A dispenser
Abstract
A dispenser (1) for dispensing a metered volume of a fluid product has a storage chamber (9) for storing the fluid product in; an outlet orifice (21) through which the fluid product is dispensable from the dispenser; and a dispensing mechanism adapted in use to dispense a metered volume of the fluid product from the storage chamber through the outlet orifice. The dispensing mechanism has a metering chamber (19) which is adapted in use to provide the metered volume of the fluid product for discharge through the outlet orifice. The metering chamber is movable between a first volumetric state, in which the metering chamber has a first volume greater than the metered volume and is in fluid communication with the storage chamber such that, in use, an excess volume of the fluid product consisting of the metered volume and a surplus volume is transferable to the metering chamber from the storage chamber, and a second volumetric state, in which the metering chamber has a second volume less than the first volume and no less than the metered volume and is isolated from the storage chamber such that, in use, the metered volume of the fluid product is contained in the metering chamber ready for dispensing through the outlet orifice. The dispensing mechanism further has a bleed arrangement (11, 20) adapted in use to bleed the surplus volume of the fluid product from the metering chamber as its moves from the first volumetric state to the second volumetric state.

DESCRIPTION
DISTRIBUTION DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a dispensing device for dispensing a metered volume of a fluid product and is particularly, but not exclusively, related to a dispensing device for dispensing a metered volume of a fluid medicament, for example, medicines having liquid, gaseous, powdered or topical formulations (cream, paste etc.). The invention also has application in the area of health services.
Background of the Invention
Fluid product dispensing devices having dosage mechanisms are known in the art. By way of example, in the medical field, the use of metered dose inhalers (MDI) is well established. In an MDI, the fluid product is contained under pressure in a can having an open end, closed by a valve mechanism. 0 The valve mechanism has a valve body which defines a fixed volume dosing chamber through which a valve stem is sealably slidable between the fill and discharge positions. In the filling position, the valve stem places the dosing chamber in fluid communication with the can contents, but isolates the dosing chamber from the external environment. Conversely, when the valve stem moves to the discharge position, the dosing chamber is placed in fluid communication with the external environment but isolated from the can contents. Thus, a metered volume of fluid product is sequentially transferred to the dosing chamber and then discharged to the external environment for inhalation by a patient.
DE-A-10017438 discloses various embodiments of a cream dispensing device having a dispensing device head mounted on a container unit such that its axes are orthogonally oriented. The container unit defines an inner chamber containing the cream for dispensing. A channel fluidly connects the inner container chamber to a pumping chamber defined in the dispensing head. In the dispensing head there is a piston which is sealably slidable along the dispensing head axis for reciprocating movement in the pumping chamber. A discharge valve is positioned at an outlet of the pumping chamber. In operation, the user pushes the plunger into the pumping chamber to pump cream into the pumping chamber out of the dispensing device through the discharge valve.
A metering pump is disclosed in WO-A-02/068317, which is state of the art only in accordance with Article 54 (3) EPC.
The present invention provides a dispensing device for a fluid product having a novel dispensing mechanism.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided an intranasal delivery device for dispensing a metered volume of a fluid product according to claim 1.
Preferred features of the invention are defined in the attached subordinate claims as well as in the exemplary embodiment to be described hereinafter.
Brief Description of the Drawings

