Abstract

A NOVEL DUNNAGE-CREATING MACHINE AND METHODOLOGY CHARACTERIZED BY VARIOUS FEATURES INCLUDING, INTER ALIA, A MODULAR CONSTRUCTION, EASIER ACCESS TO INTERIOR COMPONENTS, AND A LOW COST CUTTING ASSEMBLY. THE MACHINE COMPRISES FRONT THE REAR UNITS HAVING SEPARATE HOUSINGS. THE HOUSING OF THE REAR UNIT INCLUDES AN OUTER SHELL HAVING A CONVERGING CHUTE SURROUNDING A SHAPING MEMBER OVER WHICH SHEET-LIKE STOCK MATERIAL IS DRAWN TO FORM THE STOCK MATERIAL INTO A THREE-DIMENSIONAL SHAPE. THE FRONT UNIT INCLUDES IN THE HOUSING THEREOF A FEED MECHANISM FOR DRAWING THE STOCK MATERIAL OVER THE SHAPING MEMBER AND STITCHING THE SHAPED MATERIAL TO FORM A STRIP OF DUNNAGE PRODUCT. THE FRONT UNIT ALSO INCLUDES A MANUAL CUTTING MECHANISM FOR CUTTING THE STRIP TO FORM CUT PIECES, WHICH MANUAL CUTTING MECHANISM INCLUDES A READILY REPLACEABLE BLADE ASSEMBLY.

    What is claimed is:1. A cushioning conversion machine for converting sheet-like stock material into 5 a relatively low density cushioning dunnage product, compnsing a shaping member over which the sheet-like stock material is drawn lo form the stock materia] into a three-dimensional shape, a feed mechanism (80) for drawing the stock material over the shaping member, and an outer shell (35, 44) having a wall writh an exterior surface forming the exterior of the machine and an 10 interior surface forming a converging chute (350) cooperative w'ith said shaping member to roll edges of the stock material to form lateral pillow-like portions, said shell including a base portion and a removable cover portion.

    A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 1, w'herein said 15 shaping member is carried by said removable cover portion.

    A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 1, for use with stock material having multiple plies, w'herein said base portion has laterally spaced apart side walls, and a plurality of separator members are mounted to and 20 extend between said side walls for use in separating the plies of the multiply stock material.

    A cushioning conversion machine for converting sheet-like stock materia] into a relatively low density cushioning dunnage product, comprising a shaping member over which the sheet-like stock material is drawn to form the stock material into a three-dimensional shape, a feed mechanism (80) for drawing the stock material over the shaping member, and a cutting assembly (81) for 10 cutting the cushioning dunnage product into cut sections, said cutting assembly (81) including a blade assembly (119)and an operator assembly for operating said blade assembly, said blade assembly (119)including a guide motor (87) (79) and a pair of relatively movable blades mounted on said guide motor (87) (79) for relative movement towards and away from one another, 15 and said guide motor (87) (79) is removably mounted to said machine independently of said operator assembly whereby said blade assembly (119)can be removed without having to remove said operator assembly, and wherein said operator assembly includes a handle member movable in a first direction to move said blades together and in a second direction to move said 20 blades apart

    A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 7, wherein said operator assembly includes a slotted crank connected to said handle for rotation in opposite directions in response to movement of said handle in said 25 first and second directions, respectively, and said blades include at least one moving blade mounted on said guide motor (87) (79) for movement towards and away from the other blade, and a pin connected to said moving blade and engaged in a slot in said slotted crank for movement of said moving blade in response to rotation of said slotted crank.     A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 8, wherein the slot in said slotted crank is open ended to permit removal of said pin in a direction parallel to said slot when said blade assembly (119) is removed from said 5 machine.

    A cushioning conversion machine for converting a sheet-like stock material into a cushioning product, said machine comprising conversion assemblies and a shell enclosing at least some ofthe conversion assemblies:PI 95002108 the conversion assemblies including a forming assembly (305) which forms the stock material into a three-dimensional strip and a feed assembly (80) for advancing the stock material through the forming assembly (305);the forming assembly (305) including a conversion chute (350)which contacts the stock material and moves edges of the stock material inward;said shell having a wall with an exterior surface forming the exterior of the 10 machine and an interior surface forming the conversion chute.

    20 activating the feed assembly (80) to advance the sheet-like stock material through the forming assembly (305);and forming the sheet-like stock material into a three-dimensional strip in the forming assembly (305), said forming step including having the conversion 25 chute, formed by the interior surface of the shell, contact the stock material and move edges of the stock material inward.

