COMBINATION OF CONTAINER AND BAG
<img file="MX339528B_D0006.tif" />
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to packaging and containers. More particularly, the present invention relates to a combined container and bag and its method of manufacture.
Background of the Invention
Flowable materials including food products such as cereals and the like and numerous other products have been sold in packages such as boxes for many years. Such packaging is desired since the packaging protects the product from decomposition and physical damage. These packages also stack easily for shipping and display on shelves. Packaging such as boxes use an internal bag that contains the product inside the box. After the bag is opened and the desired amount of product is removed, the bag is released, usually by folding the top of the bag on itself. Such internal pouches, however, frequently become difficult to open and hardly ever reseal effectively.
Recently, products have been proposed where the bag is outside the box instead of inside the box. US Patent No. 6,908,422 showed that a cardboard box inserted into a plastic bag has a sealable top with a hermetic seal. The box is inserted while in
<img file="MX339528B_D0007.tif" />
its shape collapsed and manipulated into an open pinion when desired to fill the box. This can create problems during use since the complete box is in the bag and can damage the bag when trying to open the box.
North American Patent Application Published No.
2005/0194386 refers to a plastic bag box, with a hermetic seal cover to reseal the cardboard boxes. The zip-lock plastic bag is placed on top of the box. The bag has an open bottom and an elastic strap around the bottom edge of the bag to secure the bag to the box. This distribution does not appear to provide an effective seal.
A similar distribution is shown in the Patent
North American No. 7,160,029. In the embodiment shown in Figure 9b thereof, the bottom edge of the bag includes a glue strip on the bottom of the bag. While this may create a better seal on some occasions, this seal does not allow the inner bag to close, nor does it improve the seal at the other end of the carton, thereby leaving the product inside the carton relatively unprotected from the decomposition due to the infiltration of moisture and oxygen.
There is, therefore, a need for a combined container and bag that is capable of effectively sealing the container. There is also another need for a combined container and bag where the bag can be resealed after the bag is
<img file="MX339528B_D0008.tif" />
In a first embodiment, a container is provided that includes a container member and a bag member, preferably a resealable bag member, where the bag member is positioned on the container member to produce a bag-like mount on the container.
In a second embodiment, the bag member can be placed within the container member to produce a bag-like assembly within the container.
In bag-in-container and bag-on-container mounts, the container member may have any desired configuration such as tubular containers and box-type containers. Preferably, the container member is box-shaped including a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of opposite side walls, and a plurality of fins. The box can be formed from a folding carton that includes a plurality of flaps that can be manipulated to form a bottom wall of the box container. The front, rear and side walls, as well as fins, can be manipulated to form a box-like container.
Where the container member is in the form of a box, in one aspect, the upper end of each of the side walls, front wall, back wall of the box can be folded down and down to allow the
IMPI
<img file="MX339528B_D0009.tif" />
Inner surfaces of the sunermres ends of the box walls form strips of lining externally on the folding cardboard. These liner strips may carry one or more coatings therein such as thermoplastic coatings, adhesive coatings, or combinations thereof to aid in the security of a bag member with the folding carton strips to produce a bag-like container on the container. .
Advantageously, a container including the container member and bag member in either a bag-like mount on the container or as a bag-like mount within the container may be able to achieve higher product packaging volumes than conventional packaging of the same size. This can allow the use of fewer platforms, fewer trucks and less energy consumption in the shipment of the product.
Advantageously, a container that includes the container member and bag member in either the bag-like mount on the container or as a bag-like mount within the container may be capable of achieving moisture ingress protection as low as about 1 gms per year at approximately 2 gms per year.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof taken in conjunction with the

Bag type inside the container and bag on the container, the glue can be applied as a total coating, or in a pattern where desired. Heat sealing of bag member 14 in container member 12 can be performed at about 93.33 ° C to about 232.2 ° F, preferably from about 121.1 ° C to about 218.3 ° C, more preferably from about 148.8 ° C to about 204.4 ° C. Heat sealing can be performed for about 0.1 sec to about 2 sec, or preferably from about 0.3 sec to about 1 sec, more preferably from about 0.5 sec to about 0.75 sec. Heat sealing can be performed in one stage or a plurality of stages, preferably in one stage. Heat sealing can be accomplished by heat generation by well known techniques such as conduction, induction, ultrasonic vibration, and combinations thereof. Preferably, heat sealing is performed by conduction such as by the use of heated rollers. Where heated rolls are used, the pressure applied during heat sealing can range from about 5 PSI to about 1000 PSI, preferably from about 50 PSI to about 700 PSI, more preferably from about 150 PSI to about 500 PSI.

preferably mechanical knives such as knife blades 58 and 60, can be used to cut the bag-forming materials provided by rollers 44 and 46 to form the bag member 14. Thereafter, the folding carton 52 is expanded and filled with product 62 that can be fed through supply means such as hopper 64.
During the manufacture of a bag-like container assembly within the container, as shown schematically in Figure 11, a bag member 14 is placed on the mandrel 90. The bag member 14 preferably includes a resealable closure 16. The mandrel 90 it is configured to be able to conform to the Interior of container member 12. Bag member 14 may, such as at bottom edges 40, 42 thereof, include an adhesive. Alternatively, as well as in addition to the glue present in bag member 14, the interior of container member 12 may be coated with a bonding material such as a thermoplastic, glue, or combinations thereof.
In manufacturing, pressure can be applied to container member 12 while mounted on the mandrel. The amount of pressure can vary depending on the material used in the container member 12, as well as the temperature of the mandrel 90 on the bag member 14. The pressure and application time are sufficient, however, it causes the container member 12 to adapt intimately with the shape of the mandrel 90 and the member of

Alternatively, a bag-like assembly within the container can be made by the first security bag member 14 which preferably includes closure means therein, such as a seal-type closure, on the inner surface of a folding carton and then applying the Rubber to the side seams of the folding carton to retain the bag member 14 within the container member 12 at a desired location within the container member 14. The opposite sides of the folding carton can then be folded and locked together. Container member 12 may optionally lack top flaps to allow bag member 14 to extend beyond container member 12. In any embodiment where container member 12 includes top flaps or lacks top flaps, bag member 14 can be folded back into container member 12. Where the container member 12 includes top flaps, those flaps can be closed to conceal the bag member 14 within the container member.
The bag-like mounts on the container of the invention are capable of achieving high levels of protection against the impregnation of gases such as water vapor in the product present in the bag member 14 within the container member 12. To illustrate, an assembly of bag on the container was made by adhering to a resealable bag member

Container 12 is box-shaped having a rectangular cross section and a heat-sealed hermetic bottom.
As an illustration of the protection provided against impregnation of gases, a bag mount on the container is pressurized with a PSI air pressure. The air flow is controlled by a precision regulator and an in-line flow meter to deliver through a needle. An adhesive foam is used to reduce possible leakage around the needle. The bag in the bag mount on the container inflated under supplied air pressure to record an internal PSI pressure. The flow meter, outlined at 0-30 liters / hour, drops to approximately zero, confirming that an airtight seal is reached. This decrease in flow shows a protection index not achievable by known packaging.
