Cigarette paper with a refractory lattice grid and method of making such paper
Cigarettes are already known, the paper of which includes a non-combustible reinforcement, for example of asbestos or metal, which remains in the form of a grid, after the tobacco and paper have been consumed, and holds the ashes. However, these solutions are expensive and difficult to implement.
It has also been the idea to insert a web of tissue-resistant material into the cigarette paper using, for example, silicone lacquer. The disadvantage of these solutions is that the grids either have too small openings to allow a good pull or are too thin to provide sufficient resistance.
The present invention has for its object to mitigate these disadvantages and relates to a cigarette paper having a breakthrough mesh of a refractory to retain the ashes in place after the combustion of the tobacco and the paper, and characterized in that the elements forming this network are easily profiled and connection points are reinforced to give the unit sufficient rigidity.
It further has the object of providing a method for industrial implementation of the impregnation of a thin and brittle material such as cigarette paper, characterized in that at least one relief roll is used to impregnate the net in the paper, which co-operates with a roller which is covered with a soft coating, which presses the paper between the two rollers and advances it, providing means for depositing said substance on the relief roll.
It further relates to a cigarette obtained with a paper according to the invention and characterized in that the elements of said web overlap each other at the glued edges of the cylinder forming the cigarette.
The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show examples of ways of carrying out the invention as well as examples of the paper and cigarette. Figures 1 and 2 schematically show two devices according to the invention. Fig. 3 shows the apparatus of Fig. 2 seen in the direction of arrow A. Fig. 4 shows a third embodiment from the same direction as Figs. 3- Figs. 5 and 5a show from above and respectively. in section one by means of the device according to FIG. 4 6 and 6a show in analogous manner a paper obtained by means of the device of Figures 2 and 3. Figures 7 and 7a show perspective and resp. in section a cylinder of an impregnated paper. Fig. 8 shows a cigarette according to the invention.
The substance used for impregnation consists of:
- a refractory product such as sodium silicate (35-40 #)
a binding and combustion retardant product such as talc, mica or calcium carbonate (30-35 #)
- an emollient product, such as gum arabic or paraffin, previously treated with glucose to compensate for the basicity of the silicate ($ 5-10)
- a dye, such as titanium white (5-10 #)
- a solvent such as, for example, demineralized water (5-10 #). Aromatic, coloring or beneficial substances can also be added.
In the device shown in Fig. 1, the refractory is found in a reservoir 1, in which the liquid level is kept constant in the manner not shown and the substance is constantly stirred to be homogeneous. This mixture is carried by a wetting roller 2, the excess being removed by a control roll 3, and transferred to relief elements on a roller 4 having rectilinear longitudinal profiles. The profiles are dimensioned to form strips of a width of about 0.5 mm on a paper and a distance of about 3 second of 3 ms which dimensions are optimal for achieving satisfactory tensile and rigidity. The paper 5 passes between the roller 4 and a support roller 6 with adjustable pressure, which presses the paper against the profiles of the roller 4. To avoid the spread of the substance in the paper due to capillarity, it is heated by a suitable device 7, for example by infrared radiation. The paper then passes through a second system which differs from the first only in the embodiment of the rollers 4 'which extend transversely. By passing the paper through two systems, at the connection points between the applied strips, a surplus of material can be obtained, which is intended to reinforce the mesh of the mesh.
In the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3, there is found the liquid reservoir 8, in which a roll 9 descends, which has the elements submerged, which would form the net on the paper, the excess refractory liquid is removed by a doctor 10. The paper 11 is heated by a device 13 after passing between the roll 9 and a support roll 12. The paper then passes through an analog system whose roll 9 'has transverse profiles. The profiles of the rollers 9 and 9 'may be rectilinear or have wavy or cracked lines. It is also possible to use a roll with corrugated profiles, such as shown in Fig. 3, and a roll with rectilinear profiles.
In the two devices described, it is possible to impregnate the two strip series perpendicular to each other on the same side of the paper or on either side. The advantage of treating the paper in two operations is that it allows it to deform in the profiles, which makes the network element more solid.
The device shown in Fig. 4 differs from the previous in that the net is applied to the paper in a single operation, the roller 9 provided with a submerged net being the only element different from the impregnation system shown in Fig. 3. In order to obtain a network whose connection points are sufficiently resilient, the roller 9 has deeper depressions 14 at the connection points so that the paper obtained with the device, a small part of which is shown in FIG. 2 and 3, at the connection points 14 having a material accumulation.
In Figs. 6 and 6a, a device shown in Figs.
and 3 obtained paper, which has a slight ripple caused by a contraction of the material, which ripple is reduced by the stretch of the paper in the manufacture of the cigarette.
IN
In order to obtain a cigarette, a paper cylinder is formed, at which the glued edges of the net portions overlap (Figs. 7 and 7a). When you light the cigarette, the contact with its glow hearth makes the elements of the network progressively merge.
Fig. 8 shows a partially consumed cigarette. In the region 15 only the reinforcement remains, in the region 16 the ashes are held in place by the net, while the paper is burnt, and in the region 17 the cigarette is not yet consumed.
To prevent the ash from falling from the end of the cigarette, you can fold the edges of the paper after hardening this part of the paper with a suitable material such as starch.
