The Netherlands Patent Office is the Office for Industrial Property, an agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs
Title; Disposable cup for a paint sprayer and paint sprayer provided therewith.
The invention relates to a disposable cup for a paint sprayer.
Paint sprayers for spraying paints, lacquers, coatings and the like under pressure are known from practice. Paint sprayers can be distinguished with reusable cups and disposable cups.
The drawback of reusable cups is that they always have to be cleaned repeatedly, which is undesirable from an environmental point of view. In particular with paints, lacquers and the like that can only be dissolved and removed with environmentally friendly thinners and cleaning agents. In addition, such a cup must always be emptied completely before another paint, lacquer, coating or the like can be sprayed with the paint sprayer.
In order to mitigate or eliminate these drawbacks of reusable cups, it has already been proposed to use disposable cups on paint sprayers. Dergebjke cups are offered, for example, by 3M, Zoetermeer, the Netherlands and are described in, for example, US 6 595 441 and US 6 536 687. These patent references concern all paint sprayers where a reusable cup has a thin-walled disposable cup liner that can be removed from the reusable cup after it has been emptied via the paint gun and thrown away, possibly with a residual paint, varnish or coating or the medium to be sprayed. The cup is filled in an upright position and then covered with a lid onto which the paint sprayer is screwed in an upside-down position. The cup is then turned with a paint sprayer, so that the cup is turned upside down and paint can be sprayed from it via the paint sprayer.
WO 98/32539 describes similar solutions for using a disposable spray cup. In one embodiment, it shows a disposable spray cup which can be placed in the cup of the paint sprayer upside down, filled with paint or the like to be sprayed, in a closed position, so that it is immediately ready for use.
With all known disposable cups described above, the drawback arises that placement thereof and any filling is laborious and can easily lead to pollution of a user and his or her environment.
The object of the invention is to provide a disposable cup that is easy to use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a disposable cup that is easy to fill.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a disposable cup which can be used without reusable cups.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint gun provided with such a disposable cup.
At least some of these and further goals are achieved with a disposable cup according to the invention.
In a disposable cup according to the invention use is made of a closing part which is arranged in the bottom of the cup and which closes liquid at least on that bottom side of the cup. Only when the cup is placed on a paint sprayer, this closing part is at least partially pushed away and a liquid connection can be created between the paint gun and the contents of the cup.
A cup according to the invention offers the advantage that it can be filled in an upright position and placed on a paint gun, after which it is immediately ready for use.
A further advantage of a cup according to the invention is that it is simple in construction and use.
A disposable cup according to the invention preferably has a relatively large filling opening opposite the bottom on which, for example, a known paint screen can be placed for filling the disposable cup with the desired liquid, such as paint, lacquer or coating. It is preferred here that a disposable cup according to the invention can stand on the bottom, at least an associated device, so that the filling opening is exposed at the top. This makes filling and closing the disposable cup even simpler.
In a disposable cup according to the invention, use is preferably made of a lid which closes the disposable cup on the side remote from the bottom. This lid is preferably movable within the cup and closes substantially airtight against the inner side of the longitudinal wall. The longitudinal wall is herein preferably substantially cylindrical over most of the height of the cup, so that the lid can move from the longitudinal edge away from the bottom around a filling opening to near the bottom and still retain the desired substantially airtight seal. . During use, the lid preferably follows the liquid level in the disposable cup, preferably at a relatively small distance, so that underpressure in the disposable cup is prevented and, moreover, no undesired air flows into the said liquid. This maintains the quality of the liquid to be sprayed in the disposable cup even better.
A sealing profile can be provided along the circumference of the lid to obtain a good sealing. This can for instance be an integral part of the lid.
In a disposable cup according to the invention, the edge of the longitudinal wall of the cup facing away from the bottom is preferably designed such that it can be folded inwards after the lid has been placed in the cup. Due to the inwardly folded edge, the lid is thus enclosed within the disposable cup. This simply prevents accidental removal of the lid and the disposable cup can also be used in a position other than upright, for example horizontally or even upside down. Incidentally, the said rim can also be manufactured in an inwardly folded position, such that the lid can be introduced into the disposable cup under temporary deformation, after which the rim will again essentially take up its original shape, thereby locking the lid.
