Vial adapter having a needle-free valve for use with vial closures of different sizes having a set of rigid claws

A medicine bottle adapter that has a needle-free valve, a pointed needle that is used to perforate a medicine bottle's rubber stopper, and a circular arrangement of hooks of different lengths to grip medicine bottle closures with different diameters. The arrangement of hooks includes a first set of hooks each having a first length extending inwardly from the circumference of the housing of the adapter, and a second set of hooks alternating with the first set of hooks, each having a longer length. The second set of hooks is mounted so that they bend and deform plastically out of the way in the case where the adapter engages a medicine bottle that exceeds a predetermined size. The housing includes a cover that is at least as far as the pointed needle to protect medical personnel using the adapter from accidental punctures. The needle-free valve includes an elastically deformable piston member with a naturally open bore. The interior of the piston provides a fluid flow passage through the adapter. In one embodiment, the first set of hooks in the adapter can be used together with a medicine bottle closure with a diameter of approx. 20 mm, and the second set of hooks can be used together with a medicine bottle closure with a diameter of approx. 13 to 17 mm.
