The present invention relates to communication devices and more particularly to portable communication devices, of the kind specified in claim 1. Background
Due to the ever-increasing popularity of portable electronic devices, such as cordless telephones and personal organizers, greater emphasis has been placed on designing these low-weight devices and compact designs that are easily portable. Even if a user enjoys the portability of these devices, he may still need to carry multiple devices at the same time in order to have access to two-way voice communication and data communication. Having to carry separate devices for a cordless phone and a personal organizer can be difficult for the user. In addition, these devices typically require separate battery chargers and the disorder that often comes with having multiple devices with multiple battery chargers can be very troublesome for the user. Thus, there is a need for a portable communication device that incorporates two-way voice and data communication.
Brief description of the drawings
Fig. 1 is a drawing showing a communication device in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a second drawing showing the communication device according to the present invention. Detailed description of the preferred embodiment
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings shows a portable radio, or pocket telephone, 100 in accordance with the present invention. The pocket telephone 100, which will be described herein, provides two-way voice communication with a personal organizer. In the preferred embodiment, the pocket telephone 100 is a second generation wireless

However, pocket telephone (CT2), other communication devices, such as cellular telephones, may also utilize the present invention. The pocket telephone 100 includes a cover 102 and a cover, or front cover 104, which is connected to the cover by a hinge 106. A plurality of buttons are included in the cover 104 for providing the ability to dial a number, menu scroll and other similar functions associated with cordless phones. An antenna 110 is also included in the pocket telephone 100 as a means for transmitting and receiving a radio frequency signal. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, said plurality of buttons 108 are comprised as part of a keypad membrane arranged between two plastic parts to form the cover 104. Thin materials, such as a single rubber member, may also be used to form the cover 104 comprising the buttons 108. In the cover 104, there is also a display window for displaying scroll menus and information generated by pressing the buttons 108. Pressure areas (shown in Fig. 2) located behind each button move a predetermined distance as the button is pressed so that contact with the a touch-sensitive screen, shown later, is provided without damaging the screen.
A sensing switch is included in the hinge 106 to detect movement of the hatch 104 between a first, or open, position and a second, or closed position. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pocket telephone 100 functions as a CT2 telephone when the door is in the closed position, and the user can use the front keypad for typical CT2 telephone functions. When the door is opened, the sensing switch in the hinge 106 sends a signal to a control member located within the housing 100 to indicate that the pocket telephone should switch to function as a personal organizer according to well-known technology.
In Fig. 2, the pocket telephone 100 is shown with the cover 104 in the open position. By opening the cover 104, the switch located in the hinge 106 senses the change in the position of the hatch and sends a signal to the control member which activates a screen, or lens, 202 connected to the cover 102, to act as the personal organizer. When the cover 104 is in the open position, and thus displays the entire screen 202, the user has access to an entire writing table provided through the screen 202, on which one can make notes, store messages or sketches and perform other data operations. The screen 202 is preferably a touch sensitive liquid crystal display (LCD) that responds to minimal pressure. Screen 202 may use touch-sensitive film or other similar means to receive data input. Data is transmitted to screen 202 in the form of button presses when cover 104 is closed or handwritten data when cover is open. A pin 112, which is preferably located in a case 112 next to the pocket telephone 100, can be removed and used as a writing tool to send handwritten data to the screen 202 when the cover 104 is closed.
The pressure surfaces 204, which are located on the inside of the cover 104, are also shown in Fig. 2. When a button 108 is pressed down on the front side with the cover 104 closed, pressure is applied, via the pressure surfaces 204, to preferably a touch-sensitive activation surface 206 corresponding to each button on the screen 202. Each pressure surface 204 is aligned with a corresponding activation surface 206 when the cover 104 is in the closed position. When a button is depressed by the user, the pressure surface 204 moves a predetermined distance to contact the corresponding actuation surface 206. These actuation surfaces 206 are shown only to describe the function of the buttons when the lid 104 is closed. When the user opens the cover 104, the actuation surface 206 no longer acts as a keypad. Further, on the inside of the cover 104, there is a shock absorber 208, which is preferably made of rubber material and positioning the buttons 108 and the pressurized surfaces 204 at a predetermined distance from the surface of the lens 202 when the cover 104 is in the closed position. The shock absorber 208 helps prevent failure
522 842 button presses and also helps to protect lens 202 from breaking and being scratched.
When the pocket telephone 100 is used as a personal organizer when the cover 104 is in the open position, signal information can still be received with the antenna 110, and the user can be alerted to an incoming call. The user can then close the cover 104 and use the pocket phone as a cordless telephone to answer the call.
As the pocket telephone has been described by the present invention, it provides two modes of use by combining two-way voice communication with a personal organizer. By combining a wireless pocket phone and a personal organizer, the number of electronic devices that a user must carry is reduced. The pocket phone, as described by the present invention, can also be charged from a single battery charger which eliminates the need for multiple battery chargers. The cover, or cover, when in the closed position, provides increased protection for the lens from breaking and soiling.
Although preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it should be understood that the present invention is not limited to these embodiments. Many modifications, modifications, variations, substitutions and equivalents may occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
