USE OF INTERNET NETWORK TECHNOLOGY TO
REGISTER WIRELESS CUSTOMERS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the use of Internet network technology to register wireless access clients.
Background of the Invention
The previous application describes a cellular wireless Internet access system which operates in the 2 gigahertz band range to provide high data rates to fixed and portable wireless users. These users connect to the nearest base stations, which in turn communicate with the integrated network controllers, which are then connected to the Internet. Said wireless implementation refers to an access network by UMTS standards (Universal Service of
Mobile Phone) and the subset UTRAN (Network
Universal Terrestrial Radio Access).
In order to gain service on a cellular wireless network of the similar types as above, a sales representative at a retail location generally takes the customer's credit information history, etc.
That information is used to create an account with a cellular service provider, with customer information stored in the service provider's home location record (HLR) or other customer database. Then a SIM card (Subscriber Identity Mode) is associated with the account and placed inside the cellular terminal (usually a mobile phone or wireless device).
Internet) .
However, both of the above techniques are cumbersome, require action by the retail provider or network service provider, and create a time delay before a new customer can use the service. Therefore, it is desired to allow the user to self-register through a wireless system like the previous one to gain access to Internet services.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with a first aspect of the invention, a method of registering a user in a wireless Internet access system is provided, as claimed in claim 1.
<img file="MXPA02003157A_D0005.tif" />
<img file="MXPA02003157A_D0006.tif" />
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an adaptation of the user's wireless equipment for use with a wireless access network system, as claimed in claim 10.
In accordance with a third aspect of the invention, a wireless access network system is provided, as claimed in claim 11.
In accordance with a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a computer program element comprising computer program means for performing user registration functions in a wireless access network system, as claimed in claim 17.
In a preferred form of the invention, each user has a personal computer (PC) and each user uses wireless user equipment (UE) generally with a directly connected antenna to communicate wirelessly with a cellular network controller . A user purchases the User Equipment along with magnetic or optical (CD) storage media that has predetermined software for use in registration. A magician (application that helps the user to execute a task efficiently) in the predetermined software, controls the PC and its equipment of the connected wireless user.
Under the magician's direction on the PC, the subscriber terminal is instructed to communicate wirelessly with the wireless network. Because the client has not previously been registered with the wireless access network operator, he is only admitted to the network as an anonymous subscriber and is allowed to communicate only with the network operator's registration network server. This is accomplished through the use of a new special user ID and password previously programmed into the
CD. A communication session is established between the
PC, user equipment and network server from the network operator record (via wireless access) and enter a credit card, other personal details and the type of service required. The registry network server contains a list of the ISPs that can be allowed that can be accessed in the system. This list is used for subsequent accesses, after registration is complete. The user enters a
Preferred user ID and if authorized by the registry server, the client is assigned a user ID and password. The same information is transferred to the PC and to the access to the home location register of the network operator (which contains the database of authorized customers).
Subsequently, the subscriber is authorized to use the network and can establish normal connections in the wireless network and with the ISPs that can be allowed (Internet service providers) for an Internet session and access to any part of the Internet allowed for ISPs.
Brief Description of Drawings
FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an Internet system illustrating the present invention.
Figures 2A and 2B form a flow chart showing the operation of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
Referring now to figure 1, two users of the Internet access system are illustrated with numbers 21 and 22, with Teams of the
User known as User Equipment (EU) 21 'and
22 'connected by a typical data connection to the computer using RS232, USB or Ethernet. The personal computer has a CD compact disc drive or similar media input device, on which a special compact disc, or similar media, is placed that contains the software including a wizard (that is, the system procedure instructions for registration). Both the UE and the CD are purchased and purchased from a retail outlet or by mail. In either case, both the CD and the UE are at the user's location.
Wireless access UE 21 and user 22, are described in the previous application, and are a part of a UMTS / UTRAN system which communicates by different wireless techniques (a new specific one is described in the previous application), in a way wireless, as indicated by symbol 23 with a
Integrated Network Controller (INC) 24. Said controller can be connected, either by cable or otherwise to an Internet Protocol (IP) network.
31. As explained in the previous pending application, the Integrated Network Controller 24 includes an RNC or radio network controller 26 which controls and distributes the resources of the radio network and provides the reliable supply of traffic to the user between a base station (described in the previous pending request) and the User Equipment (UE) and eventually, the Integrated Network Controller

