BACKGROUND
Mobile computer devices such as, for example, portable personal digital assistants, mobile phones, etc. allow a user to perform computer and / or communication functions from many locations and while the user is moving with the device. Due to their mobile nature, security is often an essential issue to ensure that a user is authorized to interact with or use the resources of a particular wireless network.
Devices for mobile communication are usually programmed with identification information used by the wireless network to determine whether the specific device is allowed to interact with the network. Another security feature of many mobile communication devices is to define a class mark or profile stored in the mobile phone. The class mark may indicate or limit how the mobile phone will interact with certain wireless networks.
Uses of such limiting technologies make it difficult, not to say impossible, for a mobile communication device (e.g., a mobile phone) to interact with or share information across a plurality of networks. Thus, there is a constant need for better ways of allowing communication devices to interact with a number of networks.
Γ: DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION: 3: 0 The object of the present invention is to reduce or eliminate the above mentioned problems. This purpose and others

Referring to FIG. 1, an embodiment 100 in accordance with the present invention is described. Embodiment 100 may comprise a laptop or communication device 50, such as a mobile communication device (e.g., mobile phone), a two-way radio communication system, a one-way pager, a two-way pager, a personal communication system (PCS), a laptop, or the like. However, it should be appreciated that the scope and application of the present invention is in no way limited by these examples. Other embodiments of the present invention optionally include other computer systems which may or may not be portable, or may also comprise communication systems such as, for example, fixed or portable computers, servers, network switching equipment, etc.
In this particular embodiment, the portable communication device 50 may comprise a processor 10 capable of executing instructions such as instructions stored in a memory.
40th The processor 10 may be a multitude of integrated circuits, such as, for example, a microprocessor, a central processing unit (CPU), a digital signal processor, a microcontroller, a reduced instruction set computer (RISC), a complex instruction set computer (CISC), or the like. although the scope of the present invention is not limited by any particular embodiment or functionality performed by processor 10. In addition, in some alternatives •
· ,. embodiments of the laptop device 50 include several processors which may be of the same or different type. For example, in another embodiment, the laptop device 50 'may comprise a CISC processor for performing general user applications, and a baseband processor which can be used to initiate and receive wireless communications.
The laptop device 50 may also comprise one
523 033 display 20 for providing information to a user, and communication modules 30-32 for providing connection to other devices, services, networks, etc. For example, communication modules 30-32 can be used to allow the portable computer device 50 to communicate with other devices and networks through either a wired or wireless link. As shown, a communication module 30 and an alternating communication module 31 can use antennas 34-35 to communicate wirelessly with a first wireless network 60 and a second wireless network 61, respectively.
Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the communication modules 30-31 may utilize a variety of wireless communication protocols, such as mobile (e.g., Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile radiotelephone systems, Global Radio for Mobile Communications (GSM) radiotelephone systems). mobile radio telephone systems for North American Digital Cellular (NADC), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) systems, mobile radio telephone systems for ExtendedTDMA (E-TDMA), third generation systems (3G) such as Wideband CDMA (WCDMA), CDMA-2000, and the like).
In addition, communication modules can use other protocols for wireless local area network (WLAN), wide area network (WAN), or local area network (LAN), such as the standard for Industrial Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11, Bluetooth ™, infrared, etc. (Bluetooth is a registered trademark of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group).
It is to be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited by the type, number, or frequency of the communication protocols that can be used by the portable communication device 50. In addition, alternative embodiments may have only two communication modules (either wired or wireless), and the communication modules need not have separate antennas. , and some or all of them can share a common antenna.
523 033 / ο
In this particular embodiment, the portable communication device 50 may communicate or interact with a LAN (e.g., the first network 60) and a mobile network (e.g., the second network 61). By communicating with both networks 60-61, as will be described below, this may allow the network 60 to share or exchange information with the network 61 via the portable communication device 50. Alternatively, this may allow network 60 to modify how the portable communication device interacts with the network 61. If, in one embodiment, for example, the network 60 is the LAN connected to a hospital, the network 60 may change the operating characteristics of the portable communication device 50 so that the user is prevented from receiving calls from a mobile network (e.g. network 61), or the two networks can work together to alternately direct the incoming call to another negotiated medium.
