"improved method and apparatus for generating an aerosol"

Abstract

AN AEROSOL IS FORMED BY SUPPLYING A MATERIAL IN LIQUID FORM TO A FLOW PASSAGE (23, 123) AND HEATING THE FLOW PASSAGE SUCH THAT THE MATERIAL VOLATIZES AND EXPANDS OUT OF AN OPEN END (25, 125) OF THE FLOW PASSAGE. THE VOLATIZED MATERIAL COMBINES WITH AMBIENT AIR SUCH THAT VOLATIZED MATERIAL CONDENSES TO FORM THE AEROSOL. AN APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR GENERATING SUCH AN AEROSOL ARE DISCLOSED WHEREIN THE APPARATUS MAY INCLUDE AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE SLEEVE AT AN OPEN END OF THE FLOW PASSAGE, AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE FLOW PASSAGE AND / OR A SPACER CHAMBER (38). THE VOLATILIZED MATERIAL MAY CONTAIN A VOLATILIZED SOLUTE AND VEHICLE SUCH THAT THE RESULTING AEROSOL PARTICLE SIZES OF THE SOLUTE AND THE VEHICLE ARE EITHER DIFFERENT OR THE SAME. FIGURE 1

  1. 1
Cl AIMS 1. An aerosol generator (21, 121), comprising' a flow passage (23, 123) having a first open end (25, 125); and a heater (27, 127), the heater, in use ofthe generator, increasing the temperature of the flowpassage (23. 123) sufficient to volatilize material in a liquid form in the flow passage (23, 123) such that the volatilized material expands out of the first open end (25, 1 25) of the flow passage (23, 123) to form an aerosol; and an electrically conductive material (26) at flic first open end (25) of the flow passage (23); characterised in that the aerosol generator (21, 121) further comprises:a spacer chamber (38) connected to the first open end (25) of the flow passage ¢23) such that the aerosol parses through the spacer chamber (38) and exits out of an open end of the spacer chamber (38). flic spacer chamber (38) being effective, in use of the generator, to increase the aerosol particle mass median aerosol diameter.