In this upright is to be understood as a position in which the bottom is turned down.
The longitudinal wall of the disposable cup is preferably formed, for example with a minimum discharge angle, that at least two such disposable cups can be nested. Lids can then be stored separately from the cups.
In a lid of or for a disposable cup according to the invention, a venting means is preferably provided, for instance a valve or the like. As a result, a pressure difference between the interior of the cup and the environment during use can be easily compensated, for example for the lid to be able to move.
The invention further relates to an assembly of a spray cup according to the invention and an adapter for positioning on a spray gun.
An adapter in an assembly according to the invention offers the advantage that it is possible to use a spray cup according to the invention on a standard spray gun. The adapter is particularly useful for opening the spray cup during its placement on the spray gun. The disposable spray cup can be easily coupled to the adapter, with the adapter simply placed on the spray gun.
The invention further relates to an assembly of a disposable cup and a spray gun, characterized by the features of claim 16.
Such an assembly offers the advantage that the disposable cup 5 can be easily filled, separate from the spray gun, and subsequently coupled to the spray gun, while simultaneously opening a closure of the cup. As a result, contamination of the environment is easily prevented, both when the cup is filled and when it is placed and connected. In addition, no additional actions are required for connection.
The invention furthermore relates to a method for providing a spray cup on a spray gun, characterized by the measures according to claim 17.
With such a method, a spray beaker for a spray gun can be prepared and applied to the spray gun in a particularly simple and clean manner.
The invention furthermore relates to a lid for a spray beaker, in particular suitable for use within the invention.
In the other subclaims, further advantageous embodiments are given. For clarification, exemplary embodiments of the invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the drawing. In it shows:

In this description, only embodiments of the invention are shown, which are not to be taken as limiting in any way. Like or corresponding parts have like or corresponding reference numerals in the different figures. Combinations and assemblies of parts of the various embodiments shown are considered to be disclosed here.
Fig. 1 shows an assembly of a disposable cup 1, and a spray gun 2, mutually coupled by an adapter 3. The disposable cup 1 will further also be referred to as cup 1. The spray gun 2 can be known as a spray gun known from the prior art executed. Such spray guns are provided with a connection 4 for a pressurized gas and a trigger mechanism 5 for spraying paint or lacquer or like liquids, suspensions or the like, from a cup 1, via a nozzle 6. A suitable spray gun is provided for coupling with known cups. 2 usually equipped with a coupling 7 such as, for instance, screw thread into or onto which a (fixed) spray cup can be screwed. A bayonet closure or the like can also be provided instead of screw thread. According to the invention, this coupling 7 is used for placing the adapter 3, as will be described in more detail. Since such spray guns are sufficiently known, this is not further discussed here.
The cup 1 is made of relatively thin plastic, preferably at least partially transparent. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the cup 1 has a cup shape with a bottom 8 and an upright wall 9 which in the embodiment shown is substantially cylindrical or truncated
028575 conical, so that the wall 9 tapers slightly towards the bottom 8, so that the cup is released. For example, the angle α of the wall 9 with the bottom 8 on the inside of the cup 1 is slightly greater than 90 °, for example between 90 ° and 94 °, more particularly about 92 °, so that the cups 1 can be nested. On the side remote from the bottom 8, the cup 1 has an opening 11 defined by a longitudinal edge 10 of the wall 9, in which in fig. 1 a lid 46 in a semi-closed position is shown. This will be explained in more detail below. A closing part 13 is provided in the bottom 8, shown in fig. 1 in open position, which is operated by the adapter 3. First coupling means 14 are provided for coupling the adapter 3 to the cup 1 at the bottom 8, in a manner to be described in more detail yet. The adapter is provided on the side remote from the cup 1 with second coupling means 15 for coupling to the coupling 7 of the spray gun 2. This means that a suitable adapter 3 can easily be provided for each type of spray gun 2. On the underside of the bottom 8, legs 16 are arranged on which the cup 1 can be placed on a surface, for example on a table, when it is detached from the adapter. The first coupling means 14 are designed in such a way that they do not reach below the free underside of the legs 16, so that the cup 1 can be placed in a stable position. By legs 16 is to be understood herein to mean any element that extends from or near the bottom to enable the cup 1 to be placed in an upright position, with the opening 11 facing up. In such a position, the cup 1 can be filled with a medium to be sprayed, such as paint or lacquer. The plastic from which the cup 1 is made is preferably rigid such that the cup is self-supporting, i.e. not deformed to a relevant degree if the cup 1, filled with, for example, paint or lacquer, is placed or picked up and manipulated during placement on the adapter and / or the spray gun.