The portable communication device 50 may also comprise a memory 40 which may comprise a variety of volatile or persistent memories, such as any of the types of storage media mentioned previously, although this list is obviously not intended to be exhaustive, and the scope of the present invention is not limited in scope. this regard. The memory 40 can be used to store instruction sets, such as instructions associated with an application program, an operating system program, a communication protocol program, etc. The instructions stored ··. in memory 40, for example, can be used to perform wireless communications, provide security functionality for the «
portable computer device 50, user functionality such as * *: calendar, email, internet surfing, etc. Memory 40 can also: * 30 be used to store or maintain a class mark that can be used to define the operating characteristics of portable communication device 50.
Referring to FIG. 2 is a particular embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a logical model diagram which
523 033
<img file="SE523033C2_D0005.tif" />
represents the connection and interaction between operations that may take place within the laptop device 50. It should be understood that the operations shown can be implemented through any combination of hardware and software. In other embodiments, the operations shown in FIG. 2 and / or discussed below, is implemented entirely in hardware or entirely in software. Further, those parts of the operations that are implemented, at least in part, in software can be implemented through an operating system, user applications, company products, etc., although the scope of the present invention is not limited to only these examples.
In operation, the portable communication device 50 can dynamically generate and maintain a class mark 200. The class mark profile 200 may be a compilation of data defining or indicating current functions or attributes of the portable communication device 50. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the functions or attributes may include actual physical functions, logical functions, communication functions, processing functions, and / or user preferences of the portable communication device 50.
Simply put, the class mark 200 may be a list which provides information on various aspects of the operation of the portable communication device 50, so that the execution of applications or functionality can be changed or adapted to balance different functional characteristics. The information provided by
For example, the class mark 200 can be used to change how instructions (for example, user applications) are executed to: * achieve a desired user-defined function level. The data can also be used to limit the amount of power possibly consumed during operation of the portable communication device.
50th Alternatively, the class mark 200 may be used to select it: method by which the portable communication device 50
523 033 '4 communicates, to take into account such factors as cost, reliability, security, bandwidth, power consumption, service quality (QoS), interference, etc., although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard.
Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the class mark 200 may be stored or maintained in a memory (non-permanent or permanent) within the portable communication device 50. For example, the information constituting the class mark 200 may be stored as a table in the memory 40 (see FIG. 1). Alternatively, the class mark 200 may be stored or maintained in registers, cache memory (s), latches, or other circuits.
In operation, the portable communication unit 50 may comprise a service detection operation 210, which can be used to query communication modules, to determine which communication services are currently available. For example, operation 210 for detecting service may query communication modules 30-32 (see FIG. 1) to determine which communication techniques are currently available and characteristics of these techniques (i.e. cost, reliability, bandwidth, etc.). For example, the portable communication device 50 may be designed to communicate with a mobile service network (61), a wireless LAN (e.g., network 60), or through a wired connection.
As a user moves, the time may change with time **; the communication services available to the portable communication device 50. In addition, the level, cost, or quality of the service may also change. For example, the user may move or migrate so that it: * communicates with a mobile system that is not part of its *: normal or low-cost service network. Thus, although: the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the service discovery module 210 periodically updates the class mark 200. Alternatively, the module 210 for
523 033 service discovery make the updates as soon as there are changes in the communication services available (for example when the user is no longer within reach).
The information in the class mark 200 can be used by applications carried out in the portable communication device to select the communication technology which may be the most cost-effective, most secure, fastest, and consumes the least amount of power, etc., although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard. . The applications can also be designed to dynamically make changes as the user moves and the availability of special communication methods changes. The applications can also use the information in the class mark 200 to determine which services are provided to the user, or how these services are provided.
The laptop device 50 may also be configured to enable a user to define any user preference. Such information can be tracked and provided by a user preference module 230. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited to these examples, the user preference module 230 may indicate particular functional levels desired by a user, indicate a desired service quality (QoS) for operation, indicate a desired cost or security level for particular services or specialties, indicate a desired level of power consumption. , etc. This information can be used to indicate with the class mark 200 to prioritize which · '. hardware or software to be used by the application performed on the portable communication device 50. This
· .. information can also be used to select or prioritize · '; the communication method to be used by the portable: communication device 50 in various situations.
