An embolic protection device

Abstract

There is disclosed an embolic protection device having a collapsible filter element (105) mounted on a carrier such as a guide wire (101). The filter element (105) is merged into the outer end of a catheter (118) for placement and recovery through a vascular system to a patient. The filter element (105) has a collapsible filter body with a proximal inlet end and a distal outlet end. The proximal inlet end has inlet openings of a size that allow blood and embolic material to enter the filter body. The outlet end has outlet openings that allow the passage of blood but retains embolic material in the filter body. After use, catheter (118) is movable along the guide wire (101) to engage the proximal end of the filter element and close the inlet ports before sliding over the filter element from the proximal end to the distal end to progressively merge the filter body on the guide wire (101) for recovery. The filter element (105) may suitably be mounted on a tubular sleeve (104) which is slidable and rotatable on the guide wire (101), between stoppers (106, 120) spaced apart on the guide wire (101) which allow some manipulation of the guide wire regardless of the filter when the filter is in use.