Fig. 2 schematically shows, in cross-sectional side view, a cup 1 on an adapter 3 according to the invention, with partly removed
28575 wall 9 at the height of the lid 46. In Fig. 2 only the left part is shown for simplification. The right part is, mirrored, the same. Fig. 3 and 4 together with fig. 5 clearly show the first coupling means 14 and the second coupling means 15. These figures will therefore be discussed together.
From the bottom 8, from the underside thereof, extend two substantially concentric edges 17, 18, between which an annular groove 19 is provided. The closing part 13 is provided within the inner concentric edge 17. On two opposite sides of the edges 17, 18, two snap edges 20, each with an undercut 21, extend open from the underside of the bottom 8 on the side remote from the opposite snap edge 20. Above the undercuts there remains an outwardly extending coupling flange 20A with a thickness di.
The adapter 3 has a pipe-shaped first part 22 with, for example, external screw thread 23 as second coupling means 15. A passage 24 extends through this pipe-shaped first part 23. It will be clear that this can easily be adapted to a coupling of a specific spray gun 2. A second part 25 extends outwardly from one end of the pipe-shaped first part 23 in the form of a flange with a top 26 remote from the first part 23. On this top side a sealing edge 27 concentric with the passage 24 is provided which can be accommodated in a fitting and sealing manner in the groove 19 of the bottom 8. Along the periphery 28 of the second part 25, a coupling edge 29 is provided on the top side thereof, with two opposite sides an inwardly extending flange 30, each of which is connected on one side to the flange 25 via a breech wall 31. The distance d2 between the top 26 of the flange 25 and the bottom of each flange 30 is approximately equal to the thickness d1 of the coupling edge 20A of the cup 1. The coupling edges 20A each enclose a circle segment with an angle α, while the flanges 30 each enclose a circle segment with an angle b. The sum of the angles a and b is preferably about 360 °.
When the bottom 8 of the cup 1 is placed on the adapter 3, such that the packing edge 27 is received in the groove 19, the coupling edges 20A will be able to pass between the flanges 30. By subsequently rotating the cup 3 relative to the adapter 3 about a then joint longitudinal axis L, in Fig. 5 in the clockwise direction R, the coupling edges 20A can be moved under the flanges 30, until they are against the bump walls 31 calls. This provides a bayonet-shaped coupling, collectively referred to as first coupling means 14.
