This application claims the priority of North American Patent Application No. 61 / 473,968 filed on April 11, 2011, the full contents of which are incorporated by reference in the present invention.
Field of the Invention
The present description refers generally to a piece of furniture, such as an adjustable table, table or chair, which includes a lifting mechanism for an adjustable platform, and more particularly, to an adjustable bed that has a high capacity of lift, while minimizing bed lift when in the fully down position.
Background of the Invention
Adjustable beds are well known, and are used in a variety of applications, including medical or home use. Such adjustable beds are often used by people who have limited mobility, this being the result of being obese, having a medical condition, or some other reason. Adjustable beds are often used in hospitals and other health care facilities, however an increasing number of people
<img file="MX342575B_D0009.tif" />
With obesity or people with other mobility challenges, they are using adjustable beds in their homes to improve their quality of life.
Adjustable beds are normally articulated in at least one place, and allow vertical orientation and elevation of the sleeping surface, which will be modified as required.
Adjustable "low profile" beds, ie beds that allow the sleeping surface to be positioned very close to the ground, when the bed is placed in its fully collapsed or fully down position, are becoming increasingly popular. There are a number of advantages associated with having the ability to collapse a bed into such a low-profile position, and the first of these advantages is that the process of getting down or getting into bed in one is carried out much easier by user / patient part. Another advantage of low-profile beds, particularly useful for hospital patients who are at risk of falling out of a hospital bed, is that they allow the sleeping surface to be placed as close to the floor as possible.
However, these low-profile beds must still have the ability to be adjusted so that they can be raised to a much higher position, so that medical personnel have comfortable access to the patient. Because
<img file="MX342575B_D0010.tif" />
INSTITUTO MEXICANO or INDUSTRIAL property the mechanisms required to allow bed movement and the motors required to drive such mechanisms, such known low-profile beds do not normally allow a fully collapsed position of less than approximately 8 inches (x 2.54 cm), above the ground surface. In addition, another disadvantage of known low-profile beds is that typical configurations of very low-profile bed lift mechanisms typically place actuators to raise or lower the bed at an angle with very little depth, when the bed is in the fully down / collapsed position. Accordingly, actuators, which are already limited to a certain extent in their lifting capacity by their small size required to fit within the tight space envelope of said low profile bed frame, can only produce one component of force. small vertical due to the relatively shallow angle at which the actuator is placed under the bed. Therefore, this small component of vertical force can significantly, if not completely prevent, the ability to elevate the bed and the patient.
In the past, these drawbacks have limited the minimum height of mechanically operated adjustable beds as well as their maximum lifting capacity (example: maximum patient weight). For example, for the reasons stated above, most beds in
<img file="MX342575B_D0011.tif" />
INSTITUTO MEXICANODE LA PROPIEDAI INDUSTRIAL low profile existing that allow a minimum vertical height (for example in the fully lowered position) of 8 inches (x 2.54 cm) or less, have a maximum capacity of

(226.7 kg). As a means of comparison, adjustable beds of the type designed specifically for obese patients typically have a maximum lifting capacity of 1000 pounds (453.5 kg), however these specific beds for people with obesity cannot be lowered into a position of low profile. Attempts have been made to design a bed that achieves a compromise between lifting capacity and minimum height when fully down, however such beds normally allow only a height adjustment range of 9.5 to 29 inches (x 2.54 cm) at a maximum load of 850 pounds (385.5 kg) (for example, they only allow a minimum lift of 9.5 inches (x 2.54 cm), when placed in the fully down position, and they can support only one patient weighing less than 850 pounds (385.5 kg). Therefore, such beds cannot either collapse in a real low-profile position (example: less than 9.5 inches (x 2.54 cm)) due to the larger actuators, or the geometry of the mechanism that allows a

higher lifting capacity, or have limited lifting capacity.
Attempts have been made to address the aforementioned aspects. US Patent No. 6,473,922, filed Nov. 5, 2002 to Sommerfeld et al., Describes, for example, an articulated bed that attempts to minimize the amount of force required to lift the bed from its lowered position. However, there are some downsides to this articulated bed frame. The bed taught by Sommerfeld includes a main frame, on which a surface sleeping platform is mounted, and which is supported by a pair of pivoting legs. The legs are supported and actuated by stabilizers, and have wheels on the outer free ends of the legs. Therefore, in order for the sleeping surface to rise or fall vertically, the pivot legs must swing through their travel arc, as shown in Figure 2, for example. This results in vertical displacement of the entire bed frame. As can be seen in figure 2 of the Sommerfeld Publication, for example, if the longitudinal position of the end of a first of one of the pivot legs (such as the one closest to the head, for example) is maintained stationary, then activating the bed to raise or lower the sleeping surface, will cause the second

