INSULATION SYSTEM ii ·. i ·· '. .
AND INTRAORAL DENTAL SUCTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to the field of dental mouthpieces. More specifically, the present invention relates to intraoral dental suction and isolation nozzles.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Dental mouthpieces, dental hygienists, and dental assistants currently use various mouthpieces in the dental field. In the past, a dental patient was treated by a traditional two-person team consisting of a dental professional and a dental assistant. Furthermore, dental treatment can be provided by the team using many different types of dental equipment and materials. Dental equipment and supplies may include items such as an intraoral mirror, a bite block, a low-speed suction ejector, a high-speed suction ejector, gauze, cotton rolls, and a mouthpiece. Each item of dental equipment can be used for different purposes, although some can be used in combination for some types of dental services. As such, a dental professional seeking to provide such services
Ref.:262115
<img file="MX354381B_D0008.tif" />
Dentists may need the use of multiple items of dental equipment. An important role of the dental assistant is therefore to help the dental professional coordinate the use of these multiple items of equipment and different materials.
Therefore, there is a need in the art for improved systems and methods to provide dental services in a more efficient, comfortable, and safe manner to the dental patient.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Modalities of the present invention may include a mouthpiece that can be connected to a high suction dental adapter in order to assist dental personnel during dental procedures through the side of the chair, hand suction and isolation. The nozzle may comprise a main body part, a cheek retractor part and a suction connector part. In some embodiments, the main body part, cheek retractor part, and suction connector part (and subparts thereof) can be molded in one piece, preferably by injection molding. In an exemplary embodiment, the nozzle can be made of a material that is flexible, translucent, conducive to injection molding, highly heat resistant, and autoclavable. The material can include silicone. Because the
<img file="MX354381B_D0009.tif" />
nozzle can be made of a very heat resistant and autoclavable material, the nozzle can be reusable.
The main body part may comprise an enclosed void composed of an anterior wall, a posterior wall, and a side wall between the anterior and posterior walls. The side wall can be drilled with a plurality of holes. Such perforations can constitute a mesh. Additional perforations can be located in the anterior and posterior walls. The main body part may further include a slit along a longitudinal central axis in the anterior wall. The openings (eg, perforations and slit) allow air, fluids and small debris to be sucked from the patient's mouth, through the openings to the inside, and to the suction connector part to a suction source. Since the mouthpiece is made of a flexible and resilient material (eg. silicone), the mouthpiece can be folded when placed in a patient's mouth to conform to the shape of the mouth. When properly positioned, the suction connector portion can protrude from one side of the patient's mouth, while the main body is against the back of the patient's mouth, and the cheek retractor presses against the patient's cheek in the opposite side of the patient's mouth.
·. .Λ>,
The main body may further include a projecting bridge structure on the inner surface ...... of "the 'wall' behind. The bridge structure can protrude from the inner waveform surface with ridges and depressions. The ridges provide a plurality of points of contact with the anterior wall to keep the anterior wall separate from the posterior wall during suction. Meanwhile, the depressions provide voids that allow air, fluids, and small debris to be sucked through the bridge structure.

patient. The flexibility of the material used to form the mouthpiece allows for some flexing when placed in the patient's mouth. The material, however, is resilient enough for the cheek retractor portion to press against the interior of the patient's cheek, the pressure being sufficient to move the cheek away from the patient's teeth.
A copy of main body 110 copy /0When ^ is placed in a mouth, it may include a front wall facing the front of the mouth (eg, the slit side 17 0) and a rear wall facing the back of the mouth. The two walls can be connected to an upper wall and a lower wall forming a body that is at least partially enclosed.
Upper can be used in this description to refer to the side that rests against the roof of a patient's mouth when placed therein, and lower can be used to refer to the side that rests against the floor of the patient's mouth. The top and bottom sides can be formed identically, which can allow the nozzle to change orientation so that the top side can appear as the bottom side and vice versa, in the new orientation. When in use, the respective sides of the main body part 110 can serve to protect and separate the top of the mouth and the bottom of the mouth / tongue. Furthermore, the main body part 110 can also serve to protect the back of the mouth (eg throat and respiratory tract) from falling debris.
Much of the main body portion 110 of the mouthpiece may be in the form of a straight arrowhead or shield whose base generally conforms to the intraoral shape.
<img file="MX354381B_D0011.tif" />
from the mouth of a patient. Different size mouthpieces can be provided for different size mouths of adults and children. Part of the base side of the arrowhead can be formed with thicker walls than the rest of the main body. The thickening can provide additional stability.
Furthermore, the main body part 110 of the mouthpiece can include a plurality of holes 140 distributed along the upper and lower sides of the anterior and posterior walls to aid in the suction of water, saliva, and debris from the oral cavity. In some embodiments, a set of holes can also form a mesh along the walls of the top and bottom edges. Figure 4 is a close up view of an exemplary mesh wall in an exemplary nozzle.
At the narrow end of the arrowhead connecting to the cheek retractor part 130, the main body part 110 may include a rectangular part. Narrower than the base of the arrowhead, the rectangle may additionally include a reinforcing bar (or stability bar) 150 (described in more detail below) and may be at least partially pierced by a slit
170 (described in more detail below) inside the hollow of the main body part 110.
Stability bar 150 can be a protrusion or a
<img file="MX354381B_D0012.tif" />
otherwise thickened area which reinforces the stable rectangular part and helps to shape this regionr to the posterior intraoral form of a patient's mouth. FIG. 6A is a close-up view of an exemplary stability bar 150 in an exemplary nozzle. FIG. 6B is a cross-sectional view of the exemplary reinforcing bar in the cheek retractor connector portion of FIG. 6A.
In some embodiments, the rectangular shaped internal reinforcing bar or stability 150 may be located distal to the internal 180 wave-like bridge structure and connected to the inner and rear surface of the main body and the rectangular portion. Stability bar 150 may be located in the area where a placed mouthpiece begins to wrap from the lingual side of the most posterior mandibular tooth, around the distal side of the most posterior tooth, and to the anterior side of the most posterior mandibular tooth, aiding that way to conform the mouthpiece to the general intraoral shape of a patient's mouth.
Various modes of the nozzle may further include a longitudinal open slit 170 that extends approximately two-thirds of the main body on the anterior surface. Running along the center of the main body through the rectangle and most of the arrowhead, the slit 17 0 can assist in

