Chromogenic coating composition
Abstract
A process is provided for producing a pressure-sensitive carbonless record sheet comprising the steps of preparing a hot melt coating composition, the hot melt coating composition being water insoluble and having a melting point of from about 60 DEG C to about 140 DEG C. The hot melt coating composition includes a chromogenic material. The chromogenic material is a meltable color developer of the acidic electron accepting type. The hot melt coating composition is heated to a temperature above its melting point and the heated coating composition is applied to a substrate, the coating composition being applied at a coat weight of from about 0.2 pounds to about 8.0 pounds per 3300 square feet of substrate. The coating composition is set by cooling the coated substrate. A novel liquid chromogenic coating composition is produced, the coating composition having a melting point of from about 60 DEG C to about 140 DEG C and comprising from about 15% to about 100% of a chromogenic material and from about 0% to about 80% of a rheology modifying material, the chromogenic material being a meltable color developer of the acid electron accepting type. A pressure-sensitive record sheet is produced, the record sheet comprising a substrate having a plurality of surfaces, at least one of the surfaces being coated with a set hot melt coating composition, the set hot melt suspending medium including a chromogenic material dispersed therein.

A drawback of rivesti¬ta paper products, such as those without coal c quelliautonomi, derives from the need to apply unacomposizione liquid coating containing gliingredienti color forming during the manufacture processodi. Nel11 appiica2ione of these rive¬stimenti will sometimes use volatile solvents chea turn require the evaporation of excess

A coating metodoalternativo involves 1'applicazio¬ne of the color-forming ingredients in an aqueous polti¬glia, requiring always del¬l'eccesso the removal of water by drying. Entrambii processes present serious drawbacks, inparticular the coating method with solventicomporta necessarily the production of vaporidi generally volatile solvent that create a po¬ticelo both for the health of that nell'am¬biente surrounding fire. Also, when it takes action unsistema aqueous solvent, 1'acqua be e-vaporata, which involves the expenditure of quantitati¬vi. significant energy, the esigenzadi also a drying step requires' complex and expensive for use diapparecchiature essiccarecontini! cariente a substrate which has been rive¬stito with a compound of aqueous coating. Unproblema separate but honed involves the smaltimen¬to polluted water resulting from prepara¬zione and from the cleaning of aqueous compositions rive¬stimento, j, 'application of heat not sol¬tanto is expensive, making the complessivadi factory operation ?. product ion less effective from 6 the cost point of view, but it is also potenzialmentedannosa for ingare DIAI you color-forming the qualisono generally coated on the substrate cartadurante manufacture, the problems encountered nel¬lo actual coating step are attributable generalmen¬te the need of a es¬siccamento stage by 'heat that follows 1'operazionedi coating.
Many of the procedimentoo specific advantages of the product of the present invention derivanodal fact that it uses a composition of rive¬stimento hot-melt adhesive to coat the paper substra¬to * This contrasts with the 'rivestimentiutilizzati of the prior art which generally have a ri¬chiesto aqueous coating or insolvent. For the purposes of the present application of brevet¬to, the expression "coating 100JS of sostanzasolida" salacious sometimes used to describe the coating o¬perazione and must be understood ariferirsi to the fact that it uses a hot-melt coating and composizionedi of conseguenzaè it has been eliminated the drying step normal¬mente present in the manufacture of paper and nelrivestimento, Λ this regard it should be noted that you already know ~ 1 ~ 7 for the coating of aqueous systems points esistemi ir solvent 'See for example the United States brevettodegli No, 3,914,511, "the patent degliStati United nf3,016 * 308, the patent states .Uriti n '3,079 ^ 351' patent of Staiti Unitin.3.672.935 and United States patent number 3 * 684 <549. Dinners: you can easily understand how pre¬cedo "the continuous production of a product will require multiple car¬te contemporary finish, 1 * simultaneous drying, the contemporary press, and the collection and contemporary unapluralità finishing of paper substrates . Thus the patent CA- δ nadese η »945» 443 indicates that to do this deveesservi a minimum wetting of the water cartamediante sheet I1 during application of a rive¬stimento emulsion. For this purpose it strives unaemulsione high solid substance content, and special es¬siccatori are described in the aforementioned Canadian bre¬vetto. However, because of complessi¬tà the drying step, this procedi¬mento has not been possible until now by puntodi commercial view. More particularly, sta¬dio the drying involving 1'evaporazione delsolvente and, or the evaporation of water it does not allow the heat nonchél'ingresso fabbricazioneRimai tanca or continuous forine plural. In addition allostadio drying that prevents the produzionedi plural forms continues, the need for appli¬care heat for evaporation of the solvent co¬stituisce a serious drawback, that the Ciato; ' aqueous coatings and other coatings liquidirichiedono the use of special types of paper ge¬neralmente expensive, and even these; / porta¬no often to bending, distortion or deformation dellacarta, Ciato that water and other liquids tend apenetrare through the the paper substrate, inol¬tre the aqueous coatings and some tw Hh with solvent-borne coatings are not generally suitable all1ap-fold "ion for points or all '
They are generally only suitable all'applicazio¬ne to the entire surface of a sheet to a continuous coating produr¬re *
Another problem that has arisen commonly neitentativi to manufacture continuously pluri¬me forms has been the fact that the manufacturer of the paper cartadeve design from the point of view of mechanical re¬sistenza and durability in an appropriate manner secure against use in a variety of macchinedi c finishing printing. This requires that the fab¬bricante paper evaluates the apparatus rive¬stimento of forms from him supplied manufacturers, so that the paper can be? mododo designed to adapt all'apparecchiatura'e procedimentoche manifest the most stringent conditions. For que¬sto done, you must use a more eleva¬to ratio of long wood fibers and wood fibers corteda part of how ne¬cessario papermaker for the majority of machines eli re-garment, printing or finishing , OneLevel to obtain high mechanical strength suitable nelprodotto of finished paper. This makes more expensive the ΐ 10 * product in the final sheet, since the lungaè fiber generally more expensive than the short fiber "Esser .- * zialmcuite the separation of cartadal manufacturer of forms} manufacturer which is common today, that the esi¬ge manufacturer of paper with projects unmargine overflow its final product Peruna varieties machines gods, rather than I planned? © appo¬sitamente the paper product for notedelle conditions machines.
Combining the manufacturing operations, stam¬pa and finishing in a single ir 'line system, sirealizzano numerous advantages * First, the .puòessere paper obtained employing ground wood, ottenen¬do a lower ratio between fiber, long and fibracorta than is been made above, a Questorappresenta, 'improvement in costs and quality poten¬zialmente also in the product of cartafinale, tm second advantage that can be ricava¬to combination of dahlia, manufacture, dellastampa and finishing is that the recycled rifiutoo cards, sometimes hairy here "of", puòessere endeavored scrap in the manufacture of gloved paper quality of the paper is not a livelloelevato with margin * in excess.