The opposite leg moves longitudinally outwards, since the leg pivots through its radius of travel. Consequently, this causes a longitudinal displacement of the entire bed, in this case, in a direction towards the foot of the bed. Clearly, such lateral translation of the entire bed during height adjustment is undesirable. There are also other disadvantages with the bed described in US Patent No. 6,473,922. For example, this configuration requires the bed to be moved into its fully collapsed / lowered position, as shown in Figure 1 for example, before the entire layer can be moved on the floor. Once in the fully down position, the castor wheels mounted on the main frame engage the floor, thereby allowing the bed to be moved as needed, for example, to move the bed from a hospital room to other. When the bed is in an extended position, whereby the sleeping surface is raised out of the fully collapsed position, the bed cannot be moved. Clearly, this is undesirable, particularly in hospital applications, and in other medical applications.
Sommerfeld's articulated bed frame is of the type without a fixed base. Fixed base beds are often preferred because they eliminate any chance of the bed being displaced laterally (eitherr· 'X *
INSTITl TO MEXICANO OE INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY longitudinally (forward and backward) or laterally (sideways)) during vertical height adjustment of the sleeping surface. However, fixed base bed designs in the past had been inconsistent with allowing very low minimum height - i.e. existing fixed base bed designs have not had the ability to adapt position desired low-profile minimum height, since the fixed base alone is often higher than the desired minimum sleeping surface height of 8 inches (x 2.54 cm) or less, and therefore the overall minimum height of such beds is often approximately 12 inches (x 2.54 cm) in the fully collapsed position. This is considered undesirable for applications where a low profile bed is desired or required.
Accordingly, there remains a need for an adjustable bed or other improved adjustable platform, particularly one that has a higher lifting capacity, while minimizing the lifting of the bed when fully down.
Brief Description of the Invention
Accordingly, an improved low-profile bed is provided that has a high lift capacity, and a low-profile lift when fully collapsed, while allowing for a large vertical height adjustment,

and a full range of angular adjustments, between the articulated sections of the bed.

Detailed description of the invention
The adjustable bed, as described herein, provides a low-profile bed that has the ability to collapse at a very low profile lift, while still providing high load-lifting capacity. For example, the minimum vertical height between the floor and the mattress-bearing surface at the low-profile elevation of the adjustable bed of the present invention is at least 9 inches (x 2.54 cm), and may be less than 8.5 inches (x 2.54 cm),
<img file="MX342575B_D0022.tif" />
while providing lifting capacity greater than at least 850 pounds (385.5 kg), and preferably greater than 1000 pounds (453.5 kg) (such as between 1000 pounds (453.5 kg) and 2000 pounds (907.18 kg), and more preferably between 1000 (453.5 kg) and 1600 pounds (725.7 kg) In a particular embodiment of the adjustable bed of the present invention, the minimum vertical height in the low-profile bed configuration is between 6 and 9 inches (x 2.54 cm) ). In a more preferred embodiment, the minimum vertical height is between 8 and 8.5 inches (x 2.54 cm), and can be approximately 8.25 inches (x 2.54 cm). To date, all known low-profile beds either sacrifice lifting capacity, to have the ability to collapse into such a small envelope, or alternatively allow such higher lifting capacity, but as a result, they are much larger and by therefore they cannot collapse down into a 9-inch (x 2.54 cm) elevation sub-envelope, and therefore cannot be considered “low profile” as defined herein. The adjustable bed of the present invention, as will be described in greater detail below, is designed and constructed to have the ability to both have a maximum lifting capacity of greater than 1000 pounds (453.5 kg), while having a minimum vertical height. less than 9 inches (x 2.54 cm), and preferably between 8 and 8.5 inches (x 2.54 cm), when it completely collapses in its