As can be clearly seen from Figs. 4 and 4A, the closing part 13 within the inner edge 17 comprises a bridge part 32 which forms an integral part of the bottom 8. On either side of this bridge part 32, a flap 33 is provided with, for instance, approximately a semicircular peripheral edge 34, which flap is connected to the bridge part 32 via a substantially straight bving binge 35. The peripheral edge 34 is connected to the bottom 8 via a tear line 36, for example a local material thinning or weakening, adjoining the peripheral edge 34. As a result, a liquid-tight bottom 8 is obtained with unopened closing part 13. In this embodiment, the closing part 13 can be injection molded in one piece, together with the further cup 1. On each flap 33 a cam 37 is arranged, for instance an edge or a pin. Between the passage 24 and the gasket edge 27, the adapter 3 is provided with two counter-cams 38, such that when the cup 1 rotates relative to the adapter 3 about the axis L, they come into contact with the cams 37 on the closing part 13. The cams 37 and / or the counter-cams 38 have an inclined surface 39 and 40, respectively, ascending in the direction R, The height hi of the cams 37 and / or the counter-cams 38 is chosen such that the lowest ends, which lie in the direction of rotation R 41, 42 thereof may bend on or above each other when the cup 1 is placed on the adapter 3 and at the start of the rotation in the direction R, while the ends 43 located in the direction of rotation R, 44 have a height h2 such that when the coupling edges 20A abut the butt surfaces 31 these ends 43, 44 lie one above the other and have a joint height H which is greater than the distance ha between the surface 25 and the closing part 13, at least the flaps 33 if they would be in closed position. This means that with said maximum rotation of the cup 1 in the direction R relative to the adapter 3, the flaps 33 will be pushed upwards by the cooperating cams 37 and counter-cams 38. As a result, the flaps will tear off along said peripheral edge 34 while they will pivot around the respective living hinges 35. As a result, a passage opening P is created along each flap 33, a connection between the inner space of the cup 1 and the passage 24 and thus to the spray gun 2. Incidentally, it will be clear that the heights hi for the cams 37 and the counter cams 38 do not have to be the same nor the height ha of the cams and counter cams.
Fig. 6 shows an alternative embodiment of an adapter 3 with a closing part 13 thereon, as is normally included in the cup 1. In this embodiment, only counter-cams 38 are provided on the adapter
3. In this embodiment, the cup 1 can be pressed onto the adapter, whereby the flaps 33 are pivoted upwards after they have been torn loose along said peripheral edge. In this embodiment, the outer thread is clearly shown as a second coupling means.
Incidentally, in this embodiment, the bayonet coupling between the adapter and the cup, as the first coupling means 14, can also be designed such that when the cup is rotated relative to the adapter in the direction R, the cup, at least its bottom closer to the adapter is pulled and thus the flaps are pushed upwards.
Fig. 7 shows a cup 1 according to the invention, similar to that shown in fig. 3. In fig. 7, the cup 1 is shown in three steps of use, which will be described from left to right. On the left the cup is shown empty. The longitudinal edge 10 is provided with a number of cuts 80 in the wall 9, whereby folding lips 45 are formed. After the cup 1 has been filled (in fig. 7 not shown), as shown in the middle, a lid 46 is pushed through the opening 11 into the cup 1. A part of the lid 46 is shown in section in Fig. 8. The lid 46 has a central surface 47 with a slightly curved outer edge 48. From the outer edge 48 a V-shaped sealing edge 49 extends. This sealing edge 49 comprises a first upwardly calling flap 50 and a second downwardly inclining flap 51 which are connected to each other via a living hinge 52, while a second living hinge 52A is injection molded between the outer edge 48 and the central surface 47. The dimensions and shape of the lid are such that the flaps 50, 51 are pressed against the inside of the wall 9 and close liquid tight against them and preferably also airtight. As a result of the bending hinges and possible deformability of the flaps 50, 51 and / or the outer edge 48, an outwardly directed pressure will be obtained while the flaps can decrease the diameter of the wall when the lid is moved towards the bottom 8 to follow.
As shown in Fig. 7 on the right side, the folding lips 45 can be folded inwards, against the inside of the wall 9. This prevents the lid from being moved back out of the cup.
In figures 9A-D, in four illustrations, an alternative embodiment of a lid 46 and cup 1 is shown. Fig. 9A shows an empty cup 1 ready to be filled. Then, as shown in fig.
