Hand-held laser scanning head for reading bar code symbols

Abstract

A narrow-bodied, single-and twin-windowed, hand-held, laser scanning head for reading bar code symbols includes at least one window mounted at the rear region of the head, and through which either the incident beam going to the symbol and/or the reflected beam returning from the symbol, passes unobstructedly and exteriorly of, and past, the front and intermediate body regions of the head. A field- replaceable laser tube arrangement, a laser tube and method of making the same, an arrangement for and method of controlling a scanning system, optical passive elements for increasing the depth of field, a trigger protective device, and a one-piece support bench and method of fabricating the same by mass-production techniques are also disclosed.

    CLAIMS:1. In a scanning system for reading bar code symbols, a scanning head comprising: a) a housing having an elongated body portion including a front region, a rear region, and an intermediate body region extending between the front and rear regions, and having side walls spaced transversely apart ofeach other by a predetermined width;b) light source means mounted within the housing, for generating an incident light beam;c) optic means mounted within the housing, for directing the incident beam along a light path towards a reference plane located exteriorly of the housing in the vicinity of the front region thereof, and towards a bar code symbol located in the vicinity of the reference plane to thereby generate a reflected light beam which is directed along a light paty away from the reference plane and back towards the housing;d) scanning means mounted within the housing at the rear region thereof, for sweeping at least one of said beams over a field of view across the bar code symbol;e) sensor means mounted within the housing, for detecting the light intensity in the reflected beam over a field of view across the bar code symbol,land for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light intensity;and f) signal processing means mounted within the housing, for processing the electrical signal to generate therefrom data descriptive of the bar code symbol, the improvement being characterised by: window means mounted on the housing, and having a light-transmissive window at the rear region in close adjacent confronting relationship with the scanning means thereat, said window being configured and positioned in the light path of said at least one swept beam to permit the latter to pass through the window and unobstructedly travel exteriorly of and past the front and intermediate body regions of the housing, whereby the field of view of the swept beam is substantially independent of the predetermined width of the housing due to its exterior transmission outside of the front and intermediate body regions of the housing.

    In a scanning system for reading bar code symbols, a hand-held scanning head comprising:a) a housing including an elongated body portion having a front end, a front region adjacent the front end, and a rear region located rearwardly of the front region, said body portion having outer walls fully circumferentially enclosing an interior that extends from the rear region to the front end, said outer walls including one interior-enclosing outer wall extending rearwardly from the front end;b) generally forwardly-facing light-transmissive window means on the housing, including a window located between the front end and the rear region and projecting outwardly from said one outer wall;c) means including a light source mounted in the interior of the housing for generating an incident light beam, and for directing said incident beam along a path through the window and past the front end toward a reference plane located exteriorly of, and beyond, the front end, and to a bar code symbol located in the vicinity of the reference plane to thereby generate reflected light of variable intensity which travels away from the symbol back toward the housing;d) scanning means mounted in the interior of the housing behind the window, for scanning at least one of said incident beam and said reflected light, over a field of view across the bar code symbol in a scan extending exteriorly of, and along, said one outer wall of the housing between the front end and the window, said scanning means being so Icated and arranged that the field of view of the scan is unrestricted by the front region;e) sensor means mounted in the interior of the housing, for detecting the variable intensity of said reflected light over a field of view across the bar code symbol, and for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light intensity;and f) signal processing means mounted in the interior of the housing, for processing the electrical signal to generate data descriptive of the bar code symbol.

    In a scanning system for reading bar code symbols, a hand-held scanning head comprising:a) a housing including an elongated body portion having a front end, a front region adjacent the front end, and a rear region located rearwardly of the front region, said body portion having outer walls fully circumferentially enclosing an interior that extends from the rear region to the front end, said outer walls including one interior-enclosing outer wall extending rearwardly from the front end;b) generally forwardly-facing light-transmissive window means on the housing, including a window located behind the front end at a distance which is a major part of the length of the elongated body portion, said window projecting outwardly from said one outer wall;c) means including a light source mounted in the interior of the housing for generating an incident light beam, and for directing said incident beam along a path through the window and past the front end toward a reference plane located exteriorly of, and beyond, the front end, and to a bar code symbol located in the vicinity of the reference plane to thereby generate reflected light of variable intensity which travels away from the symbol back toward the housing;d) scanning means mounted in the interior of the housing behind the window, for scanning at least one of said incident beam and said reflected light, over a field of view across the bar code symbol in a scan extending exteriorly of, and along, said one outer wall of the housing between the front end and the window;e) sensor means mounted in the interior of the housing, for detecting the variable intensity of said reflected light over a field of view across the bar code symbol, and for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light intensity;and f) signal processing means mounted in the interior of the housing, for processing the electrical signal to generate data descriptive of the bar code symbol.

