The present invention relates generally to wireless telecommunications, especially to systems and methods of transmitting graphics in push-to-talk systems over wireless networks.
Technological advances have made mobile phones or wireless communication devices cheap and affordable for almost everyone. As radiotelephones are manufactured with greater processing power and storage, they become more versatile and incorporate many features, including direct wireless communication between two or more individual handsets. This direct wireless communication feature allows users with one handset to communicate with a predetermined set of group members without dialing the destination phone number, either Push-to-Talk (PTT) or "Push-to-Talk (PTT)". Commonly known as the "walkie-talkie" feature.
In PTT systems, the handset uses one single frequency for both uplink and downlink communication with remote servers. On the other hand, in normal wireless communication, a wireless telephone uses two frequencies to communicate with a server, one for uplink communication and the other for downlink communication. The PTT system requires the person speaking to press a button during a conversation and release it when the conversation is over. And any listener in the group can press their button to respond. In this way, the system can determine in which direction the signal should travel. When a user calls a receiving party or a group of receiving parties using the PTT system, the user's handset first makes a request to a remote server. When the remote server verifies that no other party is using this communication channel and this channel is available, it assigns this channel to the user. The user's message is received by the server. The server then replicates this message for each and all of the receiving parties. After this message has been sent to all receiving parties, the channel is released and ready for use by other parties.
The PTT system relies on cellular technology to connect to the recipient device. Conversely, if the radios are within a certain distance from each other, only regular "walkie-talkie" style two-way radios will work. Systems using the PTT function may generally be large urban areas or national, but can communicate anywhere within the service area specified by the service provider.
In general, PTT function communication applies a half-duplex channel with limited bandwidth. And PTT communication concentrates on the audio phase without other data functions due to bandwidth limitation. Therefore, members of the PTT communication group cannot easily express emotions that cannot be expressed verbally, but by using, for example, "emotions", understanding among members can be significantly improved.
The systems and methods according to the invention allow the transmission and display of graphic images between wireless devices in a push-to-talk system. A predetermined set of graphic images is stored in the wireless device. Then, when the user presses a push-to-talk button on the wireless device, the wireless device displays a predetermined list of images to the user for selection. After the user selects an image, the wireless device sends the image code associated with the selected image to a server that relays to all wireless devices in the push-to-talk communication group. When the receiving wireless device receives this image code, it searches for an image corresponding to this image code from a predetermined set and displays this image to the user of the wireless device.
In one embodiment, this method is for transmitting graphic image information in a push-to-talk system over a wireless communication network. This method presents a predetermined set of graphic images to the user of the wireless device, receives instructions for the selected graphic image on the wireless device, and directs the selected graphic image on the wireless device. Each step includes selecting an image code corresponding to the above and sending this image code to a remote server via a push-to-talk communication channel. This predetermined set resides on the wireless device. In addition, each graphic image in the predetermined set is identified by an image code.
In another embodiment, this method is for displaying graphic image information in a push-to-talk communication system. This method involves receiving a push-to-talk request instruction on a wireless device, receiving an image code on the wireless device, and selecting a graphic image corresponding to this image code from a predetermined set of graphic images. And each step consisting of displaying this graphic image to the user of the wireless device. This method receives the first image set code from a remote server, compares the first image set code with the second image set code, and the first image set code is the second image. If different from the set code, it also includes an additional step consisting of sending a request for a new graphic image to a remote server.
In yet another embodiment, this method is for displaying graphic image information in a push-to-talk system. This method receives a push-to-talk session request at the server, receives an image code corresponding to a graphic image at the server via a push-to-talk communication channel, and intends the push-to-talk session. Determining a group of received radio telecommunications devices, sending push-to-talk session instructions to each of the intended received radio telecommunications devices in the group, and intended receiving radio within the group. Each step comprises sending an image code to each of the telecommunications devices via a push-to-talk communication channel. The method further includes the additional steps of receiving the graphic image from the remote user device, storing the graphic image in the image database, and assigning a new image set identification code to the image database.