INSTITUTO MEXICANO OE LA PROPIEDAD INDUSTRIAL low profile configuration. Furthermore, the adjustable bed of the present invention does this while still allowing for a large vertical height adjustment range (for example 8 to 30 inches (x 2.54 cm)), as well as a full range of both a tilt orientation of front to back of the main structure, such as the angular fit between the hinged sections of the mattress support platforms. Furthermore, the camera of the present invention includes a fixed structure base, and allows the full range of vertical height adjustment, without any longitudinal displacement of the bed, during travel.
Although the adjustable furniture item of the present invention will be described generally with respect to the articulated bed of the type used in hospitals, and other medical applications. It should be understood that the design and configuration of the adjustable furniture article of the present invention can be used for other applications, preferably, but not necessarily, in the fields of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. For example, the adjustable devices described here can be applied and used on an adjustable table or other platform of the type, for example, used in surgical applications, to support large animals and in veterinary applications and / or vertically adjustable platforms / tables, as well as for an adjustable chair of the type used by dentists.
<img file="MX342575B_D0024.tif" />
Referring first to Figures 1 to 4a, the adjustable bed 10 includes a main structure 12 on which a mattress support platform 14 is mounted. The generally rectangular bed 10 includes a head 11 fitted to the end of the head of the structure main 12, and a footboard 13 fitted to the end of the feet of the main structure. Preferably, although not necessarily, one or both of the head 11 and footboard 13 are removably fitted with the main structure 12, so that they can be easily and quickly disconnected from them, such as by simply lifting their part. top vertically. The main structure 12 is internally connected to a fixed structure base 16 by means of a lifting mechanism 18. The lifting mechanism 18 thus supports the main structure 12 and is operable to move and position the main structure 12 between a fully collapsed position (as shown in Figures 1 to 2), and a fully raised position ( as shown in Figures 3b and 4a) relative to the fixed structure base 16. The fixed structure base 16 includes wheels 20, preferably rotatable, mounted thereto for moving the fixed structure base on a floor surface 22.
The main structure 12, the fixed base 16 and the lifting mechanism 18 are assembled, without obstructing each other and

they collapse in the low profile bed configuration, as best seen in Figure 2, when the main structure 12, and therefore the entire bed, is lowered into the fully collapsed position. As can be seen in Figure 2, in this fully collapsed position, the main structure 12 and the components of the lifting mechanism 18 actually fit inside and below the tubular structure of the fixed base structure 16, so that the Additional height is caused solely by the vertical thickness of the tubes used to form the mattress support platform 14. When the upper surface of the mattress platform 14 is in this fully collapsed position, below the profile, which is mounted on the main structure 12, it is located at a minimum vertical height H1 above the floor surface 22. In at least In a particular embodiment, this minimum vertical height H1 in the collapsed position is at least 9 inches (x 2.54 cm), although it may be 8 inches (x 2.54 cm) or less in a preferred embodiment. Although the fully raised height H2 (see figure 4a) of the mattress platform 14 may vary, in a particular embodiment it is at least 30 inches (x 2.54 cm), and therefore the range of travel of the general vertical lift It is between 21 to 22 inches (x 2.54 cm).
Adjustable bed 10 is a "fixed base" bed, where bed structure 16 defines a tubular structure that

it is at least partially in a plane 28 (see figure 4a) that remains substantially parallel to the surface of the floor 22, regardless of the vertical elevation of the main structure 12 i.e., regardless of whether the main structure is in a fully collapsed position ( figure 2), a completely elevated position (figure 4a) or any elevation between them. The wheels 20 mounted on the fixed structure base 16, remain in fixed locations (having a pivot and rotate ability, when required) on the outer periphery of the fixed structure base 16, preferably at the four corners of the structure rectangular shaped base, regardless of the vertical position of the main structure 12 relative to the base of the fixed structure 16. In other words, along the path of the total height of the main structure 12, and therefore the mattress support platform 14 therein, the wheels 20 remain substantially stationary relative to the fixed base structure 16 , and therefore in a substantially longitudinal stationary form, and leveled on the floor surface 22. This is not the case, for example, with collapsible bed designs, which use two center legs that have a wheel at the lower ends thereof, such as for example in the aforementioned North American Patent No. 6,473,922, filed 5 November 2002.
In addition, another particular advantage enabled by the

Fixed structure 16 is that because the level remains, that is, it is substantially parallel to the surface of the floor 22, at all times, the load cells, which are directly incorporated into the wheel assemblies of the fixed base, all times they can accurately measure the patient's weight in bed. This is not always possible in prior art bed designs, where the bed frame bases on which the wheels are mounted, are tilted and can be placed at any number of angles, where they are raised or lowered the sleeping surface. Therefore, in these prior art designs, accurate measurement of the patient's weight can only be achieved in certain predefined positions on the sleeping surface, such as, for example, only in the fully raised or fully collapsed positions. Because the structure of the fixed base 16 of the bed 10 of the present invention, remains level at all times, regardless of the vertical position of the main structure 12, and the mattress support platform 14 found therein. , the load cells in the wheel assemblies mounted on the base frame 16 at all times, and at all vertical platform elevations, can accurately measure the patient's weight. This can mean significant savings in time and effort for the bed operator, such as a medical professional, for example, without the