    In a retro-reflective scanning system for reading bar code symbols, a hand-held scanning head comprising:a) a housing including an elongated body portion having a front end, a front region adjacent the front end, and a rear region located rearwardly of the front region, said body portion having outer walls fully circumferentially enclosing an interior that extends from the rear region to the front end, said outer walls including one interior-enclosing outer top wall having a top wall portion extending rearwardly from the front end;b) generally forwardly-facing light-transmissive window means on the housing located between the front end and the rear region, said window means projecting upwardly from the top wall portion;c) means including a laser light source mounted in the interior of the housing, for generating an incident laser light beam, and for directing said incident laser beam along a light path through the window means and past the front end toward a reference plane located exteriorly of, and beyond, the front end, and to a bar code symbol located in the vicinity of the reference plane to thereby generate reflected light of variable intensity which travels away from the symbol back toward the housing;d) scanning means mounted in the interior of the housing behind the window means, for sweeping said incident laser beam over a field of view across the bar code symbol in a scan extending exteriorly of, and along, the top wall portion of the housing between the front end and the window means, said scanning means being so located and arranged that the field of view of the scan is unrestricted by the front region;e) sensor means mounted in the interior of the housing, for detecting the variable intensity of that portion of said reflected light that travels toward the housing along said light path of said incident laser beam over a field of view during the sweep across the bar code symbol, and for generating an electrical signal indicative of the detected light intensity;and f) signal processing means mounted in the interior of the housing, for processing the electrical signal to generate therefrom data descriptive of the bar code symbol.

    In a retro-reflective scanning system for reading bar code symbols, a light-weight, easy-to-manipulate, non-arm-and-wr1st fatiguing scanning head normally supportable entirely by a user throughout the reading of the symbols, comprising:a) a hand-held, gun-shaped housing including a handle portion for normally supporting the scanning head in non-contacting relationship with the symbols during reading thereof, and an elongated body portion having a front end, a rear end, a front region adjacent the front ent, and a rear region adjacent the rear end and located rearwardly of the front region, said body portion having outer walls fully circumferentially enclosing an interior that extends from the rear region to the front end, said interior-enclosing outer walls including a pair of side walls extending between the front end and the rear region and being spaced transversely apart of each other by an outer transverse width dimension at the front region, a bottom wall extending transversely between, and connected to, the side walls, and a top wall located above the bottom wall and having a top wall portion extending longitudinally rearwardly from the front end and extending transversely between, and connected to, the side walls;b) generally forwardly-facing light-transmissive window means located on the housing between the front end and the rear region, and being closer to the rear end than to the front end, said window means projecting upwardly from the top wall portion;c) means including a laser light source shockmounted in the interior of the housing for generating an incident laser light beam, and for directing said incident laser beam along a light path through the window means and past the front end toward a reference plane located exteriorly of, and beyond, the front end, and to a bar code symbol located in the vicinity of the reference plane to thereby generate reflected light of variable intensity which travels away from the symbol back toward the housing;d) scanning means including a reciprocally oscillatable scanning component mounted in the interior of the housing behind the window means, for sweeping said incident laser beam above the top wall portion and over a field of view across the bar code symbol in a scan extending exteriorly of, and along, the top wall portion of the housing between the front end and the window means, said scanning means being so located and arranged that the field of view of the scan is unrestricted by the front region;e) sensor means mounted in the interior of the housing, for detecting the variable intensity of that portion of said reflected light that travels toward the window means exteriorly of, and along, the top wall portion of the housing along said light path of said incident laser beam over a field of view during the sweep across the bar code symbol, and for generating an electrical analog signal indicative of the detected light intensity;f) signal processing means mounted in the interior of the housing, for processing the analog electrical signal to a digital electrical signal to generate therefrom data descriptive of the bar code symbol;g) power supply means operatively connected to, and supplying power for, the laser light source, said power supply means including a direct current power supply component mounted within the handle portion and powered by a low voltage direct current signal for supplying a high operating direct current voltage signal to the laser light source, and a non-bulky cable connecting the housing to the system, said non-bulky cable including a conductor for carrying the low voltage direct current signal to the power supply component for powering the same, and also including another conductor for conducting the digital signal to the system, said non-bulky cable being readily flexible to permit user manipulation of the head with multiple freedoms of movement from one symbol to the next;and h) manually-actuatable trigger means on the housing for initiating reading of the symbol each time the trigger means is manually actuated by the user.