In one embodiment, the device allows the transmission of graphic images during a push-to-talk session. This device is a transceiver that sends and receives push-to-talk communication with a remote server, a storage device that receives a predetermined set of graphic images from the remote server, and a display unit that displays a predetermined set of graphic images to the user. The user interface unit that receives the instruction of the selected graphic image from the user, the push-to-talk interface that receives the push-to-talk request from the user, and the image code corresponding to the instruction are selected, and this image code and the push-to-talk request are selected. Includes a controller that sends A predetermined set of graphic images is associated with the image set code.
The server communicates with the wireless communication network. Then, the plurality of wireless communication devices can communicate with the server via the wireless communication network. Here, the first wireless communication device transmits an image code to the server by push-to-talk communication. The server transmits this image code to the second wireless communication device by push-to-talk communication. The second wireless communication device also receives this image code by push-to-talk communication and displays the image identified by this image code. Each wireless communication device has a predetermined set of graphic images, and each graphic image in this predetermined set is identified by an image code. The server contains information about at least one push-to-talk communication group with multiple members.
Therefore, the system and method are advantageous because they give a group of wireless communication devices the ability to communicate by graphic images. The availability of a predetermined set of graphic images provides a variety of tones for the user to choose from. In addition, transmitting shorter graphic image codes can save expensive bandwidth.
Other advantages and features of the invention will become apparent after a brief description of the drawings described below, a detailed description of the invention, and a review of the claims.
In this description, the terms "communication device", "wireless device", "wireless communication device", "wireless handset", "handheld device", and "handset" are used interchangeably. Also, "fetch" and "download" are used interchangeably. As used herein, the term "application" is intended to include executable and non-executable software files, raw data, integrated data, patches, and other code segments. Further, the same code number refers to the same element from several viewpoints, and each element is not limited to the singular but includes a plurality of elements unless otherwise specified.
In summary, the system and method of transmitting and displaying graphic information in a push-to-talk system allows a user to send a graphic image along with an audio message to a member of a communication group. Alternatively, the user can send a graphic image instead of an audio message. The graphic image is pre-installed in each handset of the communication group, and each graphic image is associated with a predetermined image code. The user selects a graphic image when activating the PTT function, and the image code associated with the selected graphic image is sent to the members of the communication group. When the member's wireless handset receives the image code, the wireless handset selects the associated image and displays this image to the receiving member. Therefore, by using this system and method, it is possible to transmit graphic information without significantly increasing the traffic of the wireless communication network.
FIG. 1 shows a communication network 100 used in accordance with the present invention. The communication network 100 includes one or more communication towers 106, each connected to a base station (BS) 110 and servicing a user with a communication device 102. The communication device 102 can be a cellular phone, a pager, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, or any other handheld, fixed, or portable communication device that supports push-to-talk (PTT) communication. Commands and data inputs by each user are transmitted as digital data to the communication tower 106. Communication between the user using the communication device 102 and the communication tower 106 is, for example, code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), global mobile communication system ( It can be based on different technologies such as GSM), or other protocols that can be used in wireless or data communication networks. Data from each user is transmitted from the communication tower 106 to the base station (BS) 110 and transferred to the mobile exchange (MSC) 114. The Mobile Exchange (MSC) 114 may be connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) 118 and the Internet 120. The MSC 114 may be connected to a server 116 that supports the PTT function in the communication network 100. Server 116 contains an application that supports the PTT function, in addition to storing a table that lists the members of each communication group. Optionally, server 116 may be part of MSC 114.
FIG. 2 illustrates block diagram 200 of the wireless handset 102.
The wireless handset 102 includes a controller 202, a storage device 204, a display unit 206, an external interface unit 208, a user interface unit 212, a push-to-talk activation unit 210, a transceiver 214, and an antenna 216. The controller 202 can be hardware, software, or a combination thereof. The storage device 204 stores a predetermined set of graphic images, which includes photographs of members of each group, pictures representing human emotions, graphics with data information, and the like. Alternatively, a predetermined set of graphic images may be stored on the remote server 116. The display unit 206 may display a graphic image or other digital information to the user. The external interface unit 208 controls hardware such as speakers, microphones, and display units used to communicate with the user. The user interface unit 212 controls hardware such as the keypad and the push-to-talk activation unit 210. The transceiver 214 transmits and receives radio signals to and from the communication tower 106. The controller 202 interprets the commands and data received from the user and the communication network 100.
