Improvements relating to automatic injection devices.
Abstract
An injection device comprising a syringe (1) that can be extended against a biasing spring (9) from a retracted position in a housing (2) to a projection injection position. A spring-biased plunger has collapsible elbows (10) which, when the plunger is released, initially engage the end of the syringe to guide it into the projection position, whereupon stopping the movement of the syringe causes the elbows to lock. collapse within the syringe to allow the plunger to engage and guide cap (4).

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
There are several forms of automatic injection devices, which when operated cause the needle of a syringe to move forward so that it projects from a protective housing prior to activation of the syringe to express a dose of liquid through the needle. . It is important to try to ensure that the syringe is bodily moved forward to expose the needle before the liquid load is pressurized so that rocking motion of the needle does not occur before the actual injection takes place. It is an object of the invention to provide a mechanism that operates in this desired way.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention an injection device is provided to cause a dose of liquid to be ejected from the needle at one end of a syringe located within a housing of the device, the syringe can be moved by a plunger, with the release of an activation biasing member at one end of the housing to move the syringe, from a first position where the needle is protected by the housing, to a second position 2 IMPIAS
IWTTTTUTO MEXICANO DE LA MONEDALi IQte · where the needle projects from the other exft * piem0i aSC housing, the plunger is shaped like a lucir va1 with a longitudinally and centrally located flexible projection portion, prior to release of the activation biasing member, is positioned beyond the other end of the syringe such that a primary movement of the plunger, under biasing of the biasing member of activation will cause the projection portion to bear against the other end of the syringe in such a way that the syringe moves from the first to the second position, wherein retention of further movement of the syringe results in the flexible portion collapsing internally such that it enters the syringe, thereby allowing the plunger to move by secondary movement, within the syringe, in contact with and to act on a cap to compress the liquid within the syringe and cause expression of the liquid through the syringe needle.
With such an arrangement, the projection portion will remain in its projection position (in order to move the syringe from the first to the second position) until the force increases to such a degree that it allows the projection portion to collapse internally in such a way. that the plunger can then be moved within the syringe to cause the liquid to express through the syringe.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
IMPI MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY
<img file="MX345765B_D0004.tif" />
The projecting portion may comprise one or more flexible elbows that project beyond the normal circumference of the bar, but which can be compressed to such circumference. This can be in the form of two elbows defined on either side in a longitudinal groove in the bar. The elbows can be preformed as a pair of arms on either side of the longitudinal slit between the upper and lower solid portions of the bar.
Preferably, the injection device contains a return biasing member that acts between the syringe housing and the proximal end of the syringe to contain the retracted syringe within the housing until the activation biasing member is released.
One or more of the biasing members provided within the housing may be in the form of a coil spring.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention may be formed in various ways and a preferred example thereof will now be described, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The injection device shown in the drawings comprises a syringe 1 located within a protective housing 2. The syringe comprises a projection region 3 incorporating a dose of the liquid held in place by a cap 4 and having a needle 5 through from which the dose can be injected by applying pressure to the cap 4. The projection region 3 has an elongated head 6. A plunger 7 is biased forward by a coil spring 8, but is retained in a latched position (Figure 1) until such time as an actuator shown schematically at 11 is actuated to release plunger 7 and spring 8. Before use the syringe 1 is kept retracted in the housing 2 by a helical spring 9.
It will be appreciated that the plunger 7 is in the form of a rod having a central portion defining a pair of projecting elbows 10. These can be preformed as part of a molded plunger 7. The portions of the projection elbows 10 are flexible to move internally to cause the portion of the bar to assume a circumference similar to that of the rest of the bar. How can
<img file="MX345765B_D0006.tif" />
IMPI Mexican institute DE LA PtoHEDAD can be observed in Figure 2, when the plunger is deflected by spring 8 and the extended region is urinated by1 The elbows 10 rest against the head 6 of the projection region 3 and the force provided is sufficient to compress the spring 9 until the moment when the head 6 abuts the upper part of the housing 2, where the further movement of the projection region projection 3 stops. The continuous deflection created by spring 8 then causes elbows 10 to compress internally as they enter the interior of projection region 3. With the elbows 10 in the collapsed state, the plunger can then be relatively and easily moved within the projection region 3 such that it acts on the cap 4 and thus causes the contents of the syringe to be injected through the needle 5.
The illustrated configuration of the plunger 7 provides several technical advantages, it can be integrally molded. Also, the collapsing motion of the projection elbows provides an arrangement that can provide adequate injection force to cause the needle to enter the skin at a suitable depth, but then provide relatively low drag against the inner wall of the injection container. syringe such that the main portion of the spring thrust for the remainder of its stroke
