Method and device of supporting electric heating elements in a furnace insulated with ceramic fiber material. i
The invention relates to a method and device for supporting electric heating elements in an oven insulated with ceramic fiber material.
More particularly, the invention relates to a method and apparatus for the use of a ceramic fiber insulated module of unique design capable of supporting electrical resistors heating coils with a minimum probability of short circuit or heat loss.
Industrial electric furnaces, particularly those used for softening, include resistive heating elements. These elements are metal bands or wires that are serpentine or sinusoidal and usually supported on suspension members attached to the furnace wall or housing. 15
There are wide variety of known ways of constructing and insulating industrial furnaces using electric heating elements. For example, an oven can be constructed of steel and insulated internally or externally with ceramic material. Some ovens are constructed of refractory stone or have a layer of refractory within a steel body. In any case, to achieve their satisfactory thermal efficiency, industrial furnaces will, for example, be provided with some form of insulation. 25
The resistance elements used in electric ovens have a relatively short life due to burning.
9 2 2 5 A
Failure or combustion can occur due to localized heating, short circuits, thermal stresses in the heating elements, defects in the manufacture of the heating elements or a variety of other known reasons. Therefore, these heating elements need to be replaced or repaired from time to time. When replacement or repair is necessary, the oven must be cooled to allow personnel to make necessary repairs. Decommissioning an oven results in an expensive time loss for the operator of the oven and, in addition, a huge waste of fuel and energy.
In the past, it has been common practice to insulate higher temperature furnaces and the like with ceramic fiber insulation modules. These modules can take many forms. For example, an insulation module is available consisting of an insulation of resilient fiber material, wherein the fibers or faces of the fibers lie in planes that are, for example, perpendicular to the major surfaces of the module. Other modules are made of an insulating fabric of ceramic fiber material which is folded in pleats or serpentine-shaped and then slightly compressed. Still other modules are available which consist of vacuum-formed ceramic fiber material and which are relatively rigid in construction. In addition, an insulating fabric of ceramic fiber material can be used without the benefit of folding or rearranging and the like, in order to obtain satisfactory insulation properties. In any case, the term module is intended to include all these embodiments. as well as other types of oven insulation materials.
When ceramic fiber insulating modules are used to insulate an oven, these modules are usually impaled on protrusions that are welded or otherwise attached to the oven housing or wall. These protrusions serve both to hold the insulation module in place and for an anchoring device to suspend electrical resistance elements. There are other establishments

lent, with an anchor for.w'ee; heating element-r Embedded in refractory stone used to construct or insulate the interior of an oven. The interior of an oven is provided with a layer of var. Dirt-resistant stone and metal anchors are attached to the refractory stone, an electric heating coil is attached to this anchor.
Other known devices utilize ceramic panels placed inside an oven 01 such that they overlie the internal islet. Electric heating elements are then attached to the panels. 10
J
Many of the above problems are encountered in cases where it is desirable to require only the insulating material of an oven. That is, all known methods and devices for supporting electric heating element 1 are incompatible with known devices for repairing:. or replacement of insulation material.
These known support elements for a heating element require extensive dismantling with associated problems in order to facilitate replacement of the insulation. 20
In cases where it is desired to apply a thin layer of ceramic fiber material over the existing furnace refractory brick, the construction of an entirely new system for supporting electric heating coils may be necessary. Due to the high cost of restoring a system of heating coils, some furnace operators may be discouraged from repairing or replacing the insulation in their furnaces, with the result that some furnaces would be operated at very ineffective levels.
The above-mentioned problems have not been mentioned exhaustively, but are among many which adversely affect the efficiency of known systems for supporting the electric heating coils in an oven. Other important problems may also exist; however, the above problems will be sufficient to demonstrate that these known devices for supporting the heating coils in an oven are not satisfactory
750 2 2 5 4. Although known arrangements show at least a degree of utility in respect of supporting electric heating elements in an oven, there remains room for a significant improvement because the need for an improved method and apparatus 5 for supporting furnaces. The object of the invention is therefore to provide a method and device for electric heating coils in an oven provided with insulation of ceramic fiber material. the above problems being avoided as far as possible. 10
The object of the invention is in particular to provide a method and apparatus for supporting electric heating coils in an honor which does not use an anchoring mechanism mounted directly on the furnace wall,
The object of the invention is also to provide a method and apparatus for supporting electric heating coils in an oven, wherein a quick and easy replacement of electric heating coils is possible.