A cushioning conversion machine for converting stock material into a 15 relatively low density cushioning dunnage product, comprising a shaping member over which the stock material is drawn to form the stock material into a three-dimensional shape, a feed mechanism (80) for drawing the stock material over the shaping member, and a cutting assembly (81) for cutting the cushioning dunnage product into cut sections, including a blade assembly 20 (119) and an operator assembly for operating said blade assembly, said blade assembly (119) including a pair of relatively movable blades and said operator assembly including a handle member movable in a first direction to move said blades together and in a second direction to move said blades apart, said handle is movable in said second direction to a feed position at which said 25 blades are relatively moved apart sufficiently to permit passage of the dunnage product therebetween and in said first direction to a cut complete position sufficient to cut the dunnage product to form a cut piece, said feed mechanism (80) includes at least one rotatable member for engaging and advancing the stock material, a drive motor (87) for driving said one rotatable member, and a PI 95002108 control member operatively connected to said drive motor (87) for controlling energization and de-energization of said drive motor (87). and said control member (150) is functionally related to said handle such that movement of said 5 handle in said second direction to said feed position effects energization of said drive motor (87) and movement of said handle in said first direction effects deenergization of said drive motor (87).

A cushioning conversion machine as set forth in claim 29 wherein said ] 0 handle is connected to means movable in response to movement of said handle for actuating said control member (150) to energize said motor (87) when said means for moving is moved by said handle to a first position, and resilient means is provided for resiliently biasing said means for moving away from said first position to deactuate said control member (150) if said handle 15 is released when said means for moving is in said first position.

A method of converting a stock material into a cushioning product, said method comprising the steps of (29) providing a stock material, (30) moving an operating handle of a conversion machine in a first direction to cause the conversion machine to produce a continuous strip of a relatively low density dunnage product, and (31) moving the operating handle in a reverse 25 direction to manually actuate a cutting assembly (81) of the conversion machine to provide a cut piece of the dunnage product.

A method of making cut sections of a cushioning product, said method comprising the steps of:supplying a stock material;and providing a cushioning conversion machine including a forming assembly (305) which forms the stock material into a three-dimensional strip of dunnage, a stock supply assembly, positioned upstream of the forming assembly (305), which supplies the stock material to PI 95002108 the forming assembly, a feed assembly (80), positioned down-stream of tbe stock supply assembly, which supplies the stock material to the forming assembly (305). a cutting assembly (81), positioned downstream of the 5 forming assembly (305), which cuts the strip of dunnage into sections of a desired length;and an operating assembly including a handle member which when moved to a first position activates the feed assembly (80) and which when moved to a second position activates the cutting assembly (81);moving tbe handle member to a first position to activate the feed assembly 10 (80) to supply stock material to the forming assembly (305) to form a strip of dunnage;moving tbe handle member to the second position to activate the cutting assembly to cut the strip of dunnage into sections of a desired length to make 15 cut sections of a cushioning product.

A stitching assembly adapted for use in a cushioning conversion machine which converts stock material into a cushioning product said stitching assembly comprising:a motor (87), first and second shafts, a mounting assembly which mount the 10 first and second shafts to the motor (87) in such a manner that the first shafts is movable transversely towards and away and from the second shafts so as to define a minimum set distance between the first and second shafts, and first and second rotating toothed-wheel gear members carried on the first and 15 second shafts, respectively;the mounting assembly positioning the first and second gear member in a meshed condition for coining stock material passing therebetween and resiliently urging the first shaft and the first gear member carried thereon 20 toward the second shaft and second gear member so as to apply a pinch force to the stock material;the mounting assembly including a first tie member movably connected to the said first shaft and extending transversely with respect to the first shaft and 25 having one end supported in a fixed transverse position relative to the motor (87) (79): a first adjustable stop on the first tie member which is selectively adjustable toward and away form the first shaft, and a first spring member interposed between the first shaft and the first adjustable stop about said first tie member having a first end connected to the said first shaft and a second PI 95002108 end connected to said first adjustable shaft for resiliency biasing the first shaft towards the second shaft so that said pinch force is adjustable without changing said set minimum distance between the first and second shafts.

A cushioning conversation machine for converting stock material into a cushioning product, said machine comprising a motor (87) (79), a stock supply assembly and a conversion assembly, mounted to the motor (87) (79), 5 w hich converts the stock material into a three-dimensional strip of dunnage, wherein:the conversion assembly includes first and second shafts, a mounting assembly which mounts the shafts to the motor (87) (79) in such a manner that 10 the first shaft movable transversely towards and away from the second shaft, first and second rotating members carried by the first and second shafts, respectively, for engaging the stock material therebetween, and means for rotating the rotating member: 15 the mounting assembly resiliently urges the first shaft towards the second shaft and thus the first rotating member towards the second rotating member whereby the rotating members apply a pinch force to the stock material as it is engaged therebetween, and the mounting assembly includes an adjustment system which provides selective adjustment of the pinch force applied to the 20 stock material without changing a set minimum distance between the shafts.
