Abstract
1468092 Recovering fatty substances APOTHEKERNES LABORATORIUM FOR SPECIAL-PRAEPARATER AS 6 Aug 1974 [28 Jan 1974] 34670/74 Addition to 1468091 Heading C5C Fatty substances are recovered from aqueous effluents as described in the parent Specification but in addition the stabilized sludge containing the stabilized fatty substance or degradation product thereof is acidified so that it separates into an upper concentrated fatty sludge phase and a lower aqueous phase. The acids used may be hydrochloric acid or soap stock (as defined). The upper fatty sludge phase is separated from the aqueous phase and the former is heated to form an upper phase containing technical fatty acid and a lower aqueous phase containing the precipitation chemicals used to precipitate the original stabilized aqueous fatty sludge, these two phases then being separated.

Author of the invention: Patent holder: A / S Apothekernes Laboratorium for Specialpraeparater, Oslo, (Norway)
Method for recovering and stabilizing fats, fat products, proteins, protein products and / or their breakdown products from waste water or sewage and
The subject of the main patent No. 107 854 is a method of recovering and stabilizing fats, products of the type of fat, proteins, products of the type of proteins and / or products of their decomposition from used water or wastewater by treatment 5 at least one acid hydrolyzing metal salt, introduced in an amount sufficient to form a complex with the above-mentioned organic substances in the wastewater, with the possible addition of mineral acid 10% for lowering the pH value to 5 or below and precipitating the resulting complex by alkalizing the solution to a pH value above 6, as well as the possible introduction of alkaline earth metal ions after alkalizing, during alkalizing or with the introduction of a hydrolyzing salt, as well as the possible introduction of a cationic polyectrolyte before alkalizing the solution or anionic polyectrolyte after alkalizing the solution and isolating the precipitated 20 sludge in the form of sludge by known methods such as sedimentation, spinning or flotation or expansion under pressure of air dissolved in water.
This known method allows easy and accurate purification of waste water and far-reaching recovery of valuable substances contained in the treated industrial water or wastewater, which exceeds the previously known methods of precipitation or flocculation of said substances, because the resulting slurry of fatty substances is more concentrated and the recovered substances have more stability.
The aforementioned known method of purifying industrial wastewater and drinking water has the disadvantage that the sludge obtained in this way, although it reaches a concentration of recovered substances up to 15%, contains more than the desired amount of water, as well as an auxiliary agent used for precipitation.
The object of the invention was to remove this disadvantage and to improve the method in such a way that more water contained in it could be removed from the sludge without additional expenditure, with possible recovery of the chemicals used, and obtaining a slurry concentrate with high stability of fatty and protein substances contained in it.
It is known that compounds of the complex type can be decomposed by acidification, as well as coagulated in this way protein substances included in this type of complex, which is, among others, sludge obtained by the above-known known method of wastewater treatment. However, it is also known that the decomposition of such sludges with concentrated mineral acid leads to the formation of compounds with strong foaming properties hindering the process, and it is also known that metal salts used for
113 It is important for the production of this type of sludge to catalyze the auto-oxidation of fats, resulting in an increase in the content of ketones, peroxides and aldehydes, which leads to a significant reduction in the value of fat and protein substances recovered in this way. Thus * the simple decomposition of the complex compound due to acidification should lead to a significant reduction in the stability of the recovered fat and protein mixture, as well as the formation of foaming agents, and it could not be expected that in this way, without introducing additional processes, it would be possible to obtain a muddy sludge with significantly lower water content. '. * 'Surprisingly, it was found that the sludge containing fatty substances obtained by the process of main patent No. 107 854 can be dehydrated and significantly concentrated if treated with an acid solution. After this treatment, the fat-containing part of the slurry becomes insoluble, with the mixture delaminated in such a way that the bottom phase consists entirely of water and the top phase is a dehydrated slime or a relatively slurry phasek the centrate, which slurry can then be easily separated. :
It should also be noted that the proteins contained in this sludge (also in the form of a complex) are coagulated as a result of the cleavage of the complex and are separated in the form of a suspension phase below the fatty acid layer, so that they can easily be separated from the fatty acid layer.
It has also surprisingly been found that the precipitation agent contained in the sludge can optionally be recovered if the slurry concentrate together with the liquid aqueous phase, and more preferably the concentrate itself, is subjected to heating, in particular to temperatures; / boiling, whereby a two-phase system in which the upper phase is again formed is the phase containing mainly fatty acids, hereinafter referred to as the fatty acid phase, and the lower bed - the aqueous phase, hereinafter referred to as the second aqueous liquid phase, which contains a precipitation agent and which can be recycled to the sludge precipitation cycle.
According to the invention, a method of recovering and stabilizing fats, products of the type of fat, proteins, products of the type of protein and / or their decomposition products from sludge obtained, in the process of purifying used water or industrial wastewater, according to the main patent No. 107 854, with possible recovery of used chemicals is that that fat-containing sludge is acidified with a concentrated solution of 'mineral acid' or a highly acidic effluent obtained from the decomposition of soaps derived from alkaline refining of fats, preferably to a pH lower than 2 to obtain a two-phase system consisting of a lower aqueous liquid phase and a floating solid phase, being a concentrate of fatty substances in the form of sludge, whereupon the concentrate is separated and / or, if appropriate, the concentrate itself or / and together with the aqueous liquid phase is heated and boiled until it is separated again and a two-phase system is obtained, in which the lower phase contains a precipitation agent and the upper phase consists of fatty acids in the technical form product.
