as covering various links that can be used to transmit information.
That is, as mentioned above, the various types of telephones 180 are connected to the gateway 130 through individually addressable telephone lines 170. For example, a single-line analog POTS phone 180a is connected to the gateway 130 through a wired line 170a; a multi-line analog POTS phone 180b is connected to the gateway 130 through one or more wired lines 170b; a wireless POTS phone 180c is connected to the gateway 130 through a wireless line 170c It is connected to the gateway 130; a digital, 802.11 or other telephone 180d is connected to the gateway 130 through a line 170d; and the serial POTS telephone 180e is connected to the gateway 130 through a shared line 170e. Similar to connection, the term "line" should be broadly interpreted as covering all kinds of links that can be used to transmit data, whether wireless or wired. In some implementations, for example, some forms of frequency-based or time-based multiplexing can be used to multiplex a single line for multiple phones. It should be noted that even if there are three serial (that is, via daisy chain) telephones connected here, the line 170e does represent an individually addressable telephone line.
Figure 1 mostly shows POTS phones. POTS is an abbreviation for general old telephone service, and refers to the standard telephone service used by most households in the United States. POTS can be compared to high-speed digital communication lines, such as ISDN and FDDI, which can provide greater bandwidth and speed. Usually POTS and PSTN, or the public exchange telephone network, are used interactively.
Of course, the phone 180 can be any type of phone, including analog phones, digital phones, ISDN phones, wireless phones, Internet protocol phones, and session initiation protocol (SIP) phones. SIP phones can provide various services, such as instant messaging (IM), short messaging service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS), and so on.
The PSTN 110 is connected to the gateway 130 through dMark 112, and contains one or more ground lines (although many parts of the PSTN 110 can be digitized, traditionally, the family and a central or regional telephone station (CO The final link between) will be analogous). The personal computer 150 and other computers 160 are also connected to the gateway 130 via a line or connection 132, and can be used as a telephone and/or to configure the gateway 130.
To help understand the benefits of the gateway 130, now consider the following scenario. A family with a father, a mother and a child lives in a single house with standard POTS telephones in many rooms. Since each of them has their own mobile phone, they decided to cancel their POTS phone service. Before canceling their POTS phone service, when the family member arrives home, they will place the mobile phone in the charger to prepare the phone for the next day. This is inconvenient because other people will call their mobile phones instead of their home phones. Since their mobile phone is in the charger, they find that they will miss the call because the charger is often located in another room away from at least part of each family member. However, if the phone is carried on the body, each family member sometimes forgets to put the phone in the charger and cannot have enough power the next day.
Installing the gateway 130 can solve many of the problems encountered by the family without restarting the POTS line (however, it should be pointed out that in some embodiments of the present invention, one or more POTS lines can be used for the gateway). Once inserted in the splitter of the dMark 112 of the family, the family can be separated from the PSTN 110, and the gateway can be individually addressed to various telephone lines (170a-170e). (In addition to other items, isolation is very important because the gateway 130 generates a ringing voltage). For configuration settings, the gateway 130 can be connected to a USB port on the PC 150.
The mobile phones of these family members (such as the mobile phone 140) are connected to the charger connected to the gateway through the connection 132. Note that these chargers can be incorporated into the gateway 130, can be individually connected to the gateway 130, and so on. When the configuration setting is started, the PC 150 displays three mobile phones and their corresponding numbers (an exemplary embodiment of the PC 150 can be described in further detail with reference to FIG. 4). Then, the configuration software will try each telephone line 170a-170e to explore the available telephones in the house. When each phone rings, you can enter a descriptive name to help better identify each phone through the reminder of the configuration setting program (descriptive names can also be given to each mobile phone).
Continuing further configuration options, various telephone lines (and corresponding phones) will be selected to route incoming calls on each line of each mobile phone. For example, one or more routing rules can route incoming calls from the son's mobile phone to only the kitchen, TV room, and son's bedroom. The routing rule may also include a time course element. For example, to establish a quiet time, incoming calls to the son's mobile phone in the middle of the night and early morning will be routed to an answering machine (including a voice messaging system). These routing rules can also restrict outgoing calls. During the configuration setting process, a unique ring can be assigned to a mobile phone in the United States to help identify the source of an incoming call. When the configuration setting is completed, the configuration setting information is downloaded from the PC 150 to the gateway 130, so that the gateway can operate correctly without a PC.
Sometimes after the gateway 130 has been configured and set, the father will return home and put his mobile phone into a charger. Later, the correct phone determined by the father's routing rules will ring at home. The phone will ring in accordance with the ring tone that indicates that the father's mobile phone is the source of the call. The father will use the nearest POTS phone to connect the call, that is, as when the family had POTS service before. During the call, he included his wife in the conference call. Again, as when the family had POTS service before, the father quickly hung up the phone, dialed his wife, and quickly hung up the phone to connect to the conference call. This is possible because the gateway maps the POTS telephone network signal to such mobile equivalents.
