TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention relates to communication, and more specifically to managing mutual reverse link interference in a communication system.
BACKGROUND
In a typical telecommunications network based on CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO, according to the "3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 '3GPP2' CDMA2000 High Rate Packet Data Air Interface Specification", 3GPP2 C.S0024, Version 3.0, December 5, 2001, the management of traffic load The reverse link from mobile stations or access terminals to a base station is determined by a parameter known as coefficient of over-thermal (ROT).
Reverse link in a CDMA system 2000 1xEV-DO are multiplexed using code division (CDM) and are therefore limited by interference problems. In a communication system for mutual interference limiting reverse link transmission of each access terminal is an interference to other access terminals. The access terminal can transmit at a higher data rate if the interference level from other access terminals below. Furthermore, if one of the access terminals is transmitting with higher data rate, other access terminals may experience more interference from the access terminal is transmitting at an increased rate of data transmission.
It is desirable to achieve three major goals in the design of CDM network, namely, to maximize the overall throughput of the network in any given sector of a base station, to maintain stable reverse link operations, and to ensure coverage network boundaries. However, these goals tend to conflict with one another and achieving these goals simultaneously requires a special load control in the network.
In many practical situations coefficient ROT may be neluchshem indicator of sector loading, and it can not be based on a single parameter to control the traffic load uplink to minimize mutual reverse link interference among access terminals while ensuring adequate bandwidth to system data wireless communication system. Therefore, a need exists in the art a new scheme for controlling reverse link loading in a wireless communication system.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following embodiments meet these needs by implementing an apparatus and method in which the maximum effective noise power spectral density is used as a parameter for controlling reverse link interference, by setting a reverse activity bit (RAB), to signal the access terminals to the need to reduce their data rates if the maximum effective noise power spectral density is above a predetermined threshold.

Detailed description
The term "exemplary" is used herein to mean "serving as an example, instance, illustration." Any embodiment described below as "exemplary" is not necessarily to be construed as preferred or advantageous over other embodiments.
The subscriber station with a high data rate (HDR), referred to herein as an access terminal (AT), may be mobile or stationary, and may communicate with one or more base stations HDR-type, also known as modem pool transceivers (MRI) . An access terminal transmits and receives data packets through one or more modem pool transceivers to a base station controller HDR-type, also known as a modem pool controller (MPC). Modem pool transceivers and modem pool controllers are nodes of a network called an access network. The access network forwards data packets between multiple access terminals. The access network may be further connected to additional networks outside the access network, such as a corporate intranet or the Internet, and can forward data packets between each access terminal and the network is similar objects. An access terminal that has established an active traffic channel connection with one or more base stations is called an active access terminal, and is determined to be in a traffic state. An access terminal that is in the process of establishing an active traffic channel connection with one or more base stations is determined to be in a connection setup state. An access terminal may be any data device that communicates through a wireless channel or a wired channel, for example using fiber optic or coaxial cables. An access terminal may be any of a number of devices, including but not limited to, PC cards, portable flash memory, external or internal modem, wireless or wireline phone. The communication link through which the access terminal sends signals to the base station is called a reverse link. The communication link through which a base station sends signals to an access terminal is called a forward link.
Exemplary embodiments are described below with reference to the reduction of interference on the reverse link in a wireless communication system corresponding to CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO Rev-5 known as the "3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 '3GPP2' CDMA2000 High Rate Packet Data Air Interface Specification ". However, the present invention can be used to reduce the reverse link interference in various types of CDMA communication systems.
1 is a simplified block diagram of a wireless communication system including a base station 2, the base station controller 4 connected to the base station 2, and a plurality of access terminals 6, 8, 10, 12 in communication with the base station 2. Base station 2 comprises at least one antenna 14, a transceiver 16 connected to an antenna 14, a computer 18 connected to the transceiver 16 for computing a maximum effective noise power spectral density among the access terminals, block 20 Position reverse activity bit (RAB) connected a computer 18 for computing a maximum effective noise power spectral density and the transceiver 16. The base station 2 may also comprise various other components of a typical CDMA system, not explicitly shown in Figure 1, but known to those skilled in the art.