The method according to the invention is characterized by the advantage that it allows outstanding thickening of the slurry concentrate and as e.g. visible from the following Table II from a slurry of e.g. 250 ml volume allows to obtain a slurry concentrate of about 14 ml volume, from which after heating (Table III ) about 8 ml of aqueous fatty acids are obtained. ·
In addition, the advantage of the slurry concentrates obtained by the process of the invention is their high stability and resistance to auto-oxidation during storage and cleavage compared to the less stable, i.e. very easily cleavable action of acids and easily self-oxidizing known complexes of fat with precipitants such as e.g. Fe (OH)3-fat.
A further advantage of the method according to the invention is the possibility of obtaining precipitated products containing up to 90% by weight of protein and up to 95% of fats present in wastewater compared to previous methods, which allowed obtaining precipitated products containing only about 78-85.5% by weight of precipitated proteins in a separate additional process.
An additional advantage of the method according to the invention is the abovementioned possibility of recovering the reagents used for fat precipitation, as well as the non-formation of foaming agents, which in principle arise from the previously known fat recovery method used,
In the process according to the invention, the dehydration of sludge containing fatty acid-type substances uses, in particular, acidic waste water resulting from the process of splitting soaps, so-called "soap stock", i.e. soaps separated at the bottom of the reactor, during deacidification of fats, and obtained in alkaline processes refining or purifying fats. Mineral acid, especially hydrochloric acid, is also used. Then the precipitation of gypsum is unpleasant, especially during the discussed process of heating the clay concentrate and keeping it boiling.
The invention 'explains the following examples.
Example 1. Sludge produced on an industrial scale was used for the pilot tests to recover and stabilize fats and fatty substances from the industrial wastewater of a fat refinery of a margarine factory by chemical precipitation with ferric chloride, calcium chloride and calcium hydroxide.
The following tests were carried out:
1.1. 150 ml of sludge was heated on a hot plate until it started to boil, which led to
113 547 slight sludge stratification, disappearing on mixing.
1.2. 150 ml of slurry, concentrated sulfuric acid, was added dropwise with stirring until a rapid slurry separation into two phases was obtained. After adding
2.5 ml concentrated sulfuric acid, the pH was 1.5. κ
A floating, concentrated sludge phase, characterized by porosity and light fluidity, was collected with a spoon.
The sludge obtained in this test was designated as "sludge concentrate 1.2." The liquid phase was filtered off and the liquid obtained in this test was designated as "liquid phase 1.2".
1.3. To 150 ml of sludge, 3 ml - Concentrated sulfuric acid was added dropwise with stirring. At a pH of 1.2 /, the slurry quickly separated into two phases.
The liquid or floating concentrated sludge phase was more tight and only took up a volume of 25 ml. The liquid phase was slightly turbid. The whole mixture was heated, the slime layer formed darkened and concentrated to a volume of about 10 ml, and large, clear gypsum flocs formed in the liquid phase, which then fell to the bottom of the vessel.
When heating to a boil - from the phases sludge. as a result, fatty acids formed in the form of dark-colored drops floating on the surface of the liquid, while the resulting liquid phase had a yellow color due to iron ions. The fat droplets clustering together to form a uniform layer were collected and marked with the name "fatty acid phase 1.3".
1.4. In order to avoid gypsum precipitation, 150 ml of sludge was treated with 7 ml of concentrated nitric acid, which caused the formation of a spongy, undissoluble concentrated sludge phase. The sample taken from the obtained concentrated slurry phase was designated as "slurry concentrate 1.4."
1.5. 150 ml of sludge, with vigorous stirring, were quickly quenched with 3 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid, which caused rapid separation of a compact 20 ml slurry concentrate, characterized by good fluidity and buoyancy.
The obtained results of the discussed studies are summarized in the following Table I.
Liquid phases obtained from tests 1.2. and 1.3. they differ in dependence on the intensely yellow color of the liquid phase 1.3. sludge sample separated as a result of cooking. After neutralizing both samples with ammonia and from sample 1.3. a strongly brownish strontium is obtained whereas from sample 1.2. a small amount of almost white strontium is obtained.
The rhodium reaction carried out with dissolved strontium clearly shows that the liquid phase 1.3. contains a large amount of iron while in contrast the liquid phase 1.2. has negligible iron content.
From the above data it is clear that the medium can be recovered by heating the sludge
2 precipitation, the slime is split into free fatty acids that float to the surface, and the agent (cation) used to precipitate the slime complex is dissolved in the liquid phase.
Example II Flotation sludge containing fatty substances recovered from the industrial wastewater of the margarine plant by precipitation and stabilization was used for the tests3A1 nio A12(SO4)3, CaCl2 and NaOH.
Sludge containing fatty substances was treated with hydrochloric acid to a pH of 1.6, which resulted in the splitting of the sludge into two phases, the upper of which was the concentrated slurry phase or the slurry concentrate phase, and the lower the liquid of the total. The volumes of both phases were measured and analytically determined for fatty acids.
The obtained results are given in Table II below.
Example III. Flotation sludge containing fatty substances was used for the treatment. This sludge was obtained in a known manner from the industrial wastewater of the margarine plant by treatment with aluminum sulfate and then neutralized with calcium hydroxide at pH 7.5.
