Foldable container and bag-in-container combination and method for reusing the container
The present invention relates to a foldable container for a bag that can be filled with liquid material, which container has a folded and an unfolded condition, and is designed such that in the unfolded condition a space on the inside of the container is enclosed by a side wall thereof which is provided with a number of reinforcing elements covered with sheet-like material, which describe the circumferential shape of the side wall on the inside of the container.
Such a foldable holder is known from Turkish patent application TR 2002 01100 A2. The container disclosed therein is known in combination with a fillable bag as a bag-in-box, or bag-in-container combination, and is used in practice for the transportation of liquid products.
When filling the bag, it will take the shape of the inside of the container. The container disclosed in the above-mentioned patent application is provided with reinforcing elements which are covered at least on the inside of the container with a sheet-like material. The reinforcing elements describe an eight-sided circumferential shape on the inside of this known container. The outside of the container has a rectangular shape which is also defined by reinforcing elements.
The drawback of the known container is that after folding it out, extra operations have to be performed to provide the side wall with missing reinforcing elements at the location of the inside of the container. After using the known holder, additional operations must also be carried out in order to be able to fold the holder.
The object of the invention is to provide a foldable holder with which folding and unfolding can take place in a quick and simple manner.
This object is achieved with the container according to the invention, which is characterized in that the reinforcing elements adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction of the side wall are hingedly connected to each other.
Due to this feature, the collapsible container can be easily folded and unfolded, without the need to perform additional operations to obtain a side wall provided with reinforcing elements all around to describe the circumferential shape on the inside of the container.
The sheet material can comprise many materials, such as woven or non-woven material, plastic, foil, cloth, etc.
Preferably, the side wall is provided with more than four circumferentially adjacent reinforcing elements, each of which has at least approximately a flat shape, wherein in the unfolded condition, the circumferentially adjacent reinforcing elements are angled with one another. The advantage of this embodiment is that for the same content of the container, the width of each reinforcing element is narrower than with four reinforcing elements. This means that the outwardly directed force on a stiffening element due to a filled bag in the container has a shorter arm relative to the edge of a stiffening element in the circumferential direction, so that a stiffening element has a reduced tendency to bend. As a result, the reinforcing elements can be made lighter.
In addition, if the side wall is provided with eight circumferentially adjacent reinforcing elements, a simple folding method can be used, in which two opposite ribs of the octagonal container can be moved inwards, after which the opposed side wall parts, which are then formed, do not adjacent to said ribs, can be moved towards each other. This creates a compact shape in the folded condition. The reinforcing elements can optionally have a rectangular shape and each have the same dimensions, so that production costs are minimized.
In a preferred embodiment, the reinforcing elements are completely enveloped by sheet material, which is preferably made from recyclable disposable material. After use, the sheet material can be removed and discarded or recycled. The reinforcing elements can then be reused by wrapping them with new sheet material, so that a clean container is obtained again. A suitable material is, for example, polypropylene covered with polyethylene. This is sturdy material, closes well and is recyclable.
The reinforcement elements may be spaced circumferentially from the side wall, the sheet material being between the reinforcement elements such that they are pivotable relative to each other. As a result, the sheet-like material is used not only for enveloping the reinforcing elements, but also as simple hinges. In practice, the reinforcing elements can for instance be introduced into a kind of bag-shaped segments of the sheet-shaped material, wherein the bag-shaped segments are sewn in and can be closed with closing means such as, for example, Velcro, after the insertion of the reinforcing elements.
The reinforcing element can comprise a metal frame, which is preferably provided with rod-shaped elements welded together. This can be done relatively lightly, while it can easily be straightened after use if it is deformed. Preferably, the rods are formed of solid material because tubular rods are more difficult to return to their original shape after deformation than rods made of solid material. It is also possible to make the reinforcement elements from plastic or other materials. One can think for example of plastic panels.
The holder can be provided with a mold holding member, which is designed and connected to the side wall, so that after the holder has been unfolded, the positions of the reinforcing elements relative to each other are maintained in the circumferential shape. The advantage of this is that the desired shape can be easily maintained. Moreover, when unfolded, this measure surprisingly facilitates the unfolding process.
