    CLAIMS:W 1. A system for land seismic exploration comprising at least one portable data acquisition unit, said unit further comprising: (a) a seismic sensor for converting seismic energy to electrical representations;(b) a data recorder means operatively connected to the seismic sensor for recording the electrical representation;and (c) a controller for controlling selectively the operation of the data acquisition unit responsively to signals generated remotely to said controller;said controller being operable to switch said data acquisition unit from a standby to an active operating state in response to the reception of a unique coded signal.

    A system for land seismic exploration comprising:(a) a seismic source means for generating seismic energy in an elastic body;and (b) a plurality of data acquisition units for detecting and recording the seismic energy emanating from the elastic body, each data acquisition unit including a seismic sensor responsive to seismic energy emanating from the elastic body to produce electrical representations thereof, a data recorder means operatively connected to the seismic sensor for recording the electrical representations, and a controller for controlling selectively the operation of the data acquisition unit responsively to signals generated remotely by said controller;said controller being operable to switch said data acquisition unit from a standby to an active operating state in response to the reception of a unique coded signal. 42918/3

    A system for land seismic exploration comprising:1 (a) a master control means for issuing identification and command signals;(b) a seismic source means responsive to command signals for generating seismic energy in an elastic body;(c) a plurality of data acquisition units selectively responsive to the Identification and command signals for detecting and recording the seismic energy emanating from the elastic body, each data acquisition unit including a seismic sensor responsive to seismic energy emanating from the elastic body to produce electrical representations thereof, a data recorder means operatively connected to the seismic sensor for recording the electrical representations, and a controller operatively responsive to the identification and command, signals for controlling operation of the data acquisition unit;said controller being operable to switch said data acquisition unit from a standby to an active operating state in response to the reception of a unique coded signal.

    A system for land seismic exploration according to any of Claims 1-3 wherein the recorder 18 a tape cartridge type recorder.

    A system for land seismic exploration according to any of Claims 13־ wherein the recorder is a cassette type recorder.

    A system for land seismic exploration according to any of Claims 13־ wherein the data acquisition unit further Includes an analog to digital signal converter operatively connected to the sensor to digitise the analog output of the sensor for input to the recorder. A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 6 wherein the data acquisition unit comprises a signal conditioning unit responsive to the sensor for selecting and normalizing a desired signal for the analog to digital signal converter.

    8. A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 6, further including a large scale integrated metal oxide semiconductor chip data processor responsive to the analog to digital output for performing selected seismic functions and for monitoring the analog to digital output.

A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 3 wherein the controller responsive to the master control means switches the data acquisition unit from a standby to active mode of operation to activate the recorder to record header information and .:he seismic data output of the data acquisition unit sensor.

    10. A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 3 wherein the control means of the data acquisition unit further includes a receiver for receiving transmitted radio frequency signals form the master control means.

A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 3 wherein the master control means further comprises a radio frequency transmitter and receiver, and a manual control means coupled to the radio frequency transmitter and receiver whereby coded signals may be selected at the manual control and transmitted to the data acquisition units.

A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 3 wherein the master control means further comprises a radio frequency transmitter and receiver, and a field computer coupled to said radio-frequency transmitter and receiver and programmed to transmit coded signals for controlling the operation of the data acquisition units.

A system for land seismic exploration according to Claim 12 wherein the field computer is connected to a magnetic tape playback transport and to a collation tape transport, and programmed to correlate and collate data from tapes of the data acquisition units recorders played back from the playback transport and to record the collated data on tapes in the collation tape transport.

A method of land seismic exploration comprising the steps of:(a) positioning in a portion of an exploration area a plurality of portable data acquisition units for detecting and recording seismic energy emanating at locations marked in accordance with a preplot of the exploration area;(b) activating the data acquisition units to a standby mode;(c) positioning a seismic source for the data acquisition units at a narked location along a source trajectory;(d) positioning a master control remote from the data acquisition units;(e) signaling from the master control to selectively switch data acquisition units from the standby to the active operating mode whereby a tape recorder of each selected data acquisitan unit is actuated for recording electrical representations of the seismic energy emaneiting at the locations;42918M' (f) activating the seismic source to generate seismic energy waves to generate seismic energy in the preplot area;(g) signaling the data acquisition units to switch the active units to an inactive mode of operation and to selectively switch other data acquisition units from the standby to the active operating mode and moving the seismic source to a new location;and (h) recovering the data acquisition units operating in the inactive mode to replace the data tapes therein for further use of the data acquisition units in the exploration area and to replay the data tapes for processing the seismic data in the master control and data collation unit to a desired format.
