Abstract

AN INFORMATION RECORDING MEDIUM (100) SUITABLE FOR OPTICAL DISCS SUBH AS DVD-RAM IS PROVIDED FOR INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF DATA AS OBJECTS IN DIFFERENT KINDS OF AV FORMATS. ALSO APPARATUS IS PROVIDED FOR DATA RECORDING AND PLAYING TO THE MEDIUM. THE MEDIUM (100) STORES MANAGEMENT INFORMATION INCLUDING PROGRAM CHAIN INFORMATION (PGC INFORMATION)(20,700) DEFINING THE PLAYBACK ORDER OF THE OBJECTS, AND OBJECT INFORMATION (80) CONTAINING INFORMATION RELEVANT TO THE OBJECTS. THE OBJECT INFORMATION (80) HAS GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE OBJECT, ATTRIBUTE INFORMATION AND A MAP ASSOCIATING A PLAYBACK TIME POINT OF THE OBJECT WITH AN ADDRESS ON THE OPTICAL DISC OF A COMPONENT OF THE OBJECT TO BE PLAYED. THE PGC INFORMATION (50,70) HAS CELL INFORMATION (60) INCLUDING INFORMATION (60A) ABOUT TYPE OF OBJECT, IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION.     A reproducing apparatus for reproducing at least one object stored on an information medium (100), each object comprising a plurality of object units each having an address indicative of a location on the information medium (100), the apparatus comprising:

    10 a drive (1911,2007) operable to read the at least one object and management information for managing reproduction of the at least one object from the information medium (100);a decoder (2004) operable to decode the;read at least one object to obtain data to be presented;and a controller (1902, 2002) operable to control the drive and the decoder, wherein the management information includes object information (80) provided for each object and program chain information (50, 70) that includes a sequence of cell information 20 (60), each cell information (60) indicating a playback section of one of the at least one object as a cell and including playback section information (60c, 60d) indicating start and end portions of a part or whole of the associated object, wherein each object is of one of two or more types, the two or more types including a type 25 indicative of a movie object and a type indicative of a still picture object, the cell information (60) further includes type information (60a) indicating a type of the object of the associated cell, the object information (80) includes a plurality of kinds of information in a form depending on the type of the corresponding object, the plurality of kinds of information including map information (80c) for obtaining an address of each object unit, 30 and wherein the controller (1902, 2002) retrieves at least one of the plurality of kinds of information included in the object information (80) based on the type of the object conesponding to each of the cells defined by the sequence of cell information (60) to be reproduced, and controls the drive to read a part or the whole of the at least one object in accordance with the sequence of cell information (60) to be reproduced by using the 5 retrieved information, 10.