Base station 2 may transmit signals to antennas 22, 24, 26 and 28 of the terminals 6, 8, 10, 12, access through the straight lines 30, 32, 34 and 36, and receives signals from the access terminals through reverse links 38, 40, 42 and 44, respectively. In order to simplify the illustration of Figure 1 shows only one sector antenna 14 associated with the base station 2, although a typical station may have several antennas covering all sectors of a cell, and each sector antenna may communicate with multiple access terminals simultaneously. Furthermore, some of the terminals 6, 8, 10 and 12 need not necessarily be access within the same sector. An access terminal outside a given sector of the base station may transmit with a sufficiently high power level and contribute significantly to the burden for a given sector, thereby resulting in increased interference for other access terminals that include the given sector in their active sets. The base station may include a plurality of sectors covered by different antennas, or may include only one sector of the coated within 360 degrees through an omnidirectional antenna.
Figure 2 is a block diagram illustrating an embodiment for controlling reverse link loading based on the maximum effective noise power spectral density according to the present invention. As shown in Figure 2, the effective noise power spectral density at each of the access terminals that are power controlled by the sector of the base station is determined as indicated in block 50. In an embodiment, the load control reverse link implemented using a maximum noise spectral density ( Nt, max) without pilot interference compensation signal (PIC). If payment pilot interference signal does not occur, then the ratio of noise power spectral density (Nt, i) of the terminal (i) access to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (N0) and interference from other access terminals that contribute significantly to the sector loading base station is given by equation (1) as follows:
<img file="00000001.tif" he="11" wi="128" img-format="tif" img-content="undefined" />
where Nt, i - noise power spectral density of terminal i to access, I0 - spectral density of the total received power at the base station, Ec, i - energy chip terminal i to access, N0 - power spectral density of the thermal noise, Ecp, j - chip energy pilot j-th access terminal, which is another access terminal other than the i-th access terminal, and Ec, overhead, j - chip energy overhead channels j-th access terminal. In the embodiment, the overhead channels include a data request channel (DRC) channel and receive an acknowledgment (ACK). In another embodiment, the overhead channels further include a reverse rate indicator channel link (RRI) channel and an auxiliary pilot. The energy of the chip, Ec, overhead, j, is the total chip energy of all overhead channels. In equation (1) Ec, traf, j is the chip energy of the traffic channels j-th access terminal. Therefore, the spectral density (Nt, i) the noise power (Nt, i) the access terminal i is the sum of the spectral density N0 thermal noise power and interference caused by transmissions of other access terminals, ie, the sum of the chip energy of channels including traffic channels, overhead channels and pilot channels of other access terminals. Chip energy of channels access terminal i itself is not considered in the calculation of the spectral density Nt, i of the noise power in the access terminal i.
In the embodiment in which the compensation of interference caused by pilot signals does not occur in the base station, an access terminal with the minimum chip energy (Ec, min) is selected from the access terminals that are considered to have contributed significantly to the load sector, and the spectral density ( I0) the total received power (I0) in the base station is measured. The maximum noise power spectral density (Nt, max) is calculated according to equation (2) as follows:
<img file="00000002.tif" he="6" wi="129" img-format="tif" img-content="undefined" />
In an embodiment, the ratio of the spectral density of the noise power spectral density to the thermal noise power (Nt, i / N0) is calculated for each of the access terminals.
