Abstract

A branched alcohol composition comprising a branched ether primary alcohol represented by the formula (I); and alkyl ether sulphate, alcohol alkoxysulphate and alkanol alkoxylate derivatives thereof, which are useful in detergent compositions are disclosed, wherein: R1 represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R2 represents a alkyl radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms; x is a number ranging from 3 to 16; wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the alcohol ranges from 9 to 24.

    WHAT WE CLAIM IS:1. A branched alcohol composition comprising a branched ether primary alcohol represented by the formula: wherein Ri represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 represents an alkyl radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and x is a number ranging from 3 to 16, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the alcohol ranges from 9 to 24.

    An alkyl ether sulphate composition comprising an alkyl ether sulphate represented by the formula:XOSO3M, wherein M is hydrogen or a cation, and X is represented by the formula wherein Ri represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 represents an alkyl radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, and x is a number ranging from 3 to 16, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the alkyl ether sulphate ranges from 9 to 24 .

    An alcohol alkoxysulphate composition comprising an alcohol alkoxysulphate represented by the formula:INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE OF N.Z. 27 CCT zca CH Ri R2 FchVch—o— □ ι /X CH—CH—CH2—O-^AO^-SO3M wherein Rx represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 represents an alkyl radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, x is a number ranging from 3 to 16, A is an alkylene radical having carbon number in the range of 2 to 4, y is a number ranging from 1 to 9, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the alcohol alkoxysulphate excluding A ranges from 9 to 24, and M is hydrogen or a cation.

The composition of claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein R2 is an alkyl radical having 1 carbon atom.

A process to produce the branched alcohol composition of any one of claims 1, 5, 6 and 7 comprising:contacting an olefin having an average carbon number in the range of 3 to 18 with 1,3-propane diol in the presence of a catalyst effective to react the olefin with the diol under conditions effective to produce the branched alcohol composition.

A process to produce the branched alkyl ether sulphate composition of any one of claims 2, 5, 6 and 7 comprising:a) contacting an olefin having an average carbon number in the range of 3 to 18 with 1,3-propane diol in the presence of a catalyst effective to react the olefin with the diol thereby producing a branched alcohol composition;and b) contacting the branched alcohol composition with a sulphating agent under conditions effective to produce a branched alkyl ether sulphate composition.