A further object of the invention is to provide a method and apparatus for supporting electric heating coils in an oven, which can be used in conjunction with an insulating layer of ceramic fiber material which acts as a veneer layer over an existing layer of refractory in an oven is fitted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method and apparatus for supporting electric heating coils in an oven, which will reduce the adverse effect of the heating coils, as well as the frequency of taking the oven out of operation to heat the coils repair or replace. 50
A further object of the invention is to provide a method and apparatus for supporting electric heating coils, wherein the electric modules are attached to the oven by means independent of the coil supporting device. 55

......................-............-.............. Heating element in an oven according to a preferred embodiment of the invention fulfills the above objectives and consists of an insulation module of ceramic fiber material which can be attached to a wall of an oven, an anchor member , preferably an elongated ceramic rod embedded entirely within the Insulation module and S-shaped, one end of which can be inserted through the material which comprises a surface of the module and which can cooperate with the anchor member, and of which r
another end extends outside the insulation module 10 to support an electric heating element. Ceramic spacers in the form of tan rings or elongated bars can be placed between the heating element and the insulating module to keep the element away from the hot surface of the module. 15
The method according to a preferred embodiment of the invention comprises inserting an elongated anchor member into the interior of a ceramic fiber insulation module, attaching the insulation module to an oven wall, inserting a by example S-shaped support member into a surface of the insulating module to hook a downwardly hanging end of the S-shaped support member over the elongated anchor member, and mounting the top end of the S-shaped support member outside the isolation module 25 and placing an electric heating element in the upwardly directed end of the S-shaped support member. Ceramic spacers can be fitted between the electric heating coil and the module. The elongated member or the S-shaped support member or both members 30 are preferably made of an insulating material.
Thus, examples of the important features of the invention have been enumerated, more particularly to illustrate the invention and to better accept the transfer of the prior art. It is clear that within the scope of the invention various variants are possible.

Fig. 9 shows a section of a curved wall oven according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a part of an oven 10 through which the method and device according to the invention is applied. This oven is constructed from a series of metal walls 12 that form a housing of the oven 10. This house is insulated by preference to prevent heat loss and to minimize damage to personnel after the oven. While a wide variety of materials and methods of oven insulation are available, the invention provides an insulation system located within the oven interior opposite those systems that can be fitted ΐ
on or assembled with the interior of the oven.
A preferred insulating module 14 for use in conjunction with the present invention is a front module
I insulation of heat and bralt under the name PYRO-BLOC "available from Sauder Industries", Ij., Emporia, Kansas, USA Preferably applied in the form vsfti a module will have dimensions of 0.0929 m by 0.102 cm and will consist of resilient b-camic fiber material, making the fibers or surfaces weird? the fibers are perpendicular to the walls 12 of the oven, or may be of the styve type modules manufactured (poke the vacuum forming to obtain a relatively styve, non-impressionable module. In any case, the properties are such a module such that its i
made of an electrically and thermally insulating material.
The insulating modules of ceramic fiber material or blocks can be attached to the furnace casing 12 or to a layer of refractory brick 16 (see Fig. 4) using a number of working modes. Byvocc image, the module 14 can be attached to the steel furnace housing by means of a weldable protrusion 18 inserted in the insert of the insulation module 14 (see fig. 3). A weldable metal projection 18 suitable for attaching ceramic fiber material and insulation module of the known type is described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,706,870 to Sauder et al.
(See also U.S. Pat. No. 3,999,237 to Sauder et al.) With such a device, a protrusion can be used to attach to the furnace housing 12 a stretched metal substrate 20 which is applied to the backside of the insulation module In another embodiment, an insulating module of ceramic fiber material is attached to the steel housing 12 or to a layer of refractory brick 16. At least one adhesive is available from "Sauder Industries, Ine.,
Emporia, Kansas, USA, which has the appropriate chemical, mechanical and thermal properties to achieve a reliable bond between the insulation module and the surface to which it is to be attached.
0 22 5 4
It will, of course, be clear that whatever Insulating Material is used in the interior sense of the furnace, there will be a warm surface 22 facing the interior space of the furnace and an old surface 24 adjacent to the house or the wall of the ονυι. The cold surface 24 is the surface of the insulating material attached to the housing or wall of the oven.
