Smart substation management

Abstract

598024 Disclosed is a substation system (200). The system (200) includes a plurality of substation devices including at least one primary intelligent electronic device (IED) (210). Each primary IED (210) has a respective configuration file (270). The system (200) also includes communications arrangements (240, 250) enabling communication by at least one of the plurality of substation devices, including enabling communication by at least one primary IED (210). The system (200) further includes at least one backup configuration file (280) for each configuration file (270). The backup configuration file (280) is stored on a backup IED (290). In response to a primary IED (210) ceasing to be in an active state, at least one of the plurality of substation devices activates the backup IED (290) with the backup configuration file (280) corresponding to the inactive primary IED (210). The backup IED (290) to activate is selected as the one having stored thereon a backup configuration file (280) corresponding primary IED (210) that ceases to be in an active state.

  1. 1
The claims defining the invention are as follows:1. A substation system comprising: a plurality of substation devices including at least one primary intelligent electronic 5 device (IED), each primary IED having a respective configuration file;a communications arrangement enabling communication by at least one of the plurality of substation devices, including enabling communication by at least one primary IED;at least one backup configuration file for each configuration file, said at least one backup configuration file being stored on a backup IED;and 10 wherein, responsive to a primary IED ceasing to be in an active state, at least one of the plurality of substation devices activates the backup IED, wherein said backup IED is selected as that backup IED having stored thereon a backup configuration file corresponding to the primary IED ceasing to be in an active state. 15
  2. 4
The substation system of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein each of said at least one backup configuration files is assigned to a particular backup IED. 25
  3. 5
The substation system of any one of claims 1 to , wherein each primary IED sends a status over the communications arrangement.
  4. 6
A substation management method, the method comprising:for each of at least one primary intelligent electronic device (IED): 30 acquiring a respective configuration file, and creating a respective backup configuration file, said backup configuration file being copied to each of at least one backup IED;monitoring the at least one primary IED;and responsive to a primary IED ceasing to be in an active state, activating a selected one of said at least one backup IED, wherein said selected one of said at least one backup IED is determined as that back up IED having a corresponding backup configuration file stored thereon such that the selected backup IED takes over for the primary IED with changed state.
  5. 12
A computer product for managing a substation including at least one primary 25 intelligent electronic device (IED), the computer product comprising instructions in the form of computer executable program code stored on a computer readable storage medium and including:program code for monitoring a status of each of at least one primary IED in the substation, the status including at least an active state and an inactive state;30 program code for creating a backup configuration file for each primary IED and storing said created backup configuration file on at least one backup IED;and program code for activating one of said at least one backup IED, wherein said activated at least one backup IED is that backup IED having stored thereon a backup configuration file corresponding to a primary IED indicated to be not in the active state.
  6. 19
A substation system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one 30 of the embodiments as shown in Figures 2 and 3. 19. A computer program substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the embodiment as shown in Figure 4. 1/4
