20 claims: 2 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
A display subsystem for a virtual image generation system, the display subsystem comprising:an optical fiber;a drive assembly to which the optical fiber is mounted, the drive assembly configured to manipulate the optical fiber such that a distal end of the optical fiber is displaced about a fulcrum according to a scan pattern, and such that light emitted from the distal end of the optical fiber during the scan pattern diverges from a longitudinal axis coincident with the fulcrum toward a plurality of off-axis scanning positions to generate one or more image frames;and an optical modulation apparatus configured to converge the light emitted from the distal end of the optical fiber at each of the plurality of off-axis scanning positions toward the longitudinal axis, wherein the optical modulation apparatus comprises two orthogonal diffraction gratings in series, such that one of the diffraction gratings diffracts light along a first axis, and another one of the diffraction gratings diffracts light along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis.
  2. 16
A virtual image generation system for use by an end user, comprising:memory storing a three-dimensional scene;a control subsystem configured for rendering a plurality of synthetic image frames of the three-dimensional scene;and the display subsystem of claim 1, the display subsystem configured for sequentially displaying the plurality of image frames to the end user.
  3. 18
A display subsystem for a virtual image generation system for use by an end user, comprising:an optical fiber;a drive assembly to which the optical fiber is mounted, the drive assembly configured to manipulate the optical fiber such that a distal end of the optical 02963434\2-01 fiber is displaced about a fulcrum according to a scan pattern, and such that light emitted from the distal end of the optical fiber during the scan pattern diverges from a longitudinal axis coincident with the fulcrum;and an optical modulation apparatus configured to converge the light emitted 5 from the distal end of the optical fiber toward the longitudinal axis, wherein the optical modulation apparatus comprises two orthogonal diffraction gratings in series, such that one of the diffraction gratings diffracts light along a first axis, and another one of the diffraction gratings diffracts light along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis. 10