In another embodiment, the load control reverse link implemented using a maximum effective noise spectral density (Nt, max, effective) with compensation of interference caused by pilot signal (PIC). In a system where payment is realized the interference caused by the pilot signal interference perceived by the access terminal may be lower because the base station has the ability to compensate for interference from the pilot channels of some or all of the access terminals that are power controlled by a particular sector of the base station. Using the compensation interference caused by a pilot signal, the effective noise spectral density (Nt, i, effective) at access terminal i is determined by equations (3) and (4) as follows:
<img file="00000003.tif" he="27" wi="134" img-format="tif" img-content="undefined" />
wherein Ac - a set of access terminals whose pilot channels can be compensated by the base station. In an embodiment, the set Ac comprises some or all of the access terminals that are power controlled by a particular sector of the base station. In one embodiment, not all the pilot channels of the access terminals in the set Ac are compensated by interference, and aj is the fraction of the number of access terminals in the set Ac, pilot channels which are offset by the base station. In this embodiment, the overhead channels such as DRC channels, ACK channels, RRI channels or auxiliary pilot channels of the access terminals in the set Ac, is not compensated by the base station. In another embodiment, can be compensated by the other reverse link channels including one or more data channels of one or more access terminals that are power controlled by the base station.
After the effective noise power spectral densities at the access terminals are determined, the maximum effective noise power spectral density (Nt, max, effective) among these terminals are selected as indicated by block 52 in Figure 2. In one embodiment, the ratio of the maximum effective noise power spectral density to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (Nt, max, effective / N0) is chosen as the parameter to determine whether to establish a reverse activity bit (RAB) to one or zero.
After the maximum effective noise power spectral density (Nt, max, effective) is determined, a reverse activity bit RAB either set, meaning that the RAB is set to one or not is set, meaning that the RAB is set to zero, depending on the whether the value Nt, max, effective more than a predetermined threshold, as indicated by block 54 in Figure 2. If the value Nt, max, effective is greater than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is set to one to signal all of the access terminals that are power controlled sector, it is necessary to lower their data rates to control the sector loading in order to minimize interference among access terminals. If the value Nt, max, effective is less than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is not set, that is, set to zero to indicate all the access terminals that are power controlled sectors that are not required to lower the data rate for load control sector. In one embodiment, the ratio of the maximum effective noise power spectral density to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (Nt, max, effective / N0) is compared with a predetermined threshold to determine whether to establish a reverse activity bit RAB or not.
In one embodiment, it takes into account only the effective noise power spectral densities of the access terminals that contribute significantly to the sector loading, while the access terminals which do not contribute or contribute negligibly small contribution to the load of the sector are ignored when determining whether to establish a RAB or not. In one embodiment, takes into consideration only those access terminals which include the given sector of the base station in their active sets. The filtered ratio of pilot chip energy to the effective signal-noise power spectral density (Ecp / Nt), arriving at the antenna for each of the access terminals under consideration is computed in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The filtered ratio (Ecp / Nt), attributable to the antenna for each of these access terminals is then compared with a predetermined set point. If the filtered ratio (Ecp / Nt), relating to the antenna for a particular access terminal is below the predetermined setpoint by more than the predetermined offset, e.g., 2 dB, then the access terminal is deemed irrelevant to the sector loading and therefore ignored in determining whether RAB to install or not.
Alternatively, the determination of whether an access terminal contributes a significant contribution to the sector load may be based on the fact whether the set tracking data request channel (DRCLock) of the access terminal or not. Data Request Channel (DRCLock) is a reverse link channel known to those skilled in the field of CDMA communication systems. If the tracking data request channel (DRCLock) of the access terminal is not set, the access terminal may be deemed irrelevant to the sector loading and therefore ignored in the determination of whether or not to establish RAB.
In another embodiment, the determination of whether an access terminal contributes a significant contribution to the sector load may be based on the filtered channel loss of reverse link communications from the access terminal to the base station. For example, the transmission power of the access terminal can be transmitted to the base station through one of the reverse link channels, and the received power at the base station can be measured directly by the base station. The filtered path loss reverse link from the access terminal to the base station can be calculated in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The filtered path loss is then compared with a predetermined threshold. If the filtered path loss above the predetermined threshold, the access terminal may be deemed irrelevant to the sector loading and therefore ignored in the determination of whether or not to establish RAB.
