Apparatus and method for applying labels

Abstract

A method and apparatus enables linered label applicators to use labels on thin liners. Linered labels comprise a composite of an elongate sheet of thin or light-weight temporary liner (42) having a precut label (44) adhered to a low adhesion surface. The cut-out labels on the liner are fed into the linered label applicator. The use of support mechanisms other then vacuum application on rollers enables the use of thinner liner sheets on labels. A die head (702) for cutting or perforating labels comprising adhesive on label stock comprising a die head having at least 80% of its outer surface comprising flat areas (706) between multiple cutting edges (708) on the outer surface and an internal volume (710, 712) in the die head, the internal volume for carrying coolant liquid into and out of the volume so as to cool the outer surface of the die head when the coolant temperature is at least 10?C cooler than the outer surface of the die head.Fig. 3 A method and apparatus enables linered label applicators to use labels on thin liners. 1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A rotating die head (702) for cutting or perforating labels comprising adhesive on label stock, the die head (702) comprising an outer surface comprising flat areas (708) and raised cutting edges (708) above the flat areas, the die head having:a) at least 80% of its outer surface comprising the flat areas (706) between the raised cutting edges (708), b) multiple raised cutting edges on the outer surface, and c) an internal volume (710, 712) in the die head, the rotating die head (702) characterized by the internal volume (710, 712) in the rotating die head enabling transport of carrying coolant liquid into and out of the volume so as to cool the outer surface of the die head when the coolant temperature is at least IO°C cooler than the outer surface of the die head to prevent sticking of adhesive to the cutting edges (708).
  2. 6
A method for forming a cut label (44) on a liner (42) comprising:feeding a web (22) of label material to a cutting station comprising the rotating die head (702) of claim 1 and forming a cut label material having an adhesive face on the cut label material (28);cutting the label material to provide a matrix (50) adjacent a leading edge of the cut label and a trailing edge of the cut label, the distance between the leading edge and the trailing edge defining a length for the cut label (44);cooling the die head by passing coolant through the internal volume of the die head to prevent sticking of adhesive to the cutting edges;stabilizing the leading edge of the label material with respect to the matrix (50) adjacent the leading edge before the trailing edge of the label material leaves the cutting station, the stabilizing being effected without vacuum being distributed over an area comprising at least 50% of the surface area of the cut label;feeding the leading edge of the label material and the matrix adjacent the leading edge of label material into a nip formed between a set of rollers, while the trailing edge of the label is stabilized without vacuum;feeding a web of liner (34) into the set of rollers (24, 28) against the adhesive face.
  3. 9
The method of claims 6, 7, 8 or 9 wherein a stabilizing force is applied by a physical element pressing the leading edge against a surface of a roller.
  4. 10
The method of claims 6, 7, 8 or 9 wherein stabilizing the leading edge is performed with vacuum being applied to the cut label material after being cut by the die head (702). amendment 3 0 JAN 2012 MyiPO__
  5. 11
The method of claims 6, 7, 8 or 9 wherein there is a distance, between a location on the anvil roller (24) where the trailing edge is cut and a stabilizing nip for stabilizing relative movement between the cut label and the matrix, being approximately less than or equal to the length of the label.
  6. 12
A method for forming a cut label (44) on a liner (42) comprising:feeding a web (22) of label material to a cutting station comprising the die head of claim 1 and forming a cut label material (28) having an adhesive face (30) on the cut label material;10 cutting the label material to provide a matrix adjacent a leading edge of the cut label and a trailing edge of the cut label, the distance between the leading edge and the trailing edge defining a length for the cut label;cooling the die head to a temperature equal to or below Tg of the adhesive on the adhesive label to prevent sticking of adhesive to the cutting edges;15 stabilizing the leading edge of the label material with respect to the matrix adjacent the leading edge before the trailing edge of the label material leaves the cutting station, the stabilizing being effected without vacuum being distributed over an area comprising at least 50% of the surface area of the cut label;feeding the leading edge of the label material and the matrix adjacent the leading 20 edge of label material into a nip formed between a set of rollers, while the trailing edge of the label is stabilized without vacuum;feeding a web of liner into the set of rollers against the adhesive face.
