Abstract

An emergency location informer system includes: an emergency mobile positioning, EMP, server (12); an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) storing civic addresses and associated tags that are provided by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) over the IP network; a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C), EMP-AP component (16) executing on a processor of an AP (30A, 30B, 30C) at a civic address known to the ISP (24), the EMP-AP component (16) providing a tag, known to the ISP (24), forming a part of a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal transmitted by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C); and a mobile operating system, OS, EMP-OS component (18) executing on a processor of a cell phone (32) and operative to monitor the beacon signal of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and to store the tag, the EMP-OS component (18) being further operative to embed the tag in an emergency call from the cell phone (32) to the EMP server (12) over a network.

    CLAIMS 1. An emergency location informer system (10) comprising:an emergency mobile positioning, EMP, server (12) communicating over a public switched telephone network, PSTN, a cellular network and an internet protocol, IP, network;an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) storing known civic addresses and associated tags of wireless access points, APs, (30A, 30B, 30C) that are provided by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) as a trusted 3 rd party source over the IP network;wherein the tags are not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via the ESN database entry a civic address of a location from where an emergency call is originating;an EMP-AP component (16) stored in non-transitory computer readable media and executing on a processor of a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) at a civic address known to the ISP, the EMP-AP component (16) communicating tag information with the ISP over the IP network, the tag information including a tag associated with the civic address and stored in the ESN database server (14), the tag forming a part of a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal transmitted by the AP (30), wherein the EMP-AP component (16) is generated by the ISP, transmitted to the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) over the IP network and stored in the non-transitory computer readable media of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), the EMP-AP component (16) including code segments for embedding the tag into beacon frames of the RF beacon signal along with other beacon information provided by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C);and an EMP-OS component (18) incorporated into an operating system, OS, and executing on a processor of a cell phone (32) and operative to monitor the beacon signal of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and to store the tag, the EMP-OS component (18) being further operative to embed the tag in an emergency call from the cell phone (32) to the EMP server (12) over a network;whereby the EMP server (12) receives the tag embedded in the emergency call such that the civic address associated with the tag can be retrieved from the ESN database server (14).

    An emergency mobile positioning server (12) comprising:a processor (127);a public switched telephone network, PSTN, interface (128) coupled to the processor (127);a cellular network interface (129) coupled to the processor (127);an internet protocol, IP, network interface (130) coupled to the processor (127);memory (132) coupled to the processor (127), including code segments executable by the processor (127) including: (a) code segments receiving an emergency call via one or more of the PSTN interface (128), the cellular network interface (129), and the IP network interface (130);(b) code segments determining if there is location information related tothe emergency call, wherein the embedded tag is not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via a database entry provided by a trusted 3 rd party source, a civic address of a location from where an emergency call is originating;(c) code segments storing the location information if there is location information related to the emergency call;(d) code segments determining if there is an embedded tag for the emergency call;(e) code segments directing the emergency call to an emergency call center based upon available information if there is no embedded tag for the emergency call;(f) code segments providing bi-directional communication with an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) via the IP network interface (130), wherein the ESN database server (14) includes known civic addresses and associated tags of wireless access points, APs, (30A, 30B, 30C);(g) code segments directing the emergency call with the embedded tag to an ESN operator station (28) in an emergency call center if there is an embedded tag for the emergency call;wherein the associated to the civic address information is provided by the internet service provider, ISP, (24) to the ESN database server (14) over an IP network, and an EMP-AP component (16) is provided by the internet service provider, ISP, (24) over the IP network, a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) to serve as part of an AP operating system, the EMP-AP component (16) including code segments to embed a tag associated with a civic address as provided to the ESN database server (14) in a beacon frame of a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) such that the tag can be incorporated into an emergency call from a cell phone receiving the beacon frame.

    An emergency location informer system (10) comprising:an emergency mobile positioning, EMP, server (12) communicating over a public switched telephone network, PSTN, a cellular network and an internet protocol, IP,network;an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) storing known civic addresses and associated tags of wireless access points, APs, (30A, 30B, 30C) that are provided by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) as a trusted 3 rd party source over the IP network;wherein the tags are not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via the ESN database entry a civic address of a location from where an emergency call is originating;a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) EMP-AP component (16) executing on a processor of an AP at a civic address and with a Universal Resource Locator, URL, known to the ISP (24), the EMP-AP component (16) providing a tag associated with the civic address and stored in the ESN database server (14), known to the ISP (24), wherein the tag is embedded in a beacon frame that is continuously transmitted as a part of a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal with other beacon information provided by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C);and a mobile operating system, OS, EMP-OS component (18) executing on a processorof a cell phone and operative to monitor the beacon signal of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and to retrieve and store the tag on the cell phone, the EMP-OS component (18) being further operative toembed the stored tag in a subsequent emergency call from the cell phone to the EMP server (12) over a network;whereby the EMP server (12) receives the tag of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) embedded in the subsequent emergency call such that the civic address associated with the tag of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) can be retrieved from the ESN database server (14).