_____I
INSTITUTO MEXICANO DE LA PROPIEDAD INDUSTRIAL need to raise or lower the bed in order to accurately measure the load imposed on the bed (for example, the patient's weight).
As best shown in Figure 4a, the wheels 20 mounted on the ends of the fixed base structure 16 are preferably rotatable assemblies, defining a horizontal axis of rotation 23 of the wheels, as well as an axis of vertical rotary pivot 25, so that when the wheels are fully unlocked by a wheel locking mechanism 24, they can either roll around axles 23, or pivot around axles 25, so that the wheels automatically align themselves with the travel direction of the respective end of the bed. The wheel locking mechanism 24 allows individual wheels to be selectively locked, so that any one or more of the four wheel assemblies can be partially blocked (for example, rolling around the axis 23) or completely blocked (for example, both rolling around axis 23 and pivoting around axis 25 are avoided). The wheel locking mechanism 24 is controlled by a single foot pedal 26, which is located at the foot end of the fixed frame base 16 under the footboard 13. Accordingly, all wheels can be centrally locked and unlocked via a single foot pedal

li. XVJL X JL
MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY brake 26, which is a significant improvement over most bed designs, whereby the individual wheels must separate the locking and / or unlocking mechanism during use. Generally, placing foot-operated foot pedal 26 of wheel locking mechanism 24 at the bottom end of the bed, rather than along a longitudinal side edge of the bed, as is typical for beds of the prior art, greatly simplifies the ability to manipulate and maneuver the bed from the lower end thereof, for example by holding the footboard 13 to push, pull and / or guide the bed, as may be required to move it to the desired position on the floor surface.
As noted above, the fixed structure base 16 defines a plane 28 within which at least a part of it rests, and which remains substantially parallel to the surface of the floor 22 regardless of the vertical elevation position of the main structure 12 and mattress platform 14. As can be seen in the figures both
3a as 3b, this plane 28 of the base of the fixed structure 16 is located approximately at or below the elevation of the axes of horizontal rotation 23 of the wheels 20 of the rotating assemblies. This is made possible due to the shape of the rotating support arms 30, which as best seen in Figure 3b, have a shape
Pl
MEXICAN INSTITUTE DlLA.Is your curve up and out, h?hilitand ^ H <a <until it forms the lowest point at the point on the base of fixed structure 16 that will be as close as possible to the surface of floor 22, where the wheels rest. In other words, the shape of the rotatable support arms 30 allows the lowest part of the fixed bed structure 16 to be lowered within the vertical height defined by the diameter of the wheels themselves. Accordingly, when placed in the fully collapsed position, the upper surface of the main structure 12 has the ability to align almost vertically with the top of the rotating support arms 30 of the rotating wheel assemblies, resulting in a very compact packaging, as can be seen in Figures 2 and 3a.
In a preferred embodiment, wheels with a relatively large diameter 20 are preferably used, as this generally improves the ease of movement of the bed. As can be seen in the illustrated mode (see figure 2), the wheels 20 mounted on the fixed structure base 16 can have a diameter that is greater than half the total minimum vertical height H1 of the bed, in the bed low profile. In a possible embodiment, wheels 20 have a diameter of approximately 5 inches (x 2.54 cm), while the overall minimum vertical height of mattress platform 14 above ground surface 22 remains

OF THE PROPERTY VXwmHgjW'.eíJP
INDUSTRIAL only 8 to 9 inches (x 2.54 cm). Of course, other wheel diameters and relative size are also possible for the minimum vertical height, and may vary depending on the intended application for the particular bed.
Another useful feature of the bed of the present invention 10 is that, despite its ability to collapse into an envelope with a very low profile size as seen in Figure 2, when the main structure 12 and the support platform of the mattress 14 are raised, as shown in figure 4a, for example however there is a sufficiently large vertical space opening H3 below the longitudinally extending tubes of the fixed base structure 16, at least in a longitudinal central region thereof, to thereby allow access under the bed . This may be useful and / or required, for example, so that the legs or bases of the rolling medical equipment can slide under the bed 10. The vertical space opening H3 can be, at least in a particular embodiment, up to 6 inches (x 2.54 cm). For a low-profile 10 bed that has a minimum overall collapsed height of only 8 to 9 inches (x 2.54 cm), a 6-inch (x 2.54 cm) gap opening below the fixed base frame is particularly large .
The lifting mechanism 18 will be described more fully