Generally, graphic images are defined and provided by service providers. The graphic image may contain standard emotion icons or "emotions". Alternatively, the graphic image may be defined and / or generated by a member of the communication group and self-identifying. The graphic image can be uploaded to server 116 by the user using a computing device that accesses server 116 via the internet 120. The graphic image is also uploaded from the wireless handset 102 to the server 116 if the wireless handset 102 is equipped with a camera or other graphic generator. Each graphic image tone is assigned a graphic image code and is associated with the image set code. Each alert tone set is identified by an alert tone set code. The graphic image on the wireless device must be updated and synchronized with other wireless devices in the communication group.
FIG. 3 is a block diagram 250 showing the interaction between the server and the user device during the PTT communication process. Communication between the initiating user device 251 and server 253 does not occur until the user activates the PTT button and selects the alert tone to be sent with the audio message. After the user selects the image, the starting user device 251 sends a PTT communication channel request to the server 253. Upon receiving the PTT communication channel request, the server 253 checks whether the PTT communication channel is available and, if the PTT communication channel is available, allows the PTT communication channel to the initiating user device 251. After the start user device 251 is authorized to use the PTT communication channel, the start user device 251 receives the user audio and searches for the image code associated with the selected image. Both user audio and image code are sent to server 253. Upon receiving the user audio and image code, the server 253 identifies members 255-259 of the PTT communication group to which the starting user device 251 wants to send an audio message. Server 253 also replicates the audio message and image code and sends them to each member 255-259 of the PTT communication group. When the user audio and alert tone code are received by each member 255-259 of the PTT communication group, each member device searches for and receives the image identified by the image code in addition to playing the user audio. Display the image to the members.
FIG. 4 illustrates a wireless communication device 270 displaying an emotion icon 276 on a display screen 274. The user starts push-to-talk communication by pressing the push-to-talk button 272. Then, push-to-talk communication is sent to the remote server. When the receiving device 270 receives the image code from the remote server during push-to-talk communication, it searches for the graphic image 276 related to the image code and displays it on the display screen 274.
FIG. 5 is a flowchart for the graphic image update process 300. When the wireless handset 102 is powered, the wireless handset 102 checks in step 302 for a new set of graphic images for the communication group to which it belongs. The wireless handset 102 compares its image set code with the image set code received from the server 116. If there is a new image set, the wireless handset 102 sends a download request to server 116 in step 304. Then, in step 306, the wireless handset 102 receives a new image from the server 116.<u style="single">Alternatively, the wireless handset 102 sends a new graphic image download request to the server 116 if the image set code is different from the image set code received from the server 116 as a result of the comparison.</u>Server 116 can minimize bandwidth usage by sending only new images to the wireless handset 102 instead of sending the entire set of images.
FIG. 6 is a flowchart for the graphic image transmission process 400. When the user wants to communicate with other members of his communication group, the user activates the PTT activation unit 210. The wireless handset 102 interprets the PTT activation unit 210 and displays a predetermined set of graphic images to the user in step 402. The user can select the image to be sent with his audio message. Alternatively, the user selects an image and sends only this selected image to the members. After the user makes a selection, the wireless handset stores this selection in step 404 and requests a PTT connection in step 406. This PTT connection request is sent to server 116. The wireless handset 102 then waits for the PTT communication channel. If the PTT communication channel is available, the wireless handset 102 sends this selected image to the server 116 along with the audio communication in step 410. If the PTT communication channel is not available, it will time out in step 412. The user then has to wait and then retry.
FIG. 7 is a flowchart for the graphic image display process 500. In step 502, when the wireless handset 102 receives PTT communication with a graphics code, in step 504, the handset 102 compares this graphics code with a predetermined graphics database. Handset 102 checks in step 506 whether the received graphic code is listed in the database. If the received graphic code exists in the database, the wireless handset 102 displays the corresponding graphic image on the display unit 206 in step 508. If the received graphic code does not exist in the database, the wireless handset 102 will display either a default graphic image or an error message in step 510.