assist in cleaning and maintenance.
Additionally, the main body of the nozzle can include a bridge structure 180 on an inner surface to ensure that the anterior and posterior surfaces remain separate during suction. Figure 1E is a cross-sectional view of the nozzle in which the bridge structure 180 is illustrated. Figure 5 is a close-up view of the bridge structure 180 without the surrounding walls of the main body part. Bridge structure 180 can be formed as a wave-like protrusion that generally corresponds to the distance between the anterior and posterior walls that extend substantially (eg 1 mm) the full distance at its ridge and substantially flush with the surface in its depression. In some embodiments, the bridge structure 180 can be located centered on the main body portion 110 of the nozzle. The voids (or depressions) between the waves of the bridge structure 180 assist in the suction driven transfer of water and saliva to the suction connector portion 120 and ultimately to the central suction vacuum. In some embodiments, the bridge structure 180 may follow the shape of a logo (eg, an arrowhead or shield).

Suction connector part 120 can be oval in shape and also connect to main body part 110. Suction connector part 120 can be formed with thicker walls than main body part 110 and configured to connect to a High suction vacuum adapter and help transfer water, saliva and debris from the oral cavity to the external adapter for removal. The suction connector portion 120 may also include an internal stop to assist sliding of the nozzle over the adapter to a desired depth. The suction connector portion 120 may additionally have a notched concave outer region 210 corresponding to a removable strap so that when the strap is in place, the outer walls of the strap and the remainder of the connector portion may be flush.
The cheek retractor part 130 is illustrated as a hammer head distal region, which can be connected to the main body part 110. Figure 7A is a close-up view of an exemplary cheek retractor part 130 in a nozzle copy. FIG. 7B is a cross-sectional view of the exemplary cheek retractor portion 130 of FIG. 7A.
The nozzle can be used with a 160 mouth gag, as illustrated in Figures 1A-1E (with a 160 mouth gag) Λ '.....

And Figures 2A-2E (illustrated without mouth gag 160) i '- Erere Figures 3A-3E provide different views ... of C CTeerdr · wr * · mouth gag exemplary 160. Detachable strap 310 can be attached to the mouth gag 160, which can be used to hold a patient's mouth and teeth open. In this regard, the suction connector part 120 may additionally have an external pin 220 (Figure 2C) protruding from the rear side of the suction connector part 120. The pin 220 can correspond and serve to connect with an opening in the mouthpiece 160. The mouthpiece 160 can be reinforced with the presence of the pin 220 in the opening, thereby resulting in a more crush resistant, almost incompressible and stable mouthpiece 160 . In some embodiments, the suction connector portion 120 may further have a cutout 23 0 (eg. , which may be in the form of a logo) which provides additional interlocking with a corresponding protrusion (eg, which may also be in the form of a logo) on an external high suction vacuum adapter.
Mouthpiece 160 can be made of thickened injection molded silicone material in one piece with an elastic strap corresponding to the circumference of the suction connector part. Mouthpiece 160 has an internal rectangular shaped female groove designed to fit snugly with the external rectangular shaped pin 220 of the suction connector portion 120 of the nozzle. Mouth gaps can be made in different 'sizes' for mouths of different sizes. Because the mouth gag and mouthpiece are detachable from each other, different sizes of each can be mixed and matched as needed for a particular patient's mouth.
The nozzle, as described in this description, can be used with an autoclavable one-piece high suction vacuum adapter. The high suction vacuum body adapter can be made of a single homogeneous material. With a one-lever design, the vacuum adapter can operate in the same way as all current high-suction vacuum evacuators and saliva ejectors to control the removal of water, saliva, and debris from the oral cavity to the source of external vacuum. The single lever can be designed to control the removal of water, saliva, and debris from the main body enclosed at least partially thus through a single large exhaust duct within the suction connector portion.