INDUSTRIAL detail, with particular reference to Figures 4b to 5. As noted above, the lifting mechanism 18 supports the main structure 12, and can be actuated to move and place the main structure 12 in the desired vertical position, allowing the main structure 12, and therefore the support platform of the mattress 14 mounted thereon, travel between the fully collapsed position and the fully raised position, relative to the base of the fixed structure 16. With particular reference to Figure 4b, the lifting mechanism 18 includes at least a first leg member 32 (in this case the head leg) having a lower, first end 34 centrally connected to the fixed structure base 16 at a fixed lower pivot 36 and a second, upper end 38 centrally connected to main structure 12 at a movable upper pivot 40. The leg member 32 flexes at a point near the second end 38 thereof, such as to allow the fully collapsed position (as seen in Figure 2, for example). The movable upper pivot 40 may comprise a roller or slider 41, which is restricted to move within a curvilinear line 42 that is fixed in one of the longitudinal extension tubes 44 of the main structure 12 (see Figures 9 and 10). In a preferred, but not essential, embodiment, in fact, the curvilinear tracks 42 are formed, directly within the body
<img file="MX342575B_D0032.tif" />
MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF PROPIFPAF, INDUSTRIAL of the longitudinal extension tubes 44 of the main structure, as opposed to the guide tracks welded to the external surface of tubes 44, and can be formed therein by any suitable method , such as by laser cutting the predetermined curved groove in the inner wall of the longitudinal extension tubes 44.
As best seen in Figures 9 and 10, the curved axis of travel for the movable upper pivot points of the leg members, within curvilinear tracks 42, are lowered toward a longitudinal center of the main structure 12 so that they extend from an upper point at a longitudinal outer end of the curvilinear track 42 to a low point at a longitudinal inner end of the curvilinear track. As seen in FIG. 10, the two curvilinear tracks 42 (i.e. one for the movable top pivot of the head end leg member, and the other for the movable top pivot of the head end leg member the feet) in each of the longitudinal extension tubes 44 of the main structure 12, are mirror images of each other relative to a longitudinal central midpoint.
Accordingly, the movable upper pivot 40 of the head end leg member 32, can be translated within this curvilinear track 42, when the leg pivots about its fixed lower pivot point 36. The
<img file="MX342575B_D0033.tif" />

INSTITUTO MEXICANO Dt LA PROPERTY INDUSTRIAL movable upper pivot 40, therefore moves along a curved axis defined by curvilinear track 42, thus having the curved axis both vertical and longitudinal components. The movement of the movable upper pivot 40 of the leg member 32 within the curvilinear track 42, restricts the pivoting movement of the leg member 32. The lifting mechanism 18 and the geometry of the components thereof, therefore allow the main structure to remain substantially horizontal throughout its total movement between the fully collapsed position and the fully raised position, and this without causing any longitudinal displacement of the main structure and the mattress platform. The curved translational movement of the movable upper pivot 40 of the leg member 32, and the similar movement of the upper pivot of the leg element of the similar and corresponding foot end, thus help to control the movement of the structure assembly main and mattress platform through its total vertical path, without causing any longitudinal displacement relative to the structure of the fixed base. In other words, the vertically moving main frame remains centered directly above the fixed base frame at all times through its vertical path, without unwanted longitudinal displacement of the bed due to

