Abstract

A pest control device system (20) includes a plurality of pest control devices (40) and a data collector (32). The system (20) may further include the data collector (32) in the form of a gateway (33) that is connected to a data management server (120) via a computer network (24) along with other gateways (33) in corresponding pest control device groups (30). Each pest control device (40) includes a pest sensor (46) and a wireless communication circuit (50) to transmit information from the corresponding sensor (46). The devices (40) also configure to define a local wireless communication network (36) that can relay the information from one to the next and ultimately to the data collector (32).

    CLAIMS 1. A method, comprising:operating a pest control system (20) comprising a plurality of pest control devices (40) and a data collector (32), the pest control devices (40) each comprising a respective pest sensor (46) and a respective wireless communication circuit (50);wirelessly transmitting sensor infonnation from the respective sensor (46) of a first one of the pest control devices (40) to a second one of the pest control devices (40);and wirelessly providing the sensor information from the second one of the pest control devices (40) to the data collector (32);wherein the pest control system (20) is established by placing the first one of the pest control devices (40) in a first position and providing at the first one of the pest control devices (40) a first output indicating communication between the first one of the pest control devices (40) and the data collector (32), and positioning the second one of the pest control devices (40) in a second position and providing at the second one of the pest control devices (40) a second output indicating direct or indirect communication between the second one of the pest control devices (40) and the data collector (32 ).

    8. The method of any one of claims I to 7, which comprises:providing the data collector (32) as a form of gateway (33);interfacing the gateway (33) to a computer network (24);and providing a user access to data gathered with pest control devices (40) through the computer network (24).

    10. The method of any one of claims I to 9, which comprises:providing one or more of the pest control devices (40) with a respective bait (44) for a rodent;and detecting rodent activity with the respective pest sensor (46) of at least one of the one or more of the pest control devices (40).

The method of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the respective wireless communication circuit (50) of the first one of the pest control devices (40) is out of communication range with the data collector (32), and the relaying of the sensor information from the second one of the pest control devices (40) comprises sending the sensor information through at least a third one of the pest control devices (40) before the sensor information reaches the data collector (32),

A method, comprising:providing a pest control system (20) comprising a data collector (32) and several pest control devices (40), the pest control devices (40) each comprising a respective sensor (46), and a respective wireless communication circuit (50);activating a network installation mode of a selected one of the pest control devices (40);during the network installation mode, attempting to establish a wireless communication link with a pest control system communication network (36);PI 2011001025 if the wireless communication link is established, providing a first type of output to an operator;and if the wireless communication link is not established, providing a second type of output to the operator.

    20. The method of any one of claims 14 to 19, wherein the selected one of the pest control devices (40) comprises an operator activated switch (76), the first type of output comprises a first illumination arrangement, and the second type of output comprises a second illumination arrangement.

    22. The method of any one of claims 14 to 21, wherein at least one of the pest control devices (40) comprises a respective bait (44) to attract one or more species of pest.

An apparatus, comprising:a pest control device (40), comprising: a pest sensor (46) operable to provide one or more signals representative of pest detection;circuitry (43) comprising: a wireless communication transceiver (51) coupled to the pest sensor (46) to transmit information corresponding to the pest detection, a component (77) responsive to a magnetic field proximate to the pest control device (40) to operate the transceiver (52) in an installation mode, and a controller (70) to execute operating logic to establish a wireless communication link with one or more other devices during the installation mode;and PI 2011001025 an indicator (80) coupled to the circuitry (43) to provide a first operator output indicative of establishment of the wireless communication link, and a second operator output indicative of failure to establish the wireless communication link.

    26. The apparatus of any one of claims 23 to 25, wherein the component (77) comprises at least one of a hall effect device and a magnetoresistor.

    27. The apparatus of any one of claims 23 to 26, further comprising a number of other pest control devices (40) and a data collector (32), the data collector (32) comprising means for wirelessly communicating with the pest control device (40) and the other pest control devices (40).

    30. The apparatus of any one of claims 23 to 29, wherein the circuitry (43) comprises a processing device and logic executable by the processing device to determine and store PI 2011001025 information representative of a wireless communication pathway through the one or more other devices.

A system, comprising:a first pest control device group (30) comprising a plurality of wireless communication nodes, each of the wireless communication nodes (42) being provided with a corresponding pest sensor (46);and a first gateway (33) to receive sensor data from the corresponding sensor (46) of each of the wireless communication nodes (42), one or more of the wireless communication nodes (42) comprising a respective controller (70) to execute operating logic to define a wireless communication network (36) between the wireless communication nodes (42) and to provide an output to an operator indicating establishment of a wireless communication network (36), the wireless communication network (36) comprising a first subset of the wireless communication nodes to relay sensor information to the first gateway (33) from a second subset of the wireless communication nodes, the second subset being different than the first subset. \ \ PI 2011001025

The system of any one of claims 33 to 36, further comprising:a computer network (24) in communication with the first gateway (33);and a data management server (120) in communication with the computer network (24) to receive and store the sensor data;and a user access client connected to the computer network (24) to access information stored inthe data management server (120).

The system of any one of claims 33 to 37, wherein the data management server (120) is structured to execute programming instructions that define:a database to store data received from the first gateway (33), a notification routine to provide notice of one or more conditions indicated by the sensor data, a report generation routine, and a data analysis routine.

The system of any one of claims 33 to 38, further comprising:a second pest control device group (30) comprising a plurality of other wireless communication nodes (42) each coupled to a different sensor (46);and a second gateway (33) to receive different sensor data over another wireless communication network (24) defined between the other wireless communication nodes (42).

A pest control device, comprising:a respective sensor (46), a respective wireless communication circuit (50), a controller (70) to define a respective wireless communication node (42) and at least partially define a wireless communication network (36) with other wireless communication nodes (42) in which a first subset of the nodes (42) relays sensor information to a data collector (32) from a second subset of the nodes (42), and a visual indicator (80) on the pest control device (40) operable to be selectively illuminable.

    45. The device of any one of claims 42 to 44, further comprising a magnetic field responsive component (77) to trigger an installation mode of operation of the pest control device (40) in response to a magnetic field proximate thereto.