FIG. 8 is a flowchart for the image set generation process 600 on the server 116. In step 602, the server 116 receives a new graphic image from the user in the remote handset 102 and stores this graphic image in the database. Every graphic image in the database is associated with an image code, and the database lists all the image codes of the images stored in the database. Alternatively, this new image may come from a user on a computing device connected to server 116 via the Internet 120 or other communication channel. After storing this new graphic image, the server 116 creates a new image set identification code associated with the new image set in step 606.
The following is a description of one use scenario according to one embodiment of the present invention. If the user wants to communicate with the receiving party by means of the PTT function, the user presses the PTT activation unit 210 on his wireless handset 102. The controller 202 determines the pressing of the PTT activation unit 210 and displays to the user a menu with a predetermined set of graphics. The user can select a predetermined picture or graphic image to be sent by PTT communication to the receiving member. The controller 202 receives and stores a predetermined graphic user selection. Then, the transceiver 214 and the antenna 216 send a PTT request to the remote server 116. When the PTT request is forwarded to the remote server 116, the PTT request travels as radio waves from the wireless handset 102 to the communication tower 106. The link between the wireless handset 102 and the communication tower 106 is via a semi-dual communication channel. This can be either an audio channel or a data channel. PTT communication may be directed via a dedicated radio network. Alternatively, PTT communication may be guided by a wireless communication network that supports normal wireless communication.
After receiving the PTT request from the subscribed wireless handset, the server 116 determines if the communication channel is available. If a communication channel is available, server 116 grants the channel to the requesting wireless handset. After allowing the communication channel, the requesting wireless handset 102 searches for the code associated with the user-selected graphic image and sends it to the server 116 along with the audio communication. Bandwidth usage is minimized by sending the code associated with the graphic image rather than the actual graphic image. When the user updates the graphic image set in the wireless handset 102, the graphic image is transmitted only once to each handset.
The server 116 receives this audio communication with the graphic code and identifies a member in the PTT communication group. Server 116 replicates the audio communication and graphic code and sends one copy of this audio communication and graphic code to each member in the PTT communication group. The user may belong to more than one PTT communication group and may be able to send PTT communication to any group to which the user belongs. PTT requests and PTT communications include a group ID code that identifies the targeted PTT communications group.
The following is another use scenario of the present invention. Users belong to a PTT communication group that includes their family and close friends. And the PTT communications group has pre-defined graphic images that include icons representing human emotions, such as happy faces, moody faces, and raging faces. Users lined up to buy movie tickets for their family, but learned that they were sold out. This user can use PTT to convey this fact to his family. And instead of expressing disappointment in words, his sister can send a moody face icon via PTT communication.
Considering the methods that can be performed on the computer device or wireless communication device of the wireless service provider, this method can be performed by a program residing in a computer-readable medium. There, the program instructs the server, or any other computer device with a computer platform, to perform the steps of this method. This computer-readable medium can reside in server memory, or in a connectable database. Further, the computer-readable medium may also be present in an auxiliary storage medium that can be loaded onto a magnetic disk or tape, optical disc, hard disk, flash memory, or other storage medium as known in the art.
In connection with FIGS. 5-8, this method can be realized by manipulating a portion of a wireless network, such as a wireless communication device or server, to execute a sequence of computer-readable instructions. These instructions can reside within various types of media consisting of signal bearings or data storage primary, secondary, or tertiary. The medium may include, for example, RAM (not shown) accessible or present in the components of the wireless network. Even if contained in RAM, diskettes, or other auxiliary storage media, this instruction can be, for example, DASD storage (eg, a traditional "hard drive" or RAID array), magnetic tape, electronic read-only memory (eg,) , ROM, EPROM, or EEPROM), flash memory cards, optical storage devices (eg, CD-ROM, WORM, DVD, digital optical tape), paper "punch" cards, or other suitable including digital and analog transmission media. It can be stored on various computer readable data storage media such as data storage media.
While the present invention has been specifically described with respect to preferred embodiments thereof, various changes in form and detail can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as described in the claims. It will be understood by those skilled in the art. In addition, the elements of the invention may be described or claimed in the singular, but multiples are considered unless the limitation on the singular is explicitly stated.