    An emergency mobile positioning method:receiving (138) an emergency call with an embedded tag associated with a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) having a known civic address via one or more of the PSTN interface (128), the cellular network interface (129), and the IP network interface (130);querying (148) an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) storing known civic addresses with associated tags of wireless access points, APs, (30A, 30B, 30C) via an IP network interface (130) with the embedded tag of the emergency call to obtain civic address information;and directing (150) the emergency call with the embedded tag to an ESN operator station (28) of an emergency call center associated with the known civic address information of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) associated with the embedded tag;wherein the embedded tag is not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via a database entry provided by a trusted 3 rd party source, the civic address of a location from where the emergency call is originating, and the tag and civic address information are provided by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) to the ESN database server (14);wherein the tag is received in a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal by a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) connected to the ISP (24);and wherein the tag is added to a beacon frame by an EMP-AP component (16) as part of an AP operating system that includes code segments provided by the ISP (24).

    Non-transitory computer readable storage media comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor of a wireless access point, AP, (30A, 30B, 30C) cause the access point (30A, 30B, 30C) to carry out a method comprising:communicating tag information between an internet service provider, ISP, (24) coupled to the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and the wireless access point, AP, located at a civic address, wherein the tag is generated by at least one of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and the ISP (24) and is stored, by the ISP, (24) on an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) along withthe known civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), whereby the ISP (24) is a trusted 3 rd party source, and the tag is not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via a database entry provided by the ISP (24), the civic address of a location from where the emergency call is originating;embedding the tag in a beacon frame with other beacon information normally provided by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C);and transmitting the beacon frame as a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal, whereby the tag can be incorporated into an emergency call from a cell phone (32) receiving the beacon frame;whereby an ESN operator (28) is provided the emergency call and provides the tag to the ESN database (14) to obtain the associated civic address.

    Non-transitory computer readable media comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor of a cell phone (32), cause the cell phone (32) to execute a method comprising:monitoring radio frequency, RF, beacon signals for a wireless access point, AP, tag that is associated with a civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and which is generated by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) as a trusted 3 rd party source, wherein the tag and the civic address are stored in an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14) by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) wherein the ISP (24) and the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) communicate tag information over the IP network and wherein the tag was generated by at least one of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and the ISP (24), wherein the tag is not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving, via a database entry provided by the ISP (24), the civic address of a location from where the emergency call is originating;storing the beacon frame parameters including the tag in amemory of the cell phone (32) if a tag is detected;detecting an emergency call being made by the cell phone (32);and embedding the tag in an emergency call stream such that the civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) can be determined by searching a database of known civic addresses of access points and associated tags stored on the internet and maintained by one or more trusted sources;whereby an ESN operator (28) provided with the emergency call uses the tag to obtain the associated civic address from ESN database (14).

    Non-transitory computer readable media as recited in any one of claims 23 to 24, wherein the instructions cause the cell phone (32) to execute a method comprising monitoring a plurality of RF beacon signals, storinga plurality of tags in the memory of the cell phone (32), and embedding multiple tags in the emergency call.

    Non-transitory computer readable storage media comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor of a server, cause the server to carry out the method according to any of claims 17 to 19.

    An emergency location informing method comprising:generating, by an internet service provider, ISP, (24) an emergency mobile positioning, EMP, access point, AP, component (16), transmitting the EMP AP component (16) over internet protocol, IP, storing the EMP AP component (16) in a non-transitory computer readable media of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), communicating, between the EMP AP component (16) and the ISP (24), tag information for generating a tag associated with a civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), wherein the tag is not modifiable after generation and usable for retrieving the civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), providing, to an emergency service number, ESN, database server (14), the tag and civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) by the ISP (24) acting as a trusted 3 rd party source over the IP network, storing in the ESN database server (14) the tag and civic address of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C), embedding, by the EMP AP component (16), the tag into beacon frames of a radio frequency, RF, beacon signal along with other beacon information provided by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) so that the tag forms a part of the RF beacon signal transmitted by the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) monitoring, at an EMP operating system, OS, component (18) incorporated into an OS and executing on a processor of a cell phone (32) the beacon signal of the AP (30A, 30B, 30C) and storing the tag,embedding, by the EMP-OS component (18), the tag in an emergency call to be made from the cell phone (32) towards an emergency mobile positioning, EMP, server (12) over a network comprising at least one of a public switched telephone network, PSTN, a cellular network and an internet protocol, IP, network;receiving, in the EMP server (12), the emergency call and the embedded tag so that the civic address associated with the tag can be retrieved from the ESN database server (14) for determining a location from where the emergency call is originating.
