Ceramic body of partially stabilized zirconium dioxide and method of making same

Abstract

The present invention relates to ceramic bodies suitable for use in high temperature applications, such as filters for molten metal, and as kiln furniture. The ceramic bodies are formed by partially stabilized zirconia and are characterized by the presence of about 12 to 80 wt .-% zirconia in a monoclinic phase and the balance of substantially a cubic phase at room temperature. The ceramic bodies have an excellent combination of physical properties, which enclose a high temperature strength and thermal shock resistance. The invention also concerns the method for preparing the ceramic body and the thixotropic ceramic slurry which is used for it.