When the parents are on the phone, the son will decide to call a friend. He plugs the phone into the charger and goes to his room to make a call. He picks up the phone and dials, just like the previous POTS line, except that the gateway will route the son's phone from his room to his mobile phone, but before that the family only had a single POTS line And only one person is allowed to make a call at a time. This is possible because the routing rules of the gateway will associate the phone in the son's room with his mobile phone.
Figure 2 shows some additional details of an exemplary gateway 200 according to the present invention. The gateway 200 includes one or more mobile phone connectors/charging racks 210, one or more phone connectors 220, one or more ground line connections 230, and one or more computer network connectors 240. It should be noted that each of these connections should be broadly interpreted as covering any architecture suitable for linking the gateway 200 to a mobile phone, a telephone line, a land line, and/or a computer network.
In the gateway 200, each of these connectors is connected to one or more circuit interfaces 250. These can be included in the connectors, in the processor 260, or as a separate component, as shown in Figure 2. Show by. One or more storage media 270 stores data 272, routing rules 274, mapping instructions 276, synchronization instructions 278, etc. (Note that, as described above with reference to Figure 4, the storage media can have various forms, including to enhance reliability The full crystal device). The synchronization command 278 is to synchronize the data 272 with the data version stored in a connected mobile phone. For example, the data 272 may directly include a phone call, a call log, and so on. The processor 260 can execute routing rules 274, synchronization instructions 278, mapping instructions 276, and other instructions to guide the operation of the gateway.
The mapping instruction 276 will be used to map the mobile phone network signal to the phone network equivalent, and vice versa. This allows the gateway 200 to display the rich functionality that most mobile phone networks can provide to the phone network. These signals can include call waiting signal, abandon call signal, hold signal, message notification signal, caller ID signal, caller waiting ID signal, call forwarding signal, call forwarding signal, conference call signal, transmission call signal, ringing Voltage signals, dial tone signals, signals used to indicate received messages, etc. The gateway 200 may include various other computer hardware and software as described in Figure 4 below.
The present invention can also be described in terms of methods containing functional steps and/or non-functional actions. The following describes the actions and steps that can be performed when implementing the present invention. Generally, each functional step describes the present invention in terms of the completed result, while non-functional actions are described as more specific actions to achieve a specific result. Although each functional step and/or each non-functional action can be described or claimed in a specific order, the present invention is not necessarily limited to any specific action and/or order or combination of steps.
In detail, Figures 3A-3B show various exemplary actions and steps of the method for routing calls according to the present invention. For incoming calls (Figure 3A), the gateway can perform an action like receiving configuration information from a PC (310A). This configuration setting information can include routing rules, ringing options, other rules, etc. The gateway receives (320A) an incoming call. A step to determine which one or more lines of the individually addressable telephone lines connected to the gateway should be used for routing processing an incoming call (330A) can include executing one or more routing rules on the The action of making an incoming call (332A), executing one or more other actions that control the operation of the gateway (334A), and selecting one or more of the available ringing options to identify the source of the incoming call The operation of the mobile phone (336A).
One is used to map one or more mobile phone network signals to one or more corresponding phone network signals, and to map one or more phone network signals to one or more corresponding mobile phone networks The signal step (340A) may include a translation action (342A) between one or more mobile phone network signals and one or more phone network signals. A step (350A) to route an incoming call to one or more of the individually addressable telephone lines that should be used to route the incoming call determined by the gateway, which may include a call to the incoming call The action of connecting to one or more telephone lines that can be individually addressable identified by each routing rule (352A).
For outgoing calls (Figure 3B), the gateway can perform the action of receiving (310B) configuration information from a PC. It should be noted that this action shown in both Figures 3A (310A) and 3B (310B) does not necessarily require separate receiving actions for incoming and outgoing calls. This configuration information can include routing and other rules. The gateway receives (320B) an outgoing call. A step of determining (330B) which one or more mobile phones and one or more land lines should be selected to carry the outgoing call may include executing (332B) one or more routing rules to the outgoing call Actions, and execute (334B) one or more other actions that can control the operation of the gateway.
One is used to map one or more mobile phone network signals to one or more corresponding phone network signals, and to map one or more phone network signals to one or more corresponding mobile phone networks The signal step (340B) may include a translation action (342B) between one or more mobile phone network signals and one or more phone network signals. A step (350B) for routing an incoming call to one or more mobile phones and one or more land lines, which may include connecting the outgoing call to one or more mobile phones The phone selects one of the actions and one or more ground lines (352B).
Specific embodiments within the scope of the present invention also include computer-readable media for loading or storing computer-executable instructions or data structures thereon. This computer-readable medium can be any usable medium that is accessed by a general-purpose or special-purpose computer. It is only an example and not a limitation. This computer-readable medium can include RAM, ROM; EEPROM, CDROM or other optical disk storage, disk storage or other magnetic storage devices, or any other load or storage that can be used by the computer The desired program code device in the form of executable instructions or data structure, and a medium that can be accessed by a general-purpose or special-purpose computer.
