Articles for the surgical repair or replacement of living tissue
Abstract
1,217,601. Sutures and tissue replacements. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 1 Jan., 1968 [9 Jan., 1967], No. 142/68. Addition to 1,043,518. Heading A5R. [Also in Divisions D1K, D1R and D1W] Sutures, sheets or tubes for surgical repair or replacement of living tissue comprise non-absorbable filaments e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, cotton, silk, linen, stainless steel, tantalum, silver, gold or platinum, associated with polyglycolic acid (polyhydroxyacetic acid ester) which is absorbable in living tissue. Filaments of non-absorsable material are coated with polyglycolic acid or combined with filaments of polyglycolic acid to form bicomponent strands. Such strands or filaments may be woven or knitted to form a fabric or tube. The strands or filaments may be so arranged that the fabric contains increasing proportions of polyglycolic acid as the edges are approached in the directions of both warp and woof. A woven or braided tube may have polyglycolic acid in strands at each end. A heart value may have a fabric composed of non-absorbable and polyglycolic acid filaments secured around its periphery for suture purposes. A base fabric of non-absorbable material with or without absorbable material may be coated with polyglycolic acid.