FIGURE 1 shows the dispensing device in a sleep mode;
FIGURE 2 shows the dispensing device in a filler operating mode; and
FIGURES 3 to 5 show the multistage dispensing device of a dispensing operation mode.
Description of Exemplary Embodiment of
Invention
In the FIGURES, a portable and manual dispensing device 1 according to the present invention is shown. The dispensing device 1 is a drug dispensing device, herein an intranasal dispensing device.
The dispensing device 1 has a housing 2 housing a container element 3 comprising a tubular body 5 into which an end wall 7 is sealably slidable. The inner surfaces of the tubular body 5 and end wall 7 define a storage chamber 9 in which the fluid product 10 to be delivered, a medicament, is contained. The tubular body 5 has a hole 11 at its opposite end to that receiving the sliding end wall 7.
The dispensing device 1 further comprises a metering member 13 having a tubular body 15 and an end wall 17 which is sealably slidable on the tubular body 15. As can be seen from FIG. 2, for example, a metering chamber 19 is defined between the inner surfaces of the tubular body 15 and the end wall 17. As will be described in more detail hereinafter, the function of the metering chamber 19 is to provide a metered volume of the fluid product 10 for delivery to the dispensing device 1.
On one side of the tubular body 15 of the metering element 13 there is an orifice 20 aligned with the orifice 11 of the container element 3, thereby placing the storage and dosing chambers 9, 19 in fluid communication with each other by that fluid product 10 may be transferred from storage chamber 9 to dosage chamber 19 for subsequent discharge of dispensing device 1.
The metering chamber 19 communicates with an outlet port 21 of a spray nozzle 23, which is profiled and sized for insertion into a user nostril. The tubular body 15 of the metering element 13 includes an extension 25 through which a narrow channel 27 extends to connect the outlet port 21 to the metering chamber 19. The channel 27 has a branched end 29 to form an annular discharge hole 31 in the discharge hole 21. 0 Sprinkler nozzle 23 further includes a skirt member 33 mounted on the tubular body 15 about extension 25 which acts to point the sprinkler flow discharged through the annular discharge port 31.
The end wall 17 of the metering element 13 forms the head of a spring-loaded piston element 35 of a hand-actuating mechanism of the dispensing device 1. Piston member 35 further has an arm 37 in which a spring 44 actuates to push the piston member 35 to the rest or return position shown in FIGURE 1. 0 arm 37 is operatively connected to a trigger member 39 of the drive mechanism, the trigger member 39 having a handle or button 40 for a dispenser 1 user to grasp with one hand, or to press with a finger or thumb to drive the drive mechanism. The firing member 39 is mounted for sliding movement on the dispensing device 1 in a direction transverse to the sliding movement direction of the piston member 35. In this connection, the dispensing device 1 has guides 36 for guiding the sliding movement of the triggering element 39. In addition, the triggering member 39 is spring-loaded, with a spring 38 pushing the triggering member 39 to its extended position shown in FIGURE 1.
As will be understood from FIG. 2, the firing member 39 has an eccentric surface 41 which, when the firing member 39 moves inwardly (arrow A), acts on a cam follower 42 provided on the arm 37 of the firing member 35. to move the piston member 35 backwards (arrow B) to a ready position as shown. This is the filling mode of the dispensing device 1, in that the rearward movement of the piston member 35 causes a pressure difference between the metering chamber 19 and the storage chamber 9 which forces the end wall 7 of the container element 3 to be moved inward (arrow C), thereby pushing fluid product 10 from storage chamber 9 into metering chamber 19 for filling.
A non-return valve 43 is mounted in the discharge port 21 around the extension 25 of the tubular body 15 of the metering member 13. Non-return valve 43 is in the form of a sleeve member. The negative pressure created in the metering chamber 19 as the plunger member 35 is withdrawn from the rest position shown in Figure 1 causes valve 43 to be pushed into a closed position at which the annular discharge port 31 seals.
Referring to FIGURES 3 to 5, after the dispensing device 1 has been prepared by moving inwardly of the firing member 39 causing the piston member 35 to be retracted to the later readiness position and compression of the springs 38 44, the dispensing device 1 may be actuated by releasing the inward force exerted on the firing member 39. This releases the load of the spring 38 allowing it to drive the firing member 39 outward (arrow D) after which the piston member 35 is no longer secured by the firing member 39 and is propelled forward by the spring member 44 (arrow E). This is the discharge mode of the dispensing device 1.
The initial phase or phase of the discharge mode is shown in FIGURE 3. In this initial phase, the forward movement of the plunger member 35 pushes excess fluid product 10 received in the metering chamber 19 in the fill mode again inwards. from the storage chamber 9 through the communication holes 11, 20. In this way, the flow of the excess fluid product is facilitated by sliding outward movement of the end wall 7 of the container element 3 (arrow F) in response to the pressure increase in the storage chamber 9 when the excess fluid product is received therein. .
As will be understood from FIG. 4, as the plunger member 35 slides forward, it reaches an intermediate position in which the plunger head 17 closes bore 20, thereby sealing the metering chamber 19 with respect to to storage chamber 9. The end wall 7 of the container element 3 is adapted to move outwardly at a lower pressure than valve 43, thereby ensuring that during movement of the piston member 35 from its most later readiness position to intermediate, the excess fluid product is transferred back to the storage chamber 9 without being discharged through the discharge port 21.
In the intermediate position, in the delivery mode of the dispensing device 1 shown in FIGURE 4, the metering chamber 19 defines a predetermined volume filled with fluid product 10.
This is the metered volume of fluid product to be delivered by the dispensing device 1.
As shown in FIGURE 5, forward movement of piston member 35 causes valve opening 43 to discharge the metered volume of fluid product from annular discharge port 31 of discharge port 21. The narrow dimensions of the channel 27 and annular discharge port 31 force the discharged fluid product to take the form of a spray flow if liquid is being dispensed.
After the spring member 44 has returned the piston member 35 to its earliest resting position, the pressure thrust that had caused valve 43 to open is lowered, whereby a push inherent in valve material 43 places it. again in its closed position over the annular discharge hole 31.
As shown in FIGURES 1 and 5, the plunger head 17 has a front face 51 which sealingly closes the channel 27 to the discharge port 21 when the plunger member 35 is in the rest position. Further, in this embodiment, the front face 51 has a shape complementary to that of the front section 53 of the metering chamber 19 into which the channel 27 flows. In other words, the front face 51 sealingly engages with the front section 53.
As will be seen from FIG. 4, the piston head 17 has a thickness t such that it keeps the hole 20 in a closed state as it moves from the intermediate to the most advanced position. Thus, fluid product 10 in storage chamber 9 cannot be transferred behind plunger member 35, nor can fluid product 10 flow back from dosing chamber 19 to storage chamber 9.
Therefore it will be understood that a watertight system is obtained as the storage chamber 9 is sealed to the external environment around the dispensing device 1.
After the dosed volume has been delivered, device 1

If the piston member 35 has passed the intermediate position in its receding path, the orifice 20 is opened, whereby the fluid product 10 may be transferred from the storage chamber 9 to the dosing chamber 19 in the manner previously described for preparing the dispensing of the fluid. another metered volume of the fluid product. After each actuation cycle, the volume of the storage chamber 9 decreases in proportion to the decrease in fluid product volume, ie by the dosed volume. This is because, during the initial phase of a discharge mode, the end wall 7 of the container element 3 is again pushed closer to the hole 11 than the beginning of the fill mode.
The dispensing device 1 provides high dosing accuracy from a watertight system that protects the fluid product 10 from contamination by the external environment. For example, non-return valve 43 prevents air from entering. In addition, the storage chamber 9 is isolated from the discharge port 21 during rest, fill and discharge modes, initially by valve 43, then at the end by piston head 17. Accordingly, the fluid product 10 may be free of preservatives, which is particularly beneficial when the fluid product is a medicament.
The dispensing device 1 further distributes without the need for an immersion tube and has no backflow.
