A method of registering a portable device for use in a communication system is described. The system includes a network controller, which has a database for storing the identification number of the portable device. The system further comprises a base station and a portable unit, with a subscriber communicating to the network controller a first information set comprising qualified subscriber information, the portable identification number and a key code which has been entered into the portable unit (100) and wherein the subscriber has entered a joint wireless registration number in the memory of the portable device (102).
