    ; Process for the production of a water-insoluble hydrophilic gel, wherein A) about 30 to 90% of a hydrophilic a) polymer of identical or different watersoluble mono-olefinic ; monomers, or b) copolymer of said watersoluble monomers with 1 to 70% of water-insoluble, :identical or different mono-olefinic monomers, is cross-linked with B) about 10 to about 70% of a terminal diolefinic hydrophobic macromer having a molecular weight from about 400 to about 8000.

    Process according׳ to Claim 1, characterised in that the cross-linking is carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent. 3.י :Process according to Claims 1 and 2, characterised in:that the cross-linking is carried out in the presence of a suitable catalyst or system capable of generating free radicals at a temperature from about 40°C to about 150°C.

    4. Process according to Claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the cross-linking is carried out in the presence of about 0.02% up to 1.0% (weight %) of a suitable catalyst capable of generating free radicals at a temperature from about 50°C to about 100 e C.

Process according to Claims 1 to 4, characterised in that as catalyst capable of generating free radicals such compounds as are capable of generating free peroxy or alkyl radicals are used. 6 - Process according to claims 1 to 5, characterised i n that,as catalyst capable of generating free radicals ,diisopropyl perdicarbonate, tert.-butyl peroctoate, benzoyl peroxide, decanoyl peroxide,lauroyl peroxide, succinic acid peroxide, methyl-ethyl-ketone peroxide, tert.-butyl-peroxy acetate and azoisobutyronitrile are used.

Process according to claims 1 to 10, characterised in that»as a watersoluble monomer, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters derived from the alcohol of the formula HO-C H 9 -(CH״-CH0-״) -R m Zm 2 2 n wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, m is 2 to 5 and n is 1 to 20, are used.

    13. Process according to claims 1 to 12, characterised i n that as a watersoluble monomer, amides or imides of acrylic or methacrylic acid, in which the N-substituent is hydroxy53 alkyl, oxaalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl, wherein alkyl has 2 to 4 carbon atoms,are used.

    14. Prdcess according to claims 1 to 13, characterised in that ,as a watersoluble monomer, acrylic or methacrylic acid, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2- or 3-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, or tert.-aminomethacrylimide,are used.

A water-insoluble hydrophilic gel comprising :A) about 30 to about 90% of a hydrophilic a) polymer of identical or different watersoluble mono-olefinic monomers, or b) copolymer of said watersoluble monomers with 1 to 70% of water-insoluble, identical or different mono-olefinic monomers, which polymer or copolymer is cross-linked with B) about 10 to about 70% of a terminal diolefinic hydrophobic macromer having a molecular weight from about 400 to about 8000.

A gel as claimed in Claim 26, wherein said watersoluble monomers of component A are a) acrylic or methacrylic acid, or water soluble esters, amides or imides thereof, or b) monoolefinic salts thereof or c) polymers of monoolefinic, monocyclic azacylic monomer. 2®. A gel as claimed in Claim 26, wherein said water— soluble monomers of component A are acrylic or methacrylic acid, hydroxyalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl esters thereof, in which alkyl has 2 to 4 carbon atoms. 25. A gel as claimed in Claim 26, wherein said watersoluble monomers of component A are acrylic or methacrylic acid esters derived from the alcohol of the formula H0 ־ C m H 2— O ~( CH 2־ C V°)״— E wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, m is 2 to 5 and n is 1 to 20.
