CLADDING PIPE WINDOW ASSEMBLY
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to a casing window assembly and to methods of installing the casing window assembly.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Wells are typically drilled using a drill string with a drill bit secured at the lower free end and subsequently completed by positioning a string of pipes within the well and cementing the string in position. The casing increases the integrity of the wellbore and provides a fluid path between the surface and the selected underground reservoir for the injection of treatment chemicals into the surrounding reservoir in order to stimulate extraction, for the reception of the flow of hydrocarbons from the reservoir, and to allow the introduction of fluids for reservoir management or disposal purposes.
During conventional milling and / or drilling operations, a casing window assembly could be used for the completion of a lateral well. A conventional pipe window assembly

INDUSTRIAL casing generally includes a section of casing with a pre-milled window through the side of the casing for tool entry and an outer sleeve comprising aluminum connected around the pre-milled window. to protect the ring within the casing from debris and concrete as the casing is secured into the well. However, this type of casing window assembly has several disadvantages such as, for example, a larger outside diameter around the casing where the outer sleeve is connected, a lower pressure rating and has need to be milled before drilling the side well.
Other conventional casing window mounting designs include a section of the casing with the window pre-milled through the side of the casing for a tool entry and an inner steel sleeve connected to the window. Pre-milled to protect the interior of the casing from debris and concrete as the casing is secured into the hole. Although this type of mounting provides a better seal for the pre-milled window and may have a higher pressure rating, mounting requires a separate strip of

Of LA MturiEOAO INBUSTMAL recovery before drilling the lateral well. This additional separation strip to remove the inner sleeve can cost more than $ 1,350,000 pesos ($ 100,000.00 dollars) to recover from a deep well.
Other components of a conventional casing window assembly could include, for example, a mandrel carrying a diverter wedge and / or a termination diverter and a separate targeting member secured below a pre-milled window in the casing that orients the diverter wedge and / or termination diverter in the lateral position and suitable depth that is substantially equal to the same lateral position and depth as the pre-milled window. In this way, the orienting member orients the diverter wedge and / or termination diverter so that the milling / drilling tool could enter the reservoir through the pre-milled window at the proper lateral position and depth. Because most conventional targeting members provide guidance for both lateral position and depth at the same time, achieving adequate lateral position and depth in deeper wells can be time consuming and difficult due to the amount of of the torque or torque imposed on the drill column. In other words, as the poll column is

INDUSTRIAL slowly reversed from the top, the drill column torque increases and causes the bottom of the drill column, where the diverter wedge and / or termination diverter are located, to rapidly rotate in deeper applications. This often avoids the search for the proper lateral position, which is not known until torque is transmitted back to the drill string.

The casing window assembly 100 includes an upper end of an inner sleeve 116 (Figure 1), an intermediate section of inner sleeve 116 (Figure 2), and a lower end of inner sleeve 116 (Figure 3). The casing window assembly also includes a lower end of a tubular casing sleeve 102 (Figure 4).
The casing sleeve 102 has an inside diameter 104, an outside diameter 106, and a hole between the inside diameter 104 and the outside diameter 106 that forms a casing window, which could be pre-milled. The inside diameter 104 of casing sleeve 102 includes a recessed wall profile 108 for receiving a portion of an expandable wall 110 and a plurality of recesses for receiving a portion of a respective securing element. The recessed wall profile 108 of the casing sleeve 102 and the expandable wall 110 are circumferential. Inner sleeve 116 is releasably secured within casing sleeve 102 by expandable wall 110 and / or one or more securing elements, and has an inner diameter 118, an outer diameter 120, and a wall 122 between inside diameter 118 and outside diameter 120. The other portion of wall 122 could further include a counter-securing member 114 and another counter-securing member 115 opposite the securing member. securing 112 and opposite the other securing element 113, respectively. Preferably, the securing element 112 and the counter securing element 114 are positioned above the casing window. Preferably, the other securing member 113 and the other counter securing member 115 are positioned below the casing window. The number of securing elements could depend on a number of factors including, for example, the design of the casing window assembly 100 and the conditions under which it could be used.
The inner diameter 118 of the inner sleeve 116 includes a recessed wall portion 126 with a hole for receiving the securing element portion 112 and a counter-securing element portion 114. The inner sleeve 116 is secured, releasably. , in another inner sleeve 128 by means of a cutting element 130 and / or by another cutting element 131. Each recess in the inside diameter 104 of the casing sleeve 102 and each respective securing member 112, another securing member 113, the counter-securing member 114, and another counter-securing member 115 releasably secures, inner sleeve 116 within casing sleeve 102 in a pre-released position as illustrated in Figure 1. The expandable wall 110 and the recessed wall profile 108 of the casing sleeve 102 releasably secure the inner sleeve 116 within the casing sleeve 102 in a post-released position. Therefore, expandable wall 110 and recessed wall profile 108 could be designed to withstand a predetermined force that releasably secures inner sleeve 116 within casing sleeve 102 in the post-released position. One end of the recessed wall profile 108 includes a bracket 124 as illustrated in Figure 4. Bracket 124 secures inner sleeve 116 substantially almost in the post-released position when a force causes inner sleeve 116 to release from the post-released position and move toward bracket 124,

The outer diameter 120 of the inner sleeve 116 includes a circumferential recess above the casing window for receiving one seal 136 and another circumferential recess below the casing window for receiving another seal 138. Seal 136 and other seal 138 improve the pressure rating for casing window assembly 100 where each seal could be an O-ring or any other well-known sealing element. Additional seals 137, 139 could be included to further improve the pressure rating of the casing window assembly 100. Therefore, casing window assembly 100 could be rated with a high pressure rating of at least 8,500 psi due to its unique design. Each seal 136, 137, 138, 139 and / or inner sleeve 116 substantially prevents fluid communication between the main bore and within the interior of casing sleeve 102 adjacent the casing window when the Inner sleeve 116 is releasably secured in the pre-released position. INDUSTRIAL window casing, however, could be an integral component. Orientation member 514 includes a plurality of guide elements 516 separated by a plurality of grooves 518. The plurality of slots 518 includes a plurality of orientation slots that direct the mandrel 508 toward the lateral position that is substantially the same as the lateral position of the casing window and that allows the mandrel 508 to be lowered to a depth that it is substantially the same as the depth of the casing window. Each of the plurality of expandable stop and orientation wedges 512 and each of the other plurality of expandable stop and orientation wedges 513 could be positioned within a slot of the respective plurality of slots 518 as a function of contact with one of the plurality of guide elements 516. The plurality of grooves 518 are spaced the same distance around the circumference of the orientation member 514 in 72 ° increments, however, it could be spaced in any other preferred mode or increment. Because the mandrel 508 is aligned in a suitable depth and orientation, each of the three wedges of the plurality of expandable stop and orientation wedges 512 is positioned within a respective slot of the plurality of slots 518 which are referred to as the orientation grooves.
Next, with reference to Figure 6B, there is illustrated a schematic view of mandrel 508 and orientation member 514 for casing window mounting 500 wherein the mandrel is rotated from an inappropriate depth to a suitable depth and orientation. .