According to the invention, a series of S-shaped support members 26 extends; away from the hot surface 22 of the insulating module 14 to form a support for an electrical wafer heating element 28 which is usually arranged in the shape of a spine for the greatest efficiency. In order to improve the thermal properties of the heating coil 28 ', it may be desirable to maintain the heating coil at all from the hot surface 22 of the insulation module 14 · An annular spacer 50 of ceramic material and a ceramic rod 32 can be used as shown, for example, in FIGS. 2 and 5, in order to keep the heating coil a short distance from the hot surface of the insulating module.
As can be seen from the drawing, at least one anchor member 54 is placed in the interior of the insulation module 14. This member 34 is preferably a ceramic tube which may be of exactly the same type as that used as spacer 52. It would be advantageous to locate the anchor member at a distance from the wane surface 22 of the module, which distance corresponds to 25 to 50% of the thickness of the module. This anchor member 54 is preferably shorter than the width of the insulation module, in order to prevent the member from interfering with assembling or installing the insulation module 14 on the furnace wall 12. In addition, in the case of an insulation module which consists of resilient fiber material for insulation, allows for slight compression of the module during attachment to the furnace wall, which can be done without an anchor member sticking through the module by one hand. In addition, a small play must be present
7302254
I for thermally deploying the anchor member to prevent severe compression of the tip.
ΐ As in the ii ·. 2 and 3, the device according to the preferred embodiment comprises two anchor members 34 »namely a first upper anchor rod 36 and a second 1 or lower anchor rod '<8. After the module by means of a · <welded protrusion or in. adhesive to a wall: attached, the S-shaped support member 26 is applied through the warm surface 22 of the module 14. The subject! support member 26 may be made of alloy steel or other suitable material resistant to the; temperatures within the loan room. As by example from fig. 3 At one end, the support member 26 is inserted at a downwardly bent angle 40 through the fiber material forming the insulating module and anchors over the anchors embedded therein. hub 36. The support member 26 has a such meet the length that after it in bottom: the upwardly directed lite end 40 is hooked onto the anchor rod 36, a sufficient length for the hot surface 22 of the module to extend, so that an in top is provided. upwardly curved heak 42 for co-operation with an upper loop 44 of the heating element 28. The support element 26 must be of sufficient length to allow it!
; placing the spacer 3θ between the hot surface 22j of the module and the heating element 28 is possible. As noted above, this spacer 3θ is preferably an annular ceramic member; eshter could suit a variety of materials and geometries.
When the heating element supported in the center of the top loop 44 of the heating element 28,. a lower portion 46 of the heating element 28 will remain at a distance from the hot surface 22 of the module by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the spacer 3.
In cases where the heating element is supported on a • hinged wall or where it is necessary • to keep a continuous distance between the element and the warm surface. .. ........ While maintaining the insulation, it may be desirable to provide an attachment for the bottom portion 46 of the heating element. This can be done in a manner similar to that of the support provided for the top loop of the heating element.
A lower support element * 48 is inserted into the warm surface of the insulation module and penetrates through the fibrous insulation material to inter alia cooperate with the second anchor rod 5θ embedded in the module. The lower support member corresponds to the upper support element 26 so that both have loops or hooks at each end.
However, this lower support member 4θ has a 90 ° rotation between the faces of the loops formed at the opposite ends thereof. This 90 ° rotation allows engagement of the heating element 28 in a location along a vertical portion of the lower end 46. The spacer 25 may be fitted between the heating element 28 and the warm surface 22 of the insulation module on this second or bottom place. Although a spacer 50 of the type used can be used together with the top support member, it has been found to be advantageous to use a ceramic rod similar to that used as anchor member 5θ as bottom spacer 52. This ceramic rod could be placed between the heating element 28 and the hot surface 22 of the module directly over a portion 50 of the lower support member 4θ extending away from the warm surface.
