  1. 1
Claims:1. A sequencing system comprising: a detection apparatus including: an array of magnetically-responsive sensors, each of the magneticallyresponsive sensors including at least two ferromagnetic layers and a non-magnetic layer that separates the two ferromagnetic layers, each of the magnetically-responsive sensors forming at least one of a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor or a tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor;a substrate disposed over the array of magnetically-responsive sensors, the substrate comprising a plurality of nanowells, the nanowells being coated with a hydrophilic layer, wherein the surface of the substrate that is outside of the plurality of nanowells is coated with a hydrophobic layer, wherein the nanowells are arranged in an array having positions that correspond to the array of magnetically-responsive sensors;and a single polymerase respectively immobilized within each of the nanowells, wherein each of the magnetically-responsive sensors is to experience a change in electrical resistance when an incorporation event involving the single polymerase takes place in a corresponding one of the nanowells, wherein the magnetically-responsive sensor may experience the change in the electrical resistance as a magnetic particle attached to nucleotide is added to a complementary strand.
  2. 8
A method, comprising:attaching a template strand to a polymerase immobilized at a nanowell in a flow cell, the nanowell being one of a plurality of nanowells provided in a substrate disposed over an array of magnetically-responsive sensors, the nanowells being coated with a hydrophilic layer, wherein the surface of the substrate that is outside of the plurality of nanowells is coated with a hydrophobic layer, wherein the nanowells are arranged in an array having positions that correspond to the array of magnetically-responsive sensors;delivering labeled nucleotides to the nanowell at which the polymerase is immobilized, each labeled nucleotide including a magnetic particle having a respective magnetic property;and detecting, by a magnetically-responsive sensor located proximate to the nanowell, a change in electrical resistance caused by the magnetic property of the magnetic particle that is attached to one of the labeled nucleotides as the one of the labeled nucleotides is added to a complementary strand along the template strand.