A description of RADIUS is provided in RFC2138, from the User System for Marking
Remote Access (RADIUS) by C. Rigney, and associates,
April 1997, which is available on the website 5 WWW.IETF.ORG.
In all cases of communication of a user device 21 or 22 through the Protocol Network
Internet, illustrated as 31, verification is carried out by the user equipment (UE) pointing out the client's wireless access verification information, which is passed over the air to the Integrated Network Controller 24 which requests the RADIUS server verification of the user ID (identification) and temporary password, as illustrated by the dotted line 41. The RADIUS server used is the RADIUS Verification server of the
Access Operators 34, which communicates with the
Integrated Network Controller over the IP network using UDP / IP protocols with additional protocol layers for security reasons.
In the case of a new user, a new user ID and a temporary password, previously programmed in the software of the CD for the
RADIUS Access Verification Server
Operator 34 through INC 24. The Server
RADIUS Verification of Operator Access 34 recognizes the user as a new user and communicates a set of protocol filters to INC 24 resulting in a PPP (Point to Point Protocol) being established between the user's PC, and the
Operator Access Registry Server 36 through the user's 2-Layer Tunnel Protocol link 32 from access to any other service. The Access Registry Server of the
Operator 36 is connected to the subscriber's account manager and billing system 37.
Therefore, the above constitutes the anonymous session link where a general or unverified user can still gain access to the wireless operator's access log server for the purpose of registering a new user. The following legend indicates the different trajectories. An authorized UMTS access operator 33 provides the special servers 34 and 36 together with the billing system 37.
The flow charts of figure 2, effectively describe the operation shown in the block diagram system of figure 1. After the start, in step 1, the user buys the equipment which has been defined as the user equipment (UE) and a CD compact disc drive with the correct software and wizard procedure installed on it. A manual is also provided. The CD also contains, in addition to the installation software, the required software operators. When the user makes a user purchase of the above, the user's residence can be reviewed through the use of the user's zip code coverage or other geographic information. All this information can be provided by accessing the network of
Internet.
In step 2, the User Equipment is connected to the PC. This connection can be USB, Ethernet, RS
232, etc., as illustrated in figure 1.
In step 3, the User Equipment is installed on the PC. This is done through the wizard software and will support all specified connection interfaces, ie RS 232, USB or Ethernet.
Steps 3a and 3b are precautionary reviews. In step 3a, the UE installation software checks that the modem is properly connected and operational. If a return is not made, due to the installation of a failed process, designated by step A, a cell finder is performed in the next step
3b. And, here the quality of the signal received from the User Equipment is measured, and reported to the user through the installation wizard. Again, if the signal quality fails, a return to the start is made. Indeed, registration will not be possible.
In step 4, the user's computer under standard care mode (AT) sends a new user ID and temporary password to the UE. Then in step 5, the UE sends this verification information over the air to RNC 26 which is passed on to the RADIUS client 29 and SGSN 27, which requests the RADIUS server 34 for the new user ID and temporary user password new.
In step 6, the RADIUS server 34 responds with acceptance plus a set of protocol filters to be applied in SGSN 27 for traffic for this specific registration session. Protocol filters serve to obstruct this user's access to other Internet services or sites other than the previously determined registry server 36. The RADIUS server also details the
ISP, in this case as ISP in the network access operator, to connect the access operator UMTS 33 and the server of the registry network 36.
Subsequently, in step 7, the
2 Layer Tunnel Protocol Access 28 in the
Radio Network Controller 24 prepares, as illustrated in the dotted line 32 of figure 1, and establishes a communication tunnel with LNS 30 and

<td>5 (protocol</td><td>knitted</td><td>to</td><td>point). At</td><td>step 8,</td><td>the</td>
<td>software </td><td>marker</td><td>of</td><td>the PC proceeds</td><td>so</td><td>to</td>

<img file="MXPA02003157A_D0010.tif" />
start a PPP session which is passed to the LNS through the 2-Layer Tunnel Protocol for verification. In step 9, the LNS then terminates the different protocols used within the PPP to prepare the connection and validates a user ID for a new user and a password passed by the
PPP. This comprises a second request to the server
RADIUS 34 represented by search path 41.
In step 10, once the dialer is connected to the personal computer, PC, through PPP, the wizard installation activates the PC's web browser, which will then download a web page for Server registration of the Network of
Registration 36. Subsequently, in step 11, the user is notified to enter their preferred user ID, password, credit card details, personal details and type of service required. A list of ISPs supported by the
Access Operator that can be allowed, as well as its specific registration software, if required.
The information available on this type of services is provided through the registration website. In step 12, when the user has entered the appropriate data and clicked to send the information, it is sent to the registration server. In step 13, the registration server verifies the information entered (including credit card authorization, if required) and generates a permanent password. If the required user ID has already been assigned to the user, you will either be given an option or asked to enter a new user ID. In step 14 the user is informed of the successful registration through the web page downloaded from the Registration Network Server that contains the user's name and permanent password, and the RADIUS 34 server is updated with the appropriate user information and the selected username and password for wireless access. All of this is saved on the PC for future use. Finally, in step 15, the Internet registration session is terminated.
Now the user is registered with the Access Operator, assuming that the credit reviews have been successful, and the wireless access to
Normal internet may be required with a new session.
In the case of the present invention, the User Equipment (UE) of the new client sends identification information, which is a new user ID, and a new user password when requesting connection to the wireless access network.
This is earned on a special anonymous connection. And as explained above, through protocol filters, the connection can be restricted in an appropriate way.
<td>In this way,</td><td>the</td><td>customers can</td><td>to buy</td><td>its</td>
<td>user equipment</td><td>of a</td><td>establishment</td><td>sales</td><td>to the</td>
<td>retail. So</td><td>they</td><td>will connect your</td><td>Team A</td><td>its</td>
personal computer and may use it to gain Internet access for the purpose of registering themselves and creating their account online. This user-initiated registration is possible through the use of the network-based Internet registration process described above.