In the case where an insulating module 14 of resilient ceramic fiber material is used, the support member can be inserted at any desired location along the hot surface of the module, since the fibers can be easily slid when the support member is inserted through the hot surface . This module may consist of a series of side-by-side strips that can be coupled together in a currently known manner to form a single module. It is not necessary for the support members to be inserted through the hot surface of the module

at any given place in the band with the separation v'J; a between these strips. The fact that a serpentine-shaped heating element 28 in the interior space of an oven can be supported by mounting a series of upper lower support members 26 on the test rod 36 in the module 14 · 5
Adjoining top bottom support members will be spaced corresponding to the centers of the top loops 44 of the heating coil. In cases involving an inclined wall or ceiling, the heating element 28 may be supported either at or near the top loop 44 ea by or wet, a bottom loop 32 in a manner shown in FIG. 9 · If it is clear to an expert, could it be desirable to have S-shaped support ?! organ 26 and the 9 ° turn. le support 4θ, when heating!); coils must be attached to sloping walls or 15 to the ceiling of an over. Although a module is preferably used with two anchor rods 36 and 3Θ, it will be appreciated that modules with one (for example module 14 'in FIG. 9) or three or more anchor rods according to the invention can be made and that the support elements 26 and 4θ can be of different lengths to obtain an extremely flexible system for supporting heating elements in furnaces with a wide variety of geometries. Moreover, it will be clear that the method and device according to the invention can be used for placing gas pipes or gas burners (not shown) in a gas oven (also not shown). That is, a relatively straight gas type can be supported by a series of support elements 26 according to the invention. With such an arrangement, many ryen gas burners can be easily and quickly installed 3θ.
In Figs. 4 - 7, device according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. Fig. 4 shows an insulating module 54 of ceramic fiber material which is vacutim-molded. Such a module 54 is relatively stiff and the fibers are in a somewhat brittle state. Therefore, preferably a series of notches or
0 4 cuts or slots 56, the hot surface 22 of the module 54 applied to h; insertion of a relatively flat support member 5θ do? to facilitate the hot surface to enter an anchor rod. These notches can be cut into the module either before or after the ceramic anchor rods '6 and 3' have been inserted.
In order to keep any unweathered heat transport through the notches as small as possible, it is desirable to use the relatively flat support member 58 as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.
S-shape as shown in the drawing ..s and has a sharp edge 60 at one end. The; Sharp edge 60 facilitates insertion of the support member 5θ through the insulation of ceramic fiber material, especially in the case of a rigid insulation module, this edge 60 eliminating the need for the pre-cut notch 56. Even in the case of a module with pre-cut notches 56, this sharp edge can facilitate the engagement of the support member 5θ and the anchor rod 6 or 3θ ·
As mentioned previously, the relatively rigid insulating block 54 may preferably be attached to the metal housing of an oven or to an existing layer of refractory brick with an adhesive 62. In any case, the strength of the adhesive 62 must be sufficient to accommodate the additional weight of the heating element 28, the anchor rods 36 and 3θ θη the support members 5θ.
Another embodiment of the device according to the invention comprises an insulating module 64 of ceramic fiber material made of a single mat of insulating and resilient fiber material serpentine shaped or shaped like an accordion as shown in Fig. 8. A substrate or other device (not shown) can be used to maintain the structural unit of the module thus formed.
An upper and lower ceramic anchor member 66 and 68, respectively, which may be cylindrical or U-shaped in cross section, each inserted into a fold 70 of the fiber fill, hetzy for

of the module and over the junction element 66 or 68. Either a wire-like support member 26 or 48 as shown in Fig. Or a relatively flat support member 58 as shown in Fig. (And 1) can be used.
It will, of course, be appreciated that the support members used together with the module 64 may have the loops formed at their opposite ends.
which are in the same plane, for example for an upper support member, or may have a 90 ° rotation as in the case of the lower support member 48 of FIG. 5. The use of a relatively flat support member!
of the type shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 with a rotation of 90 ° is within the scope of the invention and preferably;
The twist is formed at a point along the shaft member 74 at the location that will lie outside the module 64.
In the case of the insulating module 14 of ceramic fiber material or the module 64 consisting of resilient ceramic fiber material, it has been found that when the supporting member is passed through the hot surface 22 of a module and brought into contact with the anchor member, the ceramic; fiber material will tend to expand into; each opening occurs during the insertion of the support member. In the case of an insulating module 54 of rigid ceramic! however, when a notch 56 is provided in the material, fiber material will not expand the surrounding fiber material into thus formed notch. Therefore, it may be desirable to have a small amount of fiber material or the like in the notch
after the support 5θ has been placed. !
This would avoid any heat concentration that could arise due to a small area of reduced insulation thickness between the oven interior and the oven wall. 35