In an embodiment, the upper threshold coefficient (ROT) over-thermal (I0 / N0), which is usually defined as the ratio of the spectral density of the total received power (I0) to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (N0), is set for the sector to avoid overloading the neighboring sectors. If the ratio ROT greater than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is set to one to signal all of the access terminals that are power controlled in the sector, it is necessary to lower their data rates regardless of whether the parameter Nt, max, effective / N0 enough large to initiate installation RAB.
In one embodiment, if only one access terminal that is power controlled, is active in the sector, the RAB is not set, i.e. set to zero, so that the access terminal need not reduce its data rate, if the ratio ROT below a predetermined threshold to avoid overloading the neighboring sectors.
3 is a block diagram illustrating another embodiment of the process of determining the RAB to signal the access terminals to the need to change their data rates of the reverse link to operate by interference among the access terminals. As shown in Figure 3, an initial determination is performed as to which terminals contribute significantly to the sector loading as indicated by block 60. Next, the maximum effective noise power spectral density (Nt, max, effective) for the access terminals that are considered contributing significantly contribution to the sector loading as indicated by block 62. In an embodiment, the ratio of the maximum effective noise power spectral density to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (Nt, max, effective / N0) is calculated and used as a parameter for determining whether the base station should signal access terminals that are power controlled by the sector that they should reduce their data rates in order to control the load of the sector.
After the maximum effective noise power spectral density (Nt, max, effective) is determined, a reverse activity bit RAB is set, meaning that the RAB is set to one, or not set, meaning that the RAB is set to zero, depending on whether whether the value Nt, max, effective more than a predetermined threshold, as indicated by block 64 in Figure 3. If the Nt, max, effective is greater than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is set to one to signal all of the access terminals that are power controlled by the sector that it is necessary to lower their data rates to control interference among the mutual access terminals. If the value Nt, max, effective is less than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is not set, that is, set to zero to indicate all the access terminals that are power controlled in the sector that are not required to reduce the data rate to control interference among the access terminals. In one embodiment, the ratio of the maximum effective noise power spectral density to the power spectral density of the thermal noise (Nt, max, effective / N0) is compared with a predetermined threshold to determine whether to establish a reverse activity bit RAB or not.
In one embodiment, takes into consideration only those access terminals which include the given sector of the base station in their active sets, as potentially relevant access terminals which may contribute significantly to the sector load. The filtered ratio of pilot chip energy to the effective signal-noise power spectral density (Ecp / Nt), relating to an antenna for each access terminal under consideration is computed in a manner well known to those skilled in the art.
Alternatively, the determination of whether an access terminal contributes a significant load to the sector may be based on the fact whether the set tracking data request channel (DRCLock) of the access terminal or not. If the DRCLock of the access terminal is not set, the access terminal may be deemed irrelevant to the sector loading and therefore ignored in the determination of whether or not to establish RAB.
In another embodiment, the determination of whether an access terminal contributes a significant load to the sector may be based on a comparison of the filtered path loss reverse link from an access terminal to a base station with a threshold. If the filtered path loss above the predetermined threshold, the access terminal may be deemed irrelevant to the sector loading and therefore ignored in the determination of whether or not to establish RAB.
In one embodiment, the upper threshold coefficient (ROT) over-thermal (I0 / N0) defined for the sector, to avoid overloading the neighboring sectors. If the ratio ROT greater than a predetermined threshold, the RAB is set to one to signal all of the access terminals that are power controlled in the sector, it is necessary to lower their data rates regardless of whether the parameter Nt, max, effective / N0 enough large to initiate installation RAB.
In one embodiment, if only one access terminal that is power controlled, is active in the sector, the RAB is not set or is set to zero, so that the access terminal need not reduce its data rate, if the ratio ROT below a predetermined threshold, to to avoid overloading the neighboring sectors.
Various embodiments of the apparatus and method according to the present invention may be implemented in CDMA communication systems as alternatives to the conventional scheme based on the RAB setup ROT ratio, load control, with minimal additional complexity. The gain bandwidth for the data in each sector of a base station can be realized under exclusion of interference between the access terminals.