The mold holding member may comprise a flexible bottom wall which is connected to the side wall and which is at least approximately taut in the unfolded state. This can for instance be a bottom cloth that completely seals the bottom of the container, although complete sealing is not necessary. Preferably, the bottom wall is made of the same sheet material as that of the side wall and attached to the side wall near the bottom of the container.
The form holding member may also comprise a flexible top wall which is connected to the side wall and is at least partially at least approximately taut in the unfolded state. Optionally, both a bottom wall and top wall are arranged at the holder. It has been found that a stable container is obtained by a fixed connection of the top wall and the bottom wall to the side wall of the container. In a practical embodiment, the bottom wall and the top wall as well as the side wall are provided with sheet-shaped material and both are sewn to the side wall. Other ways of fastening are also possible.
In an advantageous embodiment, the top wall is provided with an opening for placing a fillable bag in the container therethrough, which opening is preferably closable. This can be, for example, by means of a zipper, but other embodiments are also conceivable.
The invention also relates to a bag-holder combination, wherein the above-mentioned holder is provided with a fillable bag in the space on the inside of the holder.
The invention also relates to a method for reusing the above-mentioned foldable holder, wherein after use of the holder the sheet-shaped material and the reinforcing elements are detached from each other and the reinforcing elements are covered with another sheet-like material. The advantage of this method is that after use of the container it does not have to be discarded as a whole, but that the reinforcing elements can be used in a new or cleaned sheet-shaped material.
The invention will be further elucidated hereinbelow on the basis of very schematic drawings, which show an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a very schematic and partly cut-away perspective view of an embodiment of the folding container according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a very schematic top plan view of the container of FIG. 1 at a different scale, illustrating a method of folding the container.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the container of FIG. 1 on a deviating scale, illustrating the folded condition.
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a folding container 1 according to the invention. The container 1 is used in practice to receive a bag which can be filled with liquid material (not shown). This type of container 1 in combination with a bag contained therein is known as a bag-in-box, or bag-in-container combination. The container 1 can be made in different dimensions and is suitable, for example, for volumes in the order of 1000 liters.
In practice, bag-in-container combinations are used for transporting liquid products, the liquid product being stored in the bag contained in container 1. After emptying the bag, it is often thrown away, because reuse is undesirable, for example in connection with hygiene in the case of food, while the cost of a new bag generally does not outweigh the cost of cleaning it.
Currently, it is also less and less desirable in industry to reuse the container, because it often becomes dirty during, for example, transport, storage, filling or emptying. However, the container is an expensive product because of the firmness requirements imposed on it, which is preferably not discarded after use. In the example shown in FIG. 1 of the container 1 shown, it is provided with reinforcing elements 2 which are completely enclosed by velvety material 3. This can be all kinds of thin and flexible plate-like material, such as non-woven or woven material, plastic, foil, cloth, etc. After using the container 1, it can be folded and transported to a recycling center. There, the sheet material 3 can be removed, the reinforcement elements 2 optionally cleaned and repaired if necessary, after which a new sheet material 3 can be applied to the reinforcement elements 2. The costs for reusing the container are thus limited to the application of a new sheet material 3. Preferably, because of the environmental aspect, the sheet material 3 is recyclable disposable material.
The embodiment of the container 1 has an unfolded position, as shown in Fig. 1 and a folded state, as shown in FIG. 3. In the unfolded state, a space on the inside of the container 1 is enveloped by a side wall 4 which is provided with the reinforcement elements 3. These are inserted in the sheet-like material 3 in double-walled bag-shaped segments. The bag-shaped segments are closed at the top by a flap (not shown) of the same sheet-like material 3 with the aid of Velcro, so that the reinforcing elements can be easily removed from the bag-shaped segments after use of the container. Of course, many other embodiments with regard to the application of the reinforcing elements 2 to the sheet-like material 3 are conceivable.
