Processing biomass

Abstract

596142 Disclosed is a method of treating comminuted biomass comprising cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, starch and mixtures thereof with electron beam radiation at less than 10 Mrad to increase nutrient availability. Also disclosed is further treatment with microorganisms/enzymes and products of the disclosed method and combinations thereof with other products.

  1. 1
WE CLAIM:1. A method comprising: treating a comminuted biomass material comprising polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, starch, and mixtures thereof with electron beam radiation at less than 10 Mrad to increase the nutrient availability of the biomass material.
  2. 5
The method of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the biomass comprises a crop residue.
  3. 6
The method of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the biomass includes a genetically modified plant material.
  4. 8
The method of any one of claims 1 to 7, further comprising deriving from the biomass an edible material selected from the group consisting of proteins, fats, vitamins, oils, fiber, minerals, sugars, carbohydrates and alcohol.
  5. 9
The method of any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein irradiating comprises exposing the biomass material to more than one electron beam device.
  6. 10
The method of any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising subjecting the processed material to enzymatic hydrolysis. 7623353 231
  7. 11
The method of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising combining the treated material with an enzyme.
  8. 13
The method of any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein comminuting comprises shearing, cutting, crushing, smashing, or grinding.
  9. 15
The method of any one of claims 1 to 14 further comprising densifying the biomass material.
  10. 16
The method of any one of claims 1 to 15 wherein the dosage of radiation is at least 1 Mrad.
  11. 17
The method of any one of claims 1 to 16 further comprising incorporating the treated material into a urea molasses mineral block (UMMB).
  12. 18
The method of any one of claims 1 to 17 further comprising combining the treated material with an additive selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, flavoring, brewers oats, by-products of drug manufacture, minerals and trace minerals, proteinated minerals, vitamins, direct fed organisms/probiotics, prebiotics, flavors, enzymes, acetic acid, sulfuric acid, aluminum salts, dextrans, glycerin, beeswax, sorbitol, riboflavin, preservatives, nutraceuticals, amino acids, by pass protein, urea, molasses, fatty acids, metabolic modifiers, and mixtures thereof.
  13. 19
A product comprising a treated material produced by treating a comminuted biomass material comprising polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, starch, and mixtures thereof with electron beam radiation at less than 10 Mrad to increase the nutrient availability of the biomass material.
  14. 24
A method comprising:treating a comminuted biomass material comprising polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, starch, and mixtures thereof with electron beam radiation at less than 10 Mrad to increase the nutrient availability of the biomass material, said method substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the Examples and/or any one of the accompanying drawings.
  15. 25
A product comprising a treated material produced by treating a comminuted biomass material comprising polysaccharides selected from the group consisting of cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, starch, and mixtures thereof with electron beam radiation at less than 10 Mrad to increase the nutrient availability of the biomass material, said product substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the Examples and/or any one of the accompanying drawings.