When information is sent or provided to a computer via a network or another communication connection (hardware wire, wireless, or a combination of hardware wire or wireless), the computer will appropriately treat the connection as a computer readable Take the media. As such, any such connection can be appropriately referred to as a computer readable medium. The above combination should also be included in the computer readable medium. Computer-executable instructions include, for example, instructions and data that can start a general-purpose computer, a special-purpose computer, or a special-purpose processing device to perform some functions or a group of functions.
Figure 4 and the following discussion are provided to provide a brief, general description of a suitable computing environment in which the present invention can be implemented. Although not necessary, the present invention is described in a general context in which computer-executable instructions such as program modules are executed by a computer in a network environment. Generally speaking, program modules include subprograms, programs, objects, components, data structures, etc. that can perform specific tasks or implement specific abstract data types. These computer-executable instructions, related data structures, and program modules represent examples of program code devices used to execute each step of the method of the present disclosure. These specific sequences of executable instructions or related data structures are examples of corresponding actions used to implement the functions described in these steps.
Those who are familiar with this technique should immediately understand that the present invention can be implemented in a networked computing environment with a variety of computer system configuration settings, including personal computers, handheld devices, multi-processor systems, microprocessor-based or programmable Consumer electronic devices, network PCs, mini-computers, mainframe computers, etc. The present invention can also be implemented in a distributed computing environment, where it can be locally and remotely linked via a communication network (hardware line link, wireless link, or a combination of hardware line or wireless link) Processing device to perform work. In a distributed computing environment, program modules can be located in both local and remote memory storage devices.
Referring now to Figure 4, this is an exemplary system for implementing the present invention, which includes a general-purpose computing device in the form of a computer 420, which includes a processing unit 421, a system memory 422, and each Type system components, including the system memory 422, are coupled to the system bus 423 of the processing unit 421. The system bus 423 can belong to any type of bus structure including a memory bus or memory controller, a peripheral bus, and a regional bus using any bus architecture. The system memory includes a read-only memory (ROM) 424 and a random access memory (RAM) 425. A basic input/output system (BIOS) 426, which includes basic sub-programs that facilitate the transmission of information between various components in the computer 420 during the booting process, can be stored in the ROM 424.
Although not shown in Figure 4, various connectors and interfaces as shown in Figure 2 do appear. Here, the computer shown in Figure 4 can be used as a gateway. It should be noted that the relative complexity of the gateway may depend on whether its configuration settings appear through an external computer, or whether the gateway is completely self-contained, and other factors. In addition, FIG. 4 only represents a possible specific embodiment of the gateway according to the present invention, or an example of a computer used to configure the gateway. Therefore, many of the hardware and soft system options described in FIG. 4 may be changed due to specific embodiments.

These and other input devices are usually connected to the processing unit 421 through a serial port interface 446 coupled to the system bus 423. Or alternatively, other interfaces such as parallel port, game port or universal serial bus (USB) can be used to connect these input devices. A monitor 447 or another display device can also be connected to the system bus 423 through an interface like the video adapter 448. Of course, the gateway does not require any kind of display, or it may include a display integrated into the gateway itself, such as a relatively small liquid crystal display. In addition to the monitor, the computer 420 may include other peripheral output devices (not shown), such as speakers and printers.
The computer 420 can operate in a network connection environment that uses logical connections to connect to one or more remote computers, such as remote computers 449a and 449b. Each of the remote computers 449a and 449b can be a personal computer, a server, a router, a network PC, a pair of devices or other common network nodes, and usually contains many or all of the above The components described in the computer 420, however, only the memory storage devices 450a and 450b and their related application programs 436a and 436b are shown in Figure 4. The logical connection as depicted in Figure 4 includes a local area network (LAN) 451 and a wide area network (WAN) 452, which are presented here only as examples and not limitations. These networking environments are commonly found in office or enterprise computer networks, corporate intranets, and the Internet.
When used in a LAN network connection environment, the computer 420 will be connected to the local area network 451 through a network interface or adapter 453. When used in a WAN network environment, the computer 420 may include a modem 454, a wireless link or other devices to establish communication on a wide area network 452 such as the Internet. The modem 454, which can be a plug-in type or an external type, is connected to the system bus 423 through a serial port interface 446. In a networked environment, for the computer 420, or a part of it, the program module can be stored in the remote memory storage device. It should be understood that the network connection depicted is exemplary, and other devices may be used to establish communication on the wide area network 452.
The present invention can be implemented in other forms without departing from its spirit and scope. The specific embodiments should be regarded as merely illustrative and not restrictive in all points of view. Therefore, the scope of the present invention should be determined by the scope of the patent application set out later, rather than by the foregoing description.