The portable communication device 50 may also have a physical service module 240 which can update the class mark 200 by
·: Regarding status or availability of specific: hardware components (eg memory, cache,
523 033 iH processing functions, input / output devices, etc.) within the portable communication device 50. This information can provide the physical functions of the portable communication device 50, which can be indicated by the class mark 200. This information can be used by applications performed within the portable communication device. 50, to select which hardware or software to use during the execution of these applications. For example, the applications may select the memory to be used for storage, or select the I / O device for receiving and providing information, although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard.
The laptop device 50 may also have a logical service module 250 which can update the class mark 200 for status or availability of various logical services (e.g. Javascript, translator, postal services, etc.) within the portable communication device 50. This information may provide the logical functions of the portable communication device 50, which can be indicated by the class mark 200. This information can be used by applications implemented within the portable communication device 50, to select which logical services to use in executing these applications.
The portable communication device 50 may also include a system load monitor 260 which can update the class mark 200 with respect to its current use or load level for components within the portable.
The communication device 50. Although the present invention:: scope is not limited in this regard,
30 the system load monitor 260 includes any combination of hardware and / or software that can track the historical or current load of the components within the portable * ·· communication device 50. The system load monitor 260 can .. for example, track current bandwidth (i.e. available
523 033
<img file="SE523033C2_D0006.tif" />
processing function - usually measured in millions of instructions per second (MIPS)) for the processor 10 (see FIG. 1). Alternatively, the system load monitor 260 may also track the use of memory components, caches, or I / O devices in the portable communication device 50. This information may then be reflected in the client class mark 200. Since this information can be changed dynamically, the system load monitor 260 may update the client class mark 200 constantly or periodically, although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard.
This information can be used by applications performed in the portable communication device 50 to adapt, or other applications, so that instructions can be executed or functions can be given to a user within the desired functional parameters. This information can be used, for example, to lower the voltage potential or clock speed of the processor 10, and thus the power consumption, of the portable communication device 50 if sufficient bandwidth is available to execute applications according to user expectations.
Applications 270, such as user applications, operating system applications, or company products, can use the information available with the class mark 200 to adjust or customize their implementation. In addition, as a user moves and manages the laptop device 50, the available functions may be changed. The class mark 200 can thus be dynamically generated, or alternatively updated periodically, although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard. It is to be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited to any subset of modules shown in Figure 2 and which provides information used to set or define the class mark 200.
In alternative embodiments, the class mark 200 may be set or defined from sources other than those shown in FIG. 2nd
In other embodiments, for example, the networks 60 and / or 61 may be designed to modify or set the class mark 200. This in turn may allow one of the networks communicating with the portable communication device 50 to change or change how another network communicates with the portable communication device. 50, which will be explained with reference to FIG. 3rd
FIG. 3 illustrates a method according to an embodiment of the present invention for how a network can modify the class mark of a portable communication device. The process can be initiated by a first network (e.g., network 60 in FIG. 1) contacting a client device (e.g., the portable communication device 50, block 300). The network 60 can again be any of a variety of wireless or fixed networks that can announce information to the portable: communication device 60, such as the types of services that are provided.
Available with network 60, connection configurations or protocols for network 60, restrictions in the environment,: user interface specifications, etc., although *: the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard.
The portable communication device 50 can then announce the host network 60 and evaluate its properties for

hardware and / or software to determine which response, if any, to be sent to network 60, block 301. The client (e.g., the portable communication device 50) may then further inform the network 60 of its operating characteristics. For example, the portable communication device 50 may inform the network 60 of the physical, logical and / or functional characteristics of the portable communication device 50.
Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, this can be accomplished by providing the network 60 with all or part of the class mark 200 for the portable communication device 50.
Thereafter, network 60 may initiate a process of modifying, modifying or updating the class mark 200 of portable communication device 50, block 302. This, in turn, may modify or alter how portable communication device 50 interacts or communicates with network 60, or with other networks ( e.g., network 61). Alternatively, this may also enable the first network 60 to be able to communicate with or share information with the second network.
