Abstract

The embodiments herein relate to methods, a system and routers (400, 600). One method includes (201) assigning, to each router, at least one zone-ID; (202) building a zone table based on the zone ID; (203) exchanging each zone table between all routers in the network; (204) building, for each router, a routing table; (205) receiving, at a source router, a data packet from a host belonging to a zone of the source router; including a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID; (206) determining which destination zone-ID the destination address or the network ID is associated with; (207) adding or including the destination zone-ID to the data packet; and (208) sending the data packet towards a destination router having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet.

    A method for routing of data packets in a network topology, the method comprising:(201) assigning to each router in the network topology, at least one zone identification number, zone-ID;(202) building, in each router, based on the assigned zone-ID, a zone table including at least the zone-ID and if the zone includes at least one leaf network, including in the zone table a network ID of said at least one leaf network;(203) exchanging each zone table between all routers belonging to the network topology in order for each router to have a complete topology zone table including individual zone tables of each router, which topology zone table is stored in each router;(204) building, for each router, a routing table based on zone-IDs so that the routers can reach each other;(205) receiving, at a source router, a data packet from a host belonging to a zone of the source router;wherein the data packet includes a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID;(206) determining, at the source router, from the topology zone table stored in the source router, to which destination zone-ID the destination address, or the network ID is associated with;(207) including, at the source router, the destination zone-ID to the data packet;and 545 400 (208) sending, at the source router, based on the routing table, the data packet towards a destination router having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet.

    The method according to anyone of claims 1-4 wherein adding the zone-ID to the data packet is performed at Layer 2.5.

    The method according to anyone of claims 1-6 wherein exchanging zone tables between routers is performed until all routers in the network topology have the same information on all zone-IDs and associated network IDs.

    A router (400) for routing data packets in a network topology comprising a plurality of routers, the router (400) being assigned at least one zone identification number, zone-ID, the router (400) comprising a processor (410) and a memory (420), said memory (420) containing instructions which when executed by the processor (410) cause the router (400) to perform the following steps:- build a zone table including at least the zone-ID and if the zone includes at least one leaf network, - further including in the zone table, a network ID of said at least one leaf network;- exchange the zone table with said plurality of routers;- receive zone tables from each of said plurality of routers in order for the router (400) to have a complete topology zone table including individual zone tables of each router;which topology zone table is stored in the router;- build a routing table based on zone-IDs for communicating with said plurality of routers;- receive a data packet from a host belonging to the zone of the router (400), wherein the data packet includes a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID;- determine, from the topology zone table stored in the router (400), to which destination zone-ID the destination address ,or the network ID is associated with;545 400 - include the destination zone-ID in the data packet;and - send the data packet, based on the routing table, towards a destination router having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet.

    The router according to anyone of claims 8-10 wherein each zone-ID is associated with a zone name.

    A system for routing of data packets in a network topology comprising a plurality of routers, wherein:- each of the plurality of routers in the system is assigned at least one zone identification number, zone-ID;- wherein each router of the plurality of routers is configured to build, based on the assigned zone-ID, a zone table including the zone-ID and if the zone includes at least one leaf network, including in the zone table a network ID of said at least one leaf network;- exchange each zone table between all routers belonging to the network topology or system in order for each router to have a complete topology zone table including individual zone tables of each router, which topology zone table is stored in each router;545 400 - wherein each router is configured to build, a routing table based on zone-IDs so that the routers can reach each other;- wherein a source router of the plurality of routers in the system or network topology is configured to: - receive, a data packet from a host belonging to a zone of the source router;wherein the data packet includes a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID;determine, from the topology zone table stored in the source router, to which destination zone-ID the destination address, or the network ID is associated with;- include the destination zone-ID in the data packet;and - send, based on the routing table, the data packet towards a destination router, of the plurality of routers, having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet.

    The system according to anyone of claims 12-15 wherein the source router is configured to add the zone-ID to the data packet at Layer 2.5.

    The system according to anyone of claims 12-17 wherein exchanging zone tables between routers is performed until all routers in the topology have the same information on all zone-IDs and associated network IDs.

    A method for routing of data packets in a network topology, the method comprising:- (501) assigning to each router in the network topology, at least one zone identification number, zone-ID;- (502) building, in each router, based on the assigned zone-ID, a zone table including at least the zone-ID and if the zone includes at least one leaf network, including in the zone table a network ID of said at least one leaf network;- (503) receiving at each router, a zone table from all other routers belonging to the network topology;545 400 - (504) building, at each router, a topology zone table including information from each received zone table in order for the routers to have a complete topology zone table including individual zone tables of each router, which topology zone table is stored in the routers and transmitting the complete topology zone table to all other routers in the network topology;- (505) building, for each router, a routing table, based on zone-IDs, so that the routers can reach each other;- (506) receiving, at a source router, a data packet from a host belonging to a zone of the source router;wherein the data packet includes a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID;- (507) determining, at the source router, from the topology zone table stored in the source router, to which destination zone-ID the destination address, or the network ID is associated with;- (508) including, at the source router, the destination zone-ID to the data packet;and - (509) sending, at the source router, based on the routing table, the data packet towards a destination router having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet.

    A router (600) for routing data packets in a network topology comprising a plurality of routers, the router being assigned at least one zone identification number, zone-ID, the router (600) comprising a processor (610) and a memory (620), said memory (620) containing instructions which when executed by the processor (610) cause the router (600) to perform the following steps:545 400 - build a zone table including at least the zone-ID and if the zone includes at least one leaf network, including in the zone table a network ID of said at least one leaf network;- receive from each router, having an assigned zone-ID in the network topology, a zone table;- build a topology zone table including information from each received zone table in order for the router to have a complete topology zone table including individual zone tables of each router, which topology zone table is stored in the router;- transmit the complete topology zone table to all routers in the network topology where it is stored;- build a routing table, based on zone-IDs, for communicating with said plurality of routers;and when the router (600) acts as a source router;the router is configured to: - receive a data packet from a host belonging to the zone of the router (600), wherein the data packet includes a destination address of a host belonging to a network having a network ID;- determine, from the topology zone table to which destination zone-ID the destination address, or the network ID is associated with;- include the destination zone-ID in the data packet;and - send, based on the routing table, the data packet towards a destination router having the assigned destination zone-ID indicated in the data packet. 545 400 5 21. The router (600) according to claim 20 is further configured to update the topology zone table when the router (600) receives from at least one router in the network topology, an update of its zone table and said router (600) is configured to send an updated topology zone table to all routers in the network topology. 10 22. The router (600) according to claim 20 or claim 21 is configured to synchronize with another router acting as a backup router.
