  1. 1
A method for providing cardiac support to a heart, comprising:operating a blood pump positioned in the heart, the blood pump having a cannula and including a motor operating at a motor speed and drawing a variable motor current to provide a level of cardiac support to the heart;measuring, at a controller coupled to the blood pump, an aortic pressure;measuring, at the controller, the motor current;determining a pressure gradient across the cannula associated with the motor current;using a processor to calculate, from the aortic pressure and the pressure gradient across the cannula associated with the motor current, a cardiac parameter;recording, in a memory, the calculated cardiac parameter;determining, based on the calculated cardiac parameter, a heart function parameter;determining, based on the calculated cardiac parameter and the heart function parameter, a problem with a positioning of the blood pump;and displaying a warning.
  2. 6
The method of any one of claims 1-5, wherein the calculated cardiac parameter is a left ventricular pressure. 02918454\4-01
  3. 7
The method of any one of claims 1-6, wherein displaying the warning comprises displaying the warning on an interface touch screen, and wherein the method further comprises actuating the interface touch screen based on at least one of the calculated cardiac parameter and the heart function parameter.
  4. 8
The method of any one of claims 1-7, wherein a left ventricular pressure is displayed as a waveform in real time.
  5. 9
The method of any one of claims 1-8, wherein the blood pump is positioned in a left ventricle.
  6. 10
The method of any one of claims 1-9, wherein determining the pressure gradient across the cannula associated with the motor current comprises accessing a look-up table.
  7. 11
The method of any one of claims 1-10, the method further comprising:using the processor to calculate, from the aortic pressure and the pressure gradient across the cannula, a left ventricular pressure and a cardiac power output;determining, based on the calculated left ventricular pressure and the calculated cardiac power output, a recommended adjustment to the motor speed;and displaying the recommended adjustment to the motor speed on a display.
  8. 14
The method of any one of claims 11-13, the method further comprising:using the processor to compare the calculated left ventricular pressure to a previous left ventricular pressure;and using the processor to compare the calculated cardiac power output to a previous cardiac power output. 02918454\4-01
  9. 17
The method of any one of claims 1-16, wherein the calculated cardiac parameter includes at least one of a left ventricular end diastolic pressure, a pressure differential across the cannula of the blood pump, a blood pump flow rate, a native cardiac output, a total cardiac output, a native cardiac power output, or a total cardiac power output.
  10. 18
The method of any one of claims 1-16, wherein the heart function parameter includes one of a cardiac contractility value, a cardiac relaxation value, a fluid responsiveness value, a cardiac output measure, a left ventricular diastolic dysfunction measurement, or a left ventricular systolic and diastolic elastance.
