Method for transmission power control based on evaluation of a reverse activity bit and data flow specific upward/downward ramping functions, and corresponding wireless access terminal

Abstract

A method of transmitting a packet is provided. The method includes the steps of selecting a payload size from a payload profile, identifying a power level associated with the selected payload size for a transmission mode of the packet, determining whether transmission conditions are satisfied and selecting a different payload size if the conditions are not satisfied. A method of obtaining current power allocation for flows on an access terminal by setting a power allocation is also disclosed, as well as a wireless access terminal able to transmit a packet as described above, and other apparatus for performing the methods as provided.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:1. A method of transmitting a packet, characterized by: a) selecting a payload size from a payload profile;b) identifying a power level associated with the selected payload size for a transmission mode of the packet;c) determining whether transmission conditions are satisfied if said packet is transmitted with selected payload size and said power level;d) transmitting said packet if said transmission conditions are satisfied;and e) selecting a different payload size and returning to step b if said transmission conditions are not satisfied.
  2. 5
A method of obtaining current power allocation for flows on an access terminal, characterized by:receiving a grant message having at least one current power allocation grant from a scheduler;and setting a current power allocation for a corresponding flow equal to said at least one current power allocation grant in said grant message.
  3. 11
A method of obtaining current power allocation for flows on an access terminal, characterized by:determining whether a current power allocation grant for a flow has been received from an access node;and autonomously determining the current power allocation for the flow if the current power allocation grant for a flow has not been received from an access node.
  4. 16
An access terminal that is configured for wireless communication with an access network within a sector, comprising:a transmitter for transmitting a reverse traffic channel to the access network;an antenna for receiving signals from the access network;a processor;memory in electronic communication with the processor;and instructions to transmit a packet stored in the memory, characterized by: a) selecting a payload size from a payload profile;b) identifying a power level associated with the selected payload size for a transmission mode of the packet;c) determining whether transmission conditions are satisfied if said packet is transmitted with the selected payload size and said power level;d) transmitting said packet if said transmission conditions are satisfied;and e) selecting a different payload size and returning to instruction b if said transmission conditions are not satisfied.