61.
Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the network 60 can initiate conditional control over the portable communication device 50. In other words, the network 60 can access certain resources for hardware and / or software within the portable communication device 50.
Alternatively, the portable communication device 50 may permit: that the network 60 controls some internal resources of the portable communication device 50. The network 60 can, for example, use the output resources (eg display, sound, etc.)
J (j0 to provide information or services to the user.
In another embodiment, the network 60 may modify the class mark 200 of the portable communication device 50.
. * ·· This can change or change how the laptop
... · the communication device 50 interacts with other networks.

<img file="SE523033C2_D0009.tif" />
For example, the network 60 may modify the class mark of the portable communication device 50 to prevent any communication with the network 51, or alternatively modify the class mark 200 to prevent any incoming or outgoing calls from the network 61. This may be desirable, for example, to prevent a user from receiving receiving or sending mobile communications while the user is in an environment where such communications are prohibited (e.g. a hospital, a theater, library, etc.).
In another embodiment, the network 60 may use the conditional control over the portable communication device 50, to communicate with or share information with other networks (e.g., network 61). For example, network 60 may communicate with network 61 using the resources of portable communication device 50.
The network 60 may thus be authorized to be able to access information specific to the portable communication device 50, or alternatively personal information about the user. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the network 60 may be designed to obtain information from the network 61, such as the user's preferences for purchases, financial information for the user to simplify purchases. The user can, of course, control or limit what, if any, information is exchanged through the use of the user's preferences. Alternatively, a parent can control or define what information is exchanged or what services are made available to children using
· .. the portable communication device 50.
If the network 60 can communicate and interact with the network: * 30, then the network 60 may be capable of providing additional services to the user of the portable communication device 50. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, for example, the network: 60 may be the ability to respond to incoming calls from the network

61, and providing voice message services if the portable communication device 50 is not allowed to receive calls while in the environment. The network 60 may thus be capable of communicating with the network 61 in the user's place. Alternatively, the network 60 may be capable of informing the user of the portable communication device that he or she is not allowed to receive calls, or that they have a call waiting for them. This type of collaboration between the networks can be pre-arranged services that different local networks can activate and use if additional infrastructure requirements are met, such as those for routing voice calls.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention, network 60 may change client class mark 200 to enable network 61 to provide services to the user of portable communication device 50. In some situations, network 61 may not provide portable communication device 50 with a particular service or services. This may be due to a variety of reasons, the environment surrounding the user, logical, physical, functional limitations of the portable communication device 50, etc.
Thus, network 60 may share resources or enable other networks to provide a service to portable communication device 50 which they would otherwise not be able to provide. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the network 60 may, for example, provide information, such as biofilm times, so that the network 65 can then inform the user of the portable communication device 50 when a favorite movie: 3O is available. Consequently, in this particular embodiment, the network 60 may be capable of changing which services are available to a user from another ·: network (e.g., the network 61).
: Returning to FIG. 3 in this particular example as

As shown, it may be possible for the network 60 and the portable communication device 50 to share resources, to further enhance the experience provided to the user, block 303. Although the scope of the present invention is not limited in this regard, the combination of information and resources available between the network 60, the network 61 and the portable communication device 50 may improve the functions available to the user, or even provide services which are otherwise cases would not be available. For example, it is possible for the combination to provide information (e.g. messages, voice mail, etc.) to the user, or to enable the portable communication device 50 to serve as an access point for other wired or wireless devices. The combination can also allow new collaborative services to be built between networks that will support the needs of the environment, such as routing calls from one mobile network over another infrastructure to a local network, which then uses a non-mobile transport mechanism to communicate with the portable communication device 50.
The present invention may be implemented in an article comprising a storage medium on which instructions are stored which result in the inventive procedure when performed by a computer platform.
While certain features of the invention have been illustrated here ··. and described, many modifications, replacements, changes and equivalents will now be apparent to those skilled in the art. It is therefore to be understood that the appended claims are · '; intended to cover all such modifications and modifications as: ** S0 falls within the scope of the invention.