9B the lid 46 is pressed into the cup 1. The lid 46 can be pressed down further because a bleed valve 53 is provided in the lid 46. In the embodiment shown, the vent valve 53 is formed by two lips 54 which are pressed together by material tension. Fig. 9E shows a detail, in cross section, of the bleed valve 53, in closed position. Two upright cams 55 are provided at both ends of the lips 54. By pressing the cams 55 towards each other, the lips 54 are pressed slightly apart, so that air can escape between the lips 54. As long as the lips 54 rest against each other, the valve 53 is airtight. However, if the lid is pressed downwards, in the direction of the bottom 8, there will be overpressure in the cup, whereby the lips will be pressed slightly apart from the inside, so that air can escape and the pressure is equalized. Incidentally, such a valve or a comparable valve can also be used in other embodiments.
After the lid 46 has been pressed down sufficiently, as shown in Fig. 9G, the edge 10 of the wall 9 can be folded inward, as shown in Fig. 9D, thereby locking the lid 46 in the cup 1.
During use, paint or varnish or the like to be sprayed medium can be discharged from the cup via said passages to the spray gun and sprayed. As a result, the level of the liquid in the cup drops. The lid 46 will be sucked down as a result of the resulting vacuum, following the level. This prevents the liquid from coming out of the cup. Incidentally, such an airtight and liquid-tight sealing by the lid has the advantage that a spray gun of the lower cup type can also be used with an assembly according to the invention.
Fig. 10 and 11 show an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention, in particular an alternative disposable cup 1. In this embodiment, the bottom 8 is relatively rigid and designed as discussed above. The wall 9, on the other hand, is relatively flexible. Such that flexible that two opposite sides of the wall 9 can be pressed together, so that the opening 11 is closed to form two straight longitudinal edge parts 10 which lie against each other. A closure strip 56 in the form of a tube with a longitudinal cut 57 can be clamped over these two longitudinal edge parts 10 so that the cup 1 is closed. Fig. 11A and B show the cup 1 according to Fig. 10 on a spray gun 2, respectively in the full state and in the (partially) emptied state. In Fig. 11C, the cup 1 is shown from the bottom. The adapter 3 is clearly visible secured against the bottom 9 and the feet 16, so that the cup 1 can stand.
Fig. 12A shows an alternative embodiment of a bottom side of a cup 1 in which an edge 61 is provided which has a top surface 62 rising in a direction R. When the adapter 3 is coupled to the bottom 8 of the cup 1, it is rotated in the direction R and thereby drawn closer to the bottom 8, so that the flaps 33 are pressed open.
In Fig. 12B a further alternative embodiment of a bottom 9 of a cup 1 with closing part 13 and an adapter 3 co-operating therewith is shown. In this case, a groove is provided in the top surface 40 of the counter cams 38 in which the cams 37 are guided. In this embodiment, the slope and thus the required height difference between the maximum height H of the cams 37 and counter cams 38 and the distance I13 is achieved by the counter cams 38. As a result, the flaps 33 are pressed open.
In Figs. 14-17, embodiments of in particular alternative lids 46 for spray cups 1 according to the invention are shown. In general, these lids 46 have a deformable middle part which can be deformed under the influence of slight underpressure in the cup 1 which can occur during use, in particular can be drawn towards and into the inner space of the cup. This middle part is preferably designed in such a way that in deformed condition it can extend approximately along the inside of the wall 9 and bottom 8, at a relatively small distance therefrom, so that between cover 46 and wall 9 and bottom 8 there is only a particularly small space included.
Fig. 14A shows a spray cup 1 with lid 46 according to the invention in cross-sectional side view, the lid being shown undeformed on the right side and in the deformed state on the left side. In this embodiment, the lid 46 can be made of one material, as shown in Fig. 14B, as well as of several materials, for example by 2K injection molding, as shown in Fig. 14C. The lid 46 comprises an edge 70 and a middle part 71. In the fig. In the embodiment shown in 14B, these are integrally formed, in Fig. 14C the edge 70 is made of a relatively rigid material and the middle part 71 of a flexible material. The rim 70 is fixable on the top edge 10 of the wall 9, as shown in Fig. 17, such that the center portion 71 extends over the opening 11 and closes it. For this purpose, the rim 70 can be clamped under the longitudinal edge 10 of the cup 1 or, for example, clamped or glued to the top edge of the longitudinal edge 10. The central part 71 is folded in a ring-shaped accordion. To this end, annular flanks 72 are provided which bubble relative to each other and are mutually connected by upper and lower circular folding lines 73, 74. The total distance between the edge 70 and the center 75 of the cover 46, measured along the flanks 72 over the fold lines 73, 74, is preferably approximately equal to the height of the wall 9 and the diameter of the bottom 8.
