    2) the thus prepared foaming agent-containing solid body is foamed on a non-adherent substrate by heating said solid body to a temperature in excess to the evaporation temperature of the foaming agent and in excess of the softening temperature of the polymer , ,for a time sufficient to obtain a transparent foamed PMMA with closed cells having a diameter of about 5 mm, and a density of about 0.03 to 0.05 g/cm^. 2. A process according to claim 1 characterized in that the plasticizer b) is an n-butyl methacrylate monomer or ethylhexyl methacrylate monomer, and the quantity of this plasticizer amounts to 5 to 25 parts by weight, preferably to 10 to 15 parts by weight of a) 3. A process according to claim 1 or 2 , characterized in that the foaming agent c) is a fluorocarbon or dydrocarbon , preferably trichlorofluoromethane or trichlorotri fluoroethane .or, respectively, butane, pentane or hexane. 4. A process according to any of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the polymerization catalyst d) is a catalyst effecting polymerization of the mixture upon heating thereof, especially a peroxide catalyst, and that for polymerization the mixture is heated and is maintained at a pressure in excess of the evaporation pressure of the foaming agent at the polymerization temperature. -סו- /.'A 5. a process according to any of the claims 1 to3, charac-! j terized in that the polymerization catalyst is a photoinitiator causing photopolymerization of the mixture, particularly by ultraviolet light, and that for pplymerization the mixture is irradiated withradiation'׳'///:causing polymerization, wherein the polymerization temperature is maintained below the evaporation tewpsrsr. > ture of the foaming agent at the pressure;prevalent during polymerization. . .י 6.