The reinforcement elements 2 arranged in the sheet-like material 3 describe the circumferential shape of the side wall 4 on the inside of the container 1. In the embodiment shown, the circumferential shape on the inside of the container 1 is an octagon with at least approximately equal sides in the circumferential direction of the side wall 4. The reinforcement elements 2 each have at least approximately a flat shape and adjacent reinforcement elements 2 make an angle with each other and are hingedly connected to each other.
It is possible to provide a different number of reinforcement elements 2 than eight in the circumferential direction of the side wall 4. Three flat elements 2 would lead to an unfavorable pull-in shape, because the cross section of the holder 1 would form a relatively small area. For a rectangular circumferential shape with four elements 2, relatively heavy-duty elements 2 must be used, because the elements are then wide and tend to bend quickly in the case of a filled bag in the container 1. Moreover, it is not possible to holder 1 can be folded in a compact manner. More than four elements 2 has the advantage that the elements 2 can be made lighter, but a larger number of elements 2 also leads to an approximation of a circular circumferential shape, whereby the cross-sectional area within the circumferential shape is reduced if the maximum diameter of the circumferential shape remains equal to the maximum distance between two opposite sides of the polygon.
The holder 1 with the octagonal shape is preferred. The advantage of its compact folding method is illustrated in Fig. 2 and 3. FIG. 2 shows how two opposite ribs of the holder 1 can be moved towards each other, after which the four elements 2 not folded inwards can be moved in pairs towards each other, so that finally the shape according to FIG. 3 is obtained when folded.
Incidentally, in this embodiment the reinforcing elements 2 are made relatively light, because the holder does not have to be stacked.
In the embodiment, the reinforcing elements are hinged relative to each other, because the reinforcing elements 2 are spaced circumferentially from the side wall 4 and the sheet-like material between the elements 2 functions as a hinge.
The reinforcing element 2 comprises a metal frame, which is built up of welded rod-shaped elements, as shown in the cut-away view according to Fig.
1. The rod-shaped elements are preferably made of a solid material, because it is easier to bend straight than, for example, tubular rods after deformation thereof.
The embodiment of the container 1 is also provided with a mold-holding member, which in this case is designed as a flexible bottom wall 5 and a flexible top wall 6 of the container 1. From a production point of view, it is preferable for the bottom wall 5 and the top wall 6 from the same sheet material 3 as that of the side wall 4. Both the bottom wall 5 and the top wall 6 are connected to the side wall 4, for example by sewing them together. By giving the bottom wall 5 and the top wall 6 such a shape and dimensions that, after the container 1 has been unfolded, the bottom wall 5 and the top wall 6 are at least approximately taut, the reinforcing elements 2 are retained in the circumferential shape relative to each other. Moreover, it turns out that this can be done surprisingly easily. Due to the flexibility and the foldability of the sheet-shaped material 3, the top wall 6 and bottom wall 5 do not form a disadvantageous obstruction when folding the container 1.
The top wall 6 is provided with an opening for arranging a fillable bag therein in the container 1. The opening in this embodiment can be closed by means of a flap 7. In this case flap 7 is part of the top wall 6, which a zipper 9 can be connected to the side wall 4. Of course, numerous alternatives are possible for a closable opening in the top wall 6. Nor is it necessary to place the opening in the top wall 6 near the side wall 4. Because of the strength it is preferable to keep the size of the opening relatively small, for instance smaller than half of the cross section of the container 1.
In FIG. 1 it can also be seen that the holder 1 is provided with straps 10 which extend on the outside of the holder 1 in the circumferential direction of the side wall 4. In this embodiment, the straps 10 are attached to the side wall 4 at the location of the ribs 11. The straps 10 serve for additional reinforcement and are moreover useful when folding out the holder 1 to pull the reinforcing elements 2 outwardly from the holder 1 .
From the foregoing it will be clear that with the folding container according to the invention folding and unfolding thereof can take place in a quick and simple manner. In addition, a container is provided that can be reused for the most part, such that after use a clean container can be manufactured again in a simple manner with limited costs.
The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment shown in the drawings, which can be varied in various ways within the scope of the invention. It is conceivable, for example, that the reinforcing elements are hingedly connected parts 10, around which a casing as a whole is arranged instead of around each reinforcing element.