In fig. 15 an alternative embodiment of a lid 46 is shown, comparable to that according to fig. 14. However, in this embodiment a clamping edge 76 is provided which can be pressed from above over the edge 70 and under an edge of the longitudinal edge 10. of the cup 1 can be clamped. The clamping edge 76 may have a number of spokes 77 for reinforcement.
Figures 16A and B show a further alternative embodiment of a lid according to the invention. Here again, an edge is 70
028575 provided with a central part 71 which, however, is manufactured in the form of a bellows 80. Here, a harmonica folded wall 78 is provided, which connects to a bottom part 79. In fig. 16B this is shown in the collapsed position, in fig. 16A in partly unfolded position, the wall 78 extending along the inside of the wall 9 of the cup. extends. The stiffness and elasticity of the bellows 80 are chosen such that the space 81 between the bellows and the wall 9 and bottom 8 of the cup 1 can be minimized and preferably substantially zero in volume. As a result, virtually all paint or paint can be forced out of the cup during use. The rim 70 can again be secured to the longitudinal edge 10 of the cup 1, for example by clamping as shown or as previously described.
During use, when liquid is discharged from the cup 1, as the liquid level drops, an underpressure will arise in the cup 1. In the embodiments of Figs. 14-17, the center portion 71 will follow this liquid level, whereby virtually all liquid can be dispensed with almost constant pressure. After all, any underpressure will be minimized and itself eliminated by the deformation of the lid 46, at least the middle part 71.
Fig. 17A and B show in cross-sectional view two possible attachments of the rim 70 to the longitudinal edge 10 of a cup 1. It is clear that in Fig. 17A the rim 70 comprises a snap edge 82 which is pressed under the rim 10 and encloses the rim 70. In Fig. 17B, the clamping edge 76 is provided with a comparable click edge 82. The clamping edge substantially covers the edge 70.
It is preferable that a screen 63 is provided between the bottom 8 and the passage 24. This screen 63 may be provided in the adapter, as shown, for example, in Fig. 2, 5B or 13. In Fig. 2, a flat screen 63 is provided. Fig. 5B shows an embodiment of a screen 63 which is provided with a handle 64, so that it can be easily removed. In addition, the handle 64 can abut or in an opening 65 in the bridge portion 32, thereby locking it up. Fig. 13 shows a substantially cylindrical sieve 63 which is placed in a recess, in particular in the passage 24 in the adapter, between the counter cams 38.
A graduation X is preferably shown on the cup 1. for example a milliliter scale, so that it is clearly visible how much liquid is in the cup and how far the lid has been pressed into the cup. Especially if the cup is transparent. An outer cover (not shown) may be provided which can be fitted over the opening 11 and the lid 46 in the cup 1, while a cap (not shown) may be provided for covering the closure part 13 from the outside. This cap can for instance be fixed in the same way as the adapter 3. This prevents contamination. These variations can of course be used in all embodiments according to the invention.
The invention is by no means limited to the embodiments shown in the description and drawings. Many variations thereof are possible within the framework of the invention outlined by the claims.
For instance, the closing part can be provided with an insert that can be or is pressed into an opening in the bottom of the cup. This closing part can for instance be formed loosely and glued or clamped in the bottom. The cup can be pre-filled with the liquid to be sprayed. The cup can be made of other non-transparent plastic. The first and / or second coupling means can be designed in other ways, for instance as screw means or with a clamping ring which clamps the cup against the adapter.
