In-vivo determining the effects of a pharmaceutical on blood parameters

Abstract

Blood Viscosity Measurement System and a method that monitors the rising peak of a fluid column 42 representing a living creature's blood in vivo to determine the blood viscosity over a range of shear stresses. The system includes a capillary tube 26, at least a portion of which is disposed within the vascular system 30 of a living being, and a riser 44 containing a fluid is coupled to a capillary tube. A sensor 48, 50 and associated microprocessor 52 is provided to determine the change in height of the fluid in the riser 44 at multiple points along the length of the tube from which the viscosity is calculated. The system can be used to determine the deformability of red blood cells in the blood of a living being and / or the thixotropic properties of a living creature's blood.