less in part to curvilinear track 42 restricting movable top pivots 40 from being displaced along the curved axis. This curved path of travel restricted by curvilinear tracks 42, also helps provide initial assistance, or rather helps reduce initial resistance to upward displacement, when the main structure is first actuated by lifting mechanism 18, to move out of the fully collapsed low-profile position.
Referring particularly to FIG. 4b, the lifting mechanism 18 further includes at least one stabilizing joint 46 for each leg member, at least one actuator 60, and a force multiplication drive joint 62 that interconnects the actuator 60 and the stabilization joint 46. The actuator has a first end (in this case a longitudinally central one) fitted to the main structure 12 and a second free end centrally connected with the force multiplication drive union 62.
Force multiplication drive joint 62 includes a drive joint 64 and an intermediate joint 56, the drive joint 64 having an upper end centrally mounted to the main frame at the first rotary pivot 66 and a lower free end, pivoting around the first pivot pivot 66, connected in a way
<img file="MX342575B_D0037.tif" />
central to the second end of the actuator 60 at the pivot point of the actuator 68. The intermediate link 56 has a first end centrally connected to the transmission link at a point in the transmission link 64, between the upper and lower ends of the itself, and a second opposite end of intermediate joint 56 being centrally engaged with stabilizing joint 46, and more particularly, with torsion arm 52 thereof, as seen below.
The stabilization joint 46 has an upper end centrally connected to the main structure 12 at a second rotary pivot 48, and a lower end centrally connected to the leg member at an intermediate pivot point 50 positioned on the member of the leg between the first end 34 and the second end 38 thereof, although not necessarily at the midpoint thereof. The actuation of the stabilization joint 32 by rotation about its rotary pivot 48, thus causes the leg member 32 to move. The stabilization link 46 includes a torsion arm 52 that extends from the fixed rotary pivot point 48 thereof, and therefore defines a remote end positioned at a distance outside the upper end of the stabilization joint, being secured in additional form thereof, so that rotation of torsion arm 52 causes corresponding rotation of the
<img file="MX342575B_D0038.tif" />
stabilization 46. The second pivot pivot point 48, for example, can be formed through a horizontal pipe to which both the upper end of the stabilization joint 46 and the upper part of the torsion arm 52 are secured, such as by welding. The remote end of the torque arm connects centrally to a torque arm pivot 54 with intermediate joint 56. Particularly, the intermediate joint 56 has one end centrally connected to the remote end of the torque arm 52, and the opposite end centrally connected in a pivot joint 58, the second opposite end of the joint being centrally connected intermediate, with the remote end of the torque arm.
It should be noted that both the first and second rotary pivots 66 and 48 define separate parallel axes of rotation, around which the transmission link 64 and the torque arm 52 of the stabilization link 46 rotate.
This force multiplication drive joint 62 of the lifting mechanism 18 generates a force multiplication effect, such that a relative large load (at least greater than 850 pounds (385.5 kg.), And preferably greater than 1000 pounds (453.5 kg.) can be lifted by lifting mechanism 18, even from a very low fully collapsed position, without requiring either a large capacity actuator, or extremely long and bulky torque levers as required
<img file="MX342575B_D0039.tif" />
typically in prior art designs. Furthermore, another advantage of the lifting mechanism 18, and therefore of the entire bed 10, is that it provides a very good ratio of lifting capacity to weight, or "force" ratio to weight, so that the same bed as weighing less than 500 pounds (226.7 kg), it is ready to have the capacity to lift loads of at least double, and this, with actuators with a relatively moderate force production (for example 10,000 N). The force multiplication drive joint 62 of the lifting mechanism 18 allows a higher force, and therefore torsion, to be generated from a very compact system. Large torsion bars, which are sometimes used in prior art beds specifically designed for obese patients, and other higher lift load uses because they have the ability to generate greater torsion, and therefore both lifting force cannot be adapted in a low profile design such as bed 10 of the present invention, where the minimum available vertical height is less than 9 inches (x 2.54 cm), since long torsion bars simply cannot fit within the small space envelope (for example: 4 to 8 inches (x 2.54 cm)) available, where all components need to be adjusted when the bed is lowered into a position of Low profile completely collapsed.

INDUSTRIAL
<img file="MX342575B_D0040.tif" />
The actuators 60 of the lifting mechanism of the present invention 18 can have a maximum force capacity of 10,000 N, for example, however in tests carried out it was found that only 7,000 N was required to lift a load of approximately 1000 pounds (453.5 kg). In fact, much higher maximum load capacities (eg, greater than 1,550 pounds (703.0 kg)) were found to be possible using the lifting mechanism 18 of bed 10 of the present invention.
Referring again to Figure 4c, the lifting mechanism 18 which drives the other leg member, i.e. the foot end leg 70, is very similar to that described above with respect to the head end leg 32. Accordingly, similar reference numerals have been used in Figure 4c for corresponding parts, in the parts of the lifting mechanism 18, the drive assembly, and the force multiplication joint 62, which are provided to drive the leg member from the end of the feet 70. The foot end part of the lifting mechanism 18 differs only slightly from that of the head end part shown in Figure 4c, since the lower end 34 of the foot end leg member 70 includes a moving pivot link 63 with the fixed base frame 16, rather than a fixed pivot point, as for pivot 36 between the lower end of the head end leg 32 and the frame

fixed base. The moving pivot 63 of the foot end leg member 70 therefore can be displaced within a longitudinally extending groove formed in a tube of the fixed base structure 16. Accordingly, both the top pivots and Bottoms of the foot end leg 70 are sliding pivot joints, that is, neither is a fixed pivot joint. Thus, the foot end leg 70 rotates as the bed is raised and lowered around a virtual pivot point of travel. The sliding pivot joint 63 between the lower end 34 of the foot end leg 70 and the fixed base structure 16, helps to allow the main structure 12 and the mattress platform 14 to tilt around an axis transverse tilt (such as to tilt the bed, for example, if it becomes necessary to raise or lower the patient's feet relative to their head, or vice versa), without causing any longitudinal displacement of the sub-assembly of the main structure 12 and platform 14.
Referring again to Figure 1 and Figure 6, the mattress support platform 14 mounted on top of main structure 12, may include at least two separate hinged platform sections including a head portion 15 and a part of the feet 17, which connect and articulate internally relative to each other.
<img file="MX342575B_D0042.tif" />
Each of the head part 15 and the foot part 17 of the mattress support platform 14, is actuated by an independent actuator, to allow adjustment of the relative angle between them between 0 and 90 degrees. In the illustrated embodiment, a third articulated platform portion, i.e., a knee support 19, and a fourth articulated platform portion, i.e., a lower back support portion 21, are also provided and articulated in similar with the next section of adjacent platform and move, as required, either in conjunction with head and foot parts 15, 17 or independently.
An actuator is provided to move each part of the foot and head of the platform, and each is controlled individually by a control box. In at least one embodiment of the bed, two separate control boxes are provided, one for half of the feet and one for half of the head of the bed. Each of these control boxes controls two separate actuators, i.e. one being the vertically adjustable actuators 60 to operate the lifting mechanism 18 and one to adjust the angle of inclination of the foot or head parts 17, 15 of the mattress support platform 14.
With particular reference to adjusting the foot portion 17 of the mattress support platform 14, as best seen in Figure 4c, a bar is connected

