High arachidonic acid producing strains of yarrowia lipolytica

Abstract

Engineered strains of the oily yeast Yarrowia lipolytica are capable of producing more than 25% eicosaspentaenoic acid (EPA), a (? -3 polyunsaturated fatty acid) in the total oil fraction described. These strains include various chimeric genes expressing heterologous desaturases, elongases, and acyltransferases, and optionally include various native desaturase and acyltransferase knockouts to enable synthesis and high EPA accumulation. Production host cells are required, as are methods for producing EPA with said host cell.
