Ethernet switch in a terminal for a wireless metropolitan area network

Abstract

Transfer of Ethernet data packets via terminals (100, 100 ') for big-city network for wireless communication. Terminals have a network switch (600) with a first port for receiving data packets from a computer network and a second port for forwarding these data packets. Buffer layers (252) coupled to the switch (600) and a transmitter / receiver (246) connected to these latches handle the forwarding of the data packets via the communication path (102). The data packets can be in the category Fast Ethernet, and the first port can handle 100 Mb / s. The terminals (100, 100 ') may include a packet buffer (602) for storing the data packets before they are stored in the buffer stores (252). The switch (600) may be a switch for the standard layer two. It can store the data packets in the packet buffer (602) in response to the available space in the buffer store (252), in response to rain or interference failure in the communication path (102) or in response to the recorded transmission error rate. The terminals (100, 100 ') may include an expansion device (106) which may constitute a peak unit and are connected to a broadcast device which may constitute an output unit (104), to receive the data packets from the computer network and to transmit them to the outdoor unit.