joint 72 at a fixed pivot joint 73 with one end of foot portion 17 of platform 14, and having a pivot joint 74 at the opposite end of tie bar 72, which is received slidably within an L-shaped groove formed within a bracket mounted to main structure 12. This tie bar 72 and the sliding pivot point 74, correspondingly allow the foot angle (i.e., the relative angle between the foot angle of platform 14, and the knee support portion 19) is adjusted by the operation of the dedicated actuator that controls the angle of inclination of the foot part of the platform 17, regardless of the vertical position of the entire main structure 12 (i.e. the vertical position of the bed) and also without causing any unwanted longitudinal displacement of the platform 14.
Referring now to Figures 7 to 8, in at least one embodiment of bed 10, platform 14 allows both lateral and longitudinal adjustment. More preferably, it becomes necessary, or desirable, to widen the overall transverse width of platform 14, to accommodate a large and / or heavier patient, for example, platform 14 is provided with a quick release type adjustment mechanism, to modify easily and quickly both the width and / or length of the platform 14, and this, while providing corners

fully supported at each end of the platform. As can be seen in Figure 7, the mattress platform includes at least one quick release adjusting mechanism 80 that allows the width and / or length of the platform to be varied independently, by sliding a movable outer edge of the platform from mattress which will be extended relative to a fixed central part of the mattress platform, while still providing full support at the corners of the rectangular mattress platform. The quick release width adjusting mechanism 80 generally includes a drive lever 81 which acts to rotate a bar 82 extending laterally within at least one horizontal hollow tube 87 of the part of the fixed mattress platform, relative to the which, an outer longitudinal tube 86 can be displaced from the displaceable outer edge. The bar 82 has an L-shaped end 83 thereof, which engages corresponding notches 84 defined in the grooves 85 formed in the tube wall. This slot 85 is cut from the side wall 91 of the platform tube 87, for example by laser cutting. Accordingly, bar 82 translates into tube 87 and the L-shaped end 83 has the ability to slide into cut groove 85 and engage with notches 84, all without interfering with the mattress or the various locking mechanisms. height and position adjustment, so that when the L-shaped end 83

placed in the notches 84, relative displacement between the displaceable outer edge 86, and the fixed portion of the mattress platform is avoided (for example: tube 87). This mechanism allows the external longitudinal tube 86, which forms the external lateral edge of this particular part (in this case the knee support part 19) of the platform 14, to extend or retract laterally quickly and easily. (i.e., without requiring tools, for example), as necessary, when the actuating lever 81 is deployed to thereby release the end of the L-shaped bar 83 from its engagement notches 84.
Similarly, as best seen in Figure 8, platform 14 includes corner adjustment mechanisms 92 that enable easy integrated adjustment of both the length and width of the entire platform of the corners thereof, also without require tools and late modifications. The corners of the platform 14 are formed so that the longitudinal tubes 88 of the platform 14 have a smaller outline tube member 89 telescopically received therein, thereby allowing longitudinal adjustment of the subassembly of the part of feet 17 of platform 14. In addition, the smallest corner tube sub-assembly 89 also telescopically matches a side end tube 90 so that the side width of the same part of foot 17 of platform 14 can be adjusted

MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY and vary, as required. A similar adjustment mechanism can be provided in the head portion 15 of the platform. Accordingly, these platform adjustment systems allow the width and / or length of each platform section to be easily and quickly modified as required, without having to sacrifice a corner region of the platform that does not provide any support. In this regard, the known prior art platforms, which offer any adjustment, always do so by sacrificing a fully supported corner of the mattresses, because a gap is always left in the corner region when possible (i.e. not Modifications of length and width are integrated, as in the corner adjustment mechanism 92 described above.
Referring again to Figures 1a and 3a, footboard 12 of bed 10 may include one or more control panels 120 therein, such as an LCD touchscreen 122 and / or a more traditional control panel 124 having a number of push buttons on it. As can be seen, both the footboard 13 and the end of the feet of the main structure 12, can have said button control panel 124, so that if / when the footboard is disconnected from the main structure and removed, it continues control of the adjustable bed 10 being possible. As noted above, at least footboard 13 is embedded in

OE LA FW.VJK / AV INDUSTRIAL removable form with the main structure 12, such as by means of posts 215 protruding from them, and they are received coincidentally within the corresponding holes formed in the end of the feet of the main structure. An electrical quick connect joint 226 is used to electrically interconnect footboard 13 with electronic and electrical signals from the main frame, so that when footboard 13 is slid down into engagement with the main frame using the alignment posts 215, the matching halves of the quick connect joint 226, plug into each other, to provide power to the control panels on the footboard, and allow electrical communication between the main structure control system and the footboard electronics panels.
Bed 10 thus includes an electrical control system, which can be operated, for example, by touchscreen 122 on footboard 13, and which includes an on-board computer that is programmed to allow all bed operations to be controlled from this point. For example, as mentioned above, swivel wheel 20 assemblies can be provided with load cells so that they have the ability to measure the load applied on the bed (for example to measure the patient's weight) when it is in the bed. The system
<img file="MX342575B_D0048.tif" />
The control therefore has the ability to measure and display on the touch screen 122 the patient's weight in real time, and this, regardless of the position of the bed (eg fully collapsed, fully raised and / or in any position angle of the mattress support platform). Accordingly, the control system is programmed to provide a bed exit alarm feature, whereby when this feature is activated, an alarm will sound (which may include an audible alarm as well as a visual on-screen alert. 122) when the patient gets out of bed (i.e. the signal sent from the load cells on wheels 20 to the control system, indicates that substantially all of the load on the bed has been suddenly removed.) This feature can be enabled and disabled as needed, for example by the healthcare professional operating the system via the touch screen 122.
In addition, because the control system enables the patient's weight to be measured in real time, and also because the on-board computer includes a memory that allows the patient's measured weight to be stored continuously and recorded in a period of time, the software programmed into the on-board computer allows the touch screen 122 to display, for example, a numerical and / or graphical representation of any change over time in the

INDUSTRIAL patient weight. This can be particularly useful, for example, in cases where a health care professional wishes to monitor a patient's weight in order to detect any significant change in the patient, which could be indicative of either improvement or a deterioration of the patient's medical condition. When illustrated graphically, such as a line graph showing the patient's measured weight on a vertical axis, and displaying time on a horizontal axis, the touchscreen 122 allows the user to touch anywhere. over time on the horizontal axis, to visually reveal the exact measured weight of the patient at that specific time point. A horizontal axis slider can be deployed so that touching, and then horizontally moving the slider moving forward and backward in time, illustrates the patient's measured weight at any point in time. For example, if the control system has been adjusted, such as controlled by touchscreen 122, to measure the patient's weight over a 24 hour period, at any time (either during these 24 hours or on a date / time posterior), the user has the ability to make contact with the illustrated graph at a desired point in the recorded time (for example 6 months ago) and the touchscreen 122 will display the exact numerical value of the patient's weight, as measured at that specific point in the

Another feature provided by the bed control system 10, and therefore which can be displayed on the touch screen 122, is the graphical representation of the angles of each of the movable parts of the adjustable bed, such as the vertical height. of the main structure 12 and / or the relative angular positions of the articulated parts of the mattress support platform 14. Furthermore, the control system allows the relative angles of these parts of the mattress support platform 14 to be adjusted as required, either manually or automatically, to maintain a desired relative angle throughout the entire range of motion. from the bed (both vertical height adjustment and longitudinal tilt angle from front to back). For example, if the head portion 15 of the mattress support platform 14 is positioned at a 45 degree angle relative to the horizontal, and the knee and foot support portions 19 and 17 of the platform are positioned having a relative angle of 70 degrees between them, then the entire main structure 12 is tilted relative to the horizontal (and therefore relative to the fixed base structure 16) about a tilt axis from front to back, the control system can adjust the relative angles of the platform segments as necessary, to maintain the same angles and / or a constant relative position, regardless of the

Angle of Inclination of the entire main structure 12. The actual angular positions of the platform segments are illustrated on the touch screen 122, for example in a graphical representation (the line representing each illustrated segment at an angle relative to each other) and / or numerical representation (exact angles relative to a common reference or relative to each following segment).
