Holder for smart card activated by fingerprint detection
Abstract
The card (2) is inserted in the holder (1) so that the fingerprint detector (4) lines up with the hole in the rear of the holder and signals can pass between the circuits on the card and those on the holder. The user inserts an index finger (3) into the detector hole and uses the thumb to press the switch (7) which triggers validation. The holder has LEDs which illuminate the fingerprint, so that a charge coupled device can detect the image. After validation, the user presses the other switch (11). The circuits on the card then interrogate the card and display the remaining value data on an LCD numerical read-out (10).

(54) Chip card holder with fingerprint reader.
© A chip card holder, which acts as an interface between a chip card reader and the chip card inserted in the holder, which includes a fingerprint reader and a residual balance display. A fingerprint of the card provider can be compared to a fingerprint of the cardholder to establish the authenticity of the provider and to approve a transaction to be executed. The interface between the holder and a card reader can be contact based and / or function contactless. The fingerprint is recorded with a camera chip, the exposure being based on the critical angle of refraction of a transparent window, which is irradiated from the side. The amount of data is limited and compressed to simplify processing.

-1 CHIP CARD HOLDER WITH FINGERPRINT READER
The invention relates to a holder for a standard smart card or electronic chip card, with a fingerprint reader integrated therein and, if necessary, provisions for reading the balance of the electronic exchange or other credits.
With the gradual transition from cash to 10 electronic exchanges, it is becoming increasingly important to establish the authenticity of both the chip card and the carrier of this chip card when making payment transactions with this chip card. The carrier of the chip card also wants to be able to read the balance or other credits, such as bonus points or stripping of public transport, at any time. In addition, it is particularly important in public transport to be able to carry out the necessary transactions quickly, with contactless handling being preferred. It must also be possible to establish the identity of the chip card carrier unambiguously, for example for the purpose of granting access or payment transactions.
The present invention combines the above matters in a simple manner in a holder in which the chip card can be stored and will be described below with reference to a few figures.
Figure 1 shows the holder of the chip card with integrated a fingerprint reader, a display, one or more function keys and a contactless, and / or a contact-based, interface for a standard chip card: reader.
Figure 2 schematically shows in detail the arrangement of the camera chip and the exposure of the finger.
-2 Figure 3 shows the holder for the chip card, with a folded-out part, on which are the contacts for a standard chip card reader.
The holder (1) for the chip card (2) in figure 1 is designed such that, for example, the user's index finger (3) lies on a transparent window (4 rear side), under which, as shown schematically in the detail section of figure 2 , a so-called CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera chip (5). Apart from the thin transparent window (4), there are no further imaging optical components such as lenses between the finger (3) and the camera chip (5). The image therefore consists, as it were, of a contact recording of the fingerprint by the camera chip (5). According to the invention, the exposure of the finger (3) is provided by one or more light-emitting diodes (6), which irradiate sideways in the transparent window (4). At all locations where no contact is made with the skin of the fingertip, the critical angle of refraction in the transparent window (4) will prevent illumination of the finger (3), in contrast to the places where contact between the finger and the finger transparent window (4) is created. Due to the changing refractive index, the light exits from the transparent window here, so that the fingertip is illuminated on the spot.
Figure 2 gives a detail of the light reflection, as it occurs in the transparent window (4).
Since only one fingerprint per chip card holder, namely that of the owner, needs to be verified, the data processing of the signal from the camera chip (5) is considerably simplified and only consists of a comparison of a previously recorded image with the image which is recorded when the authenticity of the user of the chip card (2) is to be determined.
Because the amount of information from only one frame from a CCD camera chip is still very large, it is found
The system according to the invention performs a data reduction before the images are compared with each other. The image of the owner's fingerprint, included in the initialization of the chip card, is previously stored in a reduced form in the chip card using a data reduction algorithm. Also, when recording successive fingerprints, a slight shift of the position of the fingertip relative to the camera chip (5) may occur. In the system according to the invention, this is compensated for by applying a slight shift in length and subsequently in width for each recorded image before comparing the images. In total, an area of a few square millimeters of possible finger displacement is absorbed by each time comparing a shifted image with the original image, which is recorded in compressed form in the chip card.
By making a contact image of the finger and therefore virtually no image errors can occur and the fact that the distance between the wrinkles of a fingerprint is greater than the distance between the pixel elements of a CCD camera chip, an extremely simple digitization of the image information. In principle, one bit per pixel is sufficient for this, so that the output of the CCD camera chip can be converted into a binary digital signal with only one comparator or threshold comparison and a very simplified data processing is possible.
When comparing the original image of the fingerprint of the chip card owner with the currently recorded image, the ratio between the number of matching and the number of mismatched pixel elements of the image is determined. The acceptance threshold can be set to a predetermined minimum ratio.
The energy supply of the electronics in the holder and of the chip card inserted in this holder becomes
-4 provided by one or more batteries, which are housed in the holder.
The advantage for the user when applying the system according to the invention is that, for example, in the event of loss or theft of the chip card, with or without a holder, other persons can no longer use the value of the money, which is the electronic fair is located. In addition, the user does not have to remember and enter a personal identification number (PIN), which allows for faster transactions.
With the same operation, with which the chip card holder is gripped and the fingerprint is taken up and compared, the authenticity of the chip card holder is also determined with the aid of the chip card holder according to the invention.
If a contactless interface is added to the chip card holder according to the invention, for example according to the standard ISO-10536 or ISO-14443 of the International Standardization Organization, a considerable reduction in the transaction duration can be achieved. This is because the card no longer has to be inserted in a slot. Optionally, a push button (7) is added to the chip card holder to start the authentication process and to approve a possible payment transaction.
In order to also be able to use the fingerprint recording at a terminal with contacts, as defined in the standard ISO-7816, the chip card holder can be extended with a cover (8), as shown in figure 3, on which the contacts ( 9), where the cover (8) is the size of a chip card and can be inserted into a standard card reader with contacts. In this way, authentication of the card user can also take place at such a terminal, prior to a financial transaction.
To the residual balance of, for example, an electronic exchange in the chip card (2), bonus points, or stripping it
-5 to read public transport, the chip card holder (1) can further be equipped with a display (10), on which the balance information of the chip card can be indicated. This function can, for example, be activated via an additional push button (11).
